## What is DashVox?

DashVox is a voice-first AI engineering assistant for when your hands aren't on a keyboard.

Commute, walk, bike, run, or just step out for coffee — DashVox lets you orchestrate real engineering work by voice. Kick off coding sessions on your dev machine, triage bug reports, review repos, draft release notes, or catch up on what happened while you were offline. The work runs remotely; DashVox keeps you in the loop and hands you a clean spoken summary when each task lands.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

• Spin up AI coding sessions on any SSH-reachable machine by voice. Your preferred coding agent handles the actual work on the remote end.
• Keep the conversation going while sessions run in the background. Queue follow-ups, pivot to other topics, or just listen — DashVox surfaces each completion automatically when it's ready.
• Run multiple sessions in parallel. The app batches completions cleanly so several finishing at once doesn't overwhelm you.
• Ask general questions with built-in web search for current information.
• Drop into raw shell mode when you need an unwrapped terminal command.
• Every spoken reply is shaped for audio: plain prose, no emojis, no markdown noise, no JSON read aloud.

MEET YOU WHERE YOU ARE

• CarPlay: full chat and session experience on your vehicle's display — hands on the wheel, eyes on the road.
• Apple Watch: spoken updates and quick status checks from your wrist. Take a call, take a walk, take a run — your background agents keep working.
• iPhone + AirPods: voice input and audio-first output for errands, transit, the grocery line, or anywhere you'd rather listen than look.

BRING YOUR OWN INFRASTRUCTURE

• DashVox Cloud works out of the box. Prefer self-hosted? Point the app at your own backend and run the whole stack on your hardware.
• SSH directly to your dev box over Tailscale, VPN, or the public internet. Direct-client mode skips the backend entirely for the lowest possible latency.
• Bring your own agent: Claude Code, Claude Cowork, Codex, or any custom CLI. Agent profiles let you tune flags, session flags, and working directories per machine.
• Password or private-key SSH auth, stored in the iOS keychain.

WHY IT'S DIFFERENT

• Non-blocking by design. Start a task, get the session id back instantly, and keep talking. When the remote agent finishes — minutes or hours later — DashVox tells you.
• Burst-safe. Three sessions landing in five seconds? You get one clean summary, not three interruptions.
• Audio-first. No visual noise. No JSON. No markdown tables read letter-by-letter. Every response is written for ears.

PRIVACY AND CONTROL

• Self-hosted is a first-class mode, not an afterthought. Run your own backend, keep conversations and sessions on your hardware.
• SSH credentials stored in the iOS keychain, never synced to any cloud we control.
• No ads. No tracking. No training on your prompts.

WHO IT'S FOR

• Software engineers who spend time away from a keyboard
• Commuters, walkers, runners, cyclists, and anyone who'd rather listen to work happen than stare at a screen
• Founders and tech leads who want continuity between the office and everywhere else

### 5/5 — Beautiful, Seamless, Seggsy

*2026-06-30*

Bro, I can finally code on the go. When I’m driving to work I can just listen to music, have my agents working in the background and check in with my projects. If I’m at the park I can just use my Apple Watch . It’s easy to use and has saved me a lot of time.

## Frequently asked questions about DashVox

### Does DashVox have ads?

No, DashVox is ad-free. The app prioritizes user privacy and does not contain advertisements or tracking.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.13.1 — 2026-08-31

Fixed Create Local Archive Agent Chat tool to properly render the generated file in the chat.

### 1.13 — 2026-08-30

-Added tool call and diff rendering to session chat view
-Added session chat rendering to agent chat
-Added (beta) watch wrist raise gesture recording and wrist lower send hands-free feature
-Added a free trial default mode for first-time download
-Further UI enhancements and optimizations

### 1.11 — 2026-08-05

-Added a renderer for documents downloaded in chats.
-Added export/share view for non-rendered file types.
-Fixed a bug where copying text from chats with markdown formats only copied the final element.
-Improved setup wizard and onboarding hints for dashvox cloud.

### 1.10 — 2026-08-01

- Settings cleaned up and reorganized: clearer info buttons, updated descriptions, and better grouping so related settings live together.
- SMS settings moved higher up for cloud users.
- Links in chat are now tappable.
- Optimizations to session auto-refresh.
- Longer silence gap in driving mode, so a brief pause mid-sentence no longer cuts you off.
- CarPlay now loads your chats and messages on its own, without needing to open the phone app first.

### 1.9 — 2026-07-23

1. Auto-send now works in noisy environments
Hands-free driving mode wasn't sending messages in rooms with steady background noise (e.g. office AC). The old detector used a fixed mic-energy threshold that constant noise held open, so the "you stopped talking" timer never fired. Now it endpoints on transcript-growth stall so it sends when the recognizer stops producing new words, which ambient noise can't spoof.

2. Spoken notifications outside the app (Communication Notifications)
Enabled the Communication Notifications entitlement. When DashVox is closed or backgrounded and a reply notification arrives, iOS reads it aloud over CarPlay/AirPods, with Focus bypass and instant Watch delivery. (Requires the backend to send mutable-content:1 and enabling Settings → Notifications → DashVox → Announce Notifications.)

3. Terminal commands now work on backend-managed sessions
send_terminal_command was returning "[No direct SSH session on this device]" for backend-managed sessions whenever the app wasn't holding a live on-device SSH connection. It now forwards those commands to the backend as a raw shell command and returns the output.
