## What is Day and Night Journal?

Day & Night Journal is a calm, private space to reflect on your day — once in the
morning, once at night. It's built around a simple idea: journaling shouldn't be
one-size-fits-all, and your reflections should stay entirely yours.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
There's no company account and no server in the middle. Your entries live on your device
and sync only through your own private iCloud. We never see your data, because it never
reaches us. Nothing is uploaded to us, sold, mined, or used to train anything. Sign in
with Apple keeps your identity private.

MORNING AND NIGHT
A gentle two-part ritual: set your intentions, gratitude, and to-dos in the morning;
unwind and reflect on your meals, movement, mood, and thoughts at night.

MAKE IT YOURS
Every prompt is yours to shape. Add, rename, reorder, retype, or remove any field.
Choose from short text, long text, numbers, sliders, time pickers, single- and
multi-select choices, checklists, and a tap-to-count tracker (great for water).

FILLS ITSELF IN (OPTIONAL)
Connect Apple Health (read-only) and your sleep, steps, and exercise can fill themselves
in automatically — so you're never re-typing what your devices already know. Health
access is entirely optional and the app works fully without it.

SEE YOUR PATTERNS
The Insights tab surfaces your consistency and trends over time, and a Weekly Recap
celebrates your week and helps you keep the habit going.

DESIGNED FOR iPad AND iPhone
A spacious two-column layout on iPad, a focused single-column layout on iPhone, synced
through your private iCloud.

Reflect in the morning. Unwind at night. Keep it private. Make it yours.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.4 — 2026-08-14

A fix for iCloud sync, and a way out if it has already stopped

If you have ever used "Re-save oversized photos at a smaller size" in Troubleshooting,
this is the important update.

That button could stop iCloud sync on your device for good, with nothing left in the app
to press. It re-saved every oversized photo in one go, and iCloud refuses an upload that
large in a way it does not recover from on its own. It now works through them a few at a
time, waiting for each upload to finish, and tells you how many are still to come.

If your device is already stuck

Journal health now offers "Set aside the photos blocking upload". It lifts the photos
iCloud will not accept out of the way so the rest of your writing can get through, then
puts them back one at a time as uploads recover. The photos stay on your device — nothing
is deleted — but the days they belong to will look blank until they return.

You will now be told when sync stops

The app has always had a "Sync stopped — reopen app" warning, and because of a fault in
how it recognised the failure, it had never once appeared. It does now. If you see it,
closing the app completely and reopening it really is the fix. It can occasionally show
up when sync was only briefly interrupted; it clears itself as soon as anything uploads.

Nothing about your journal changes in this update, and there is nothing to set up.

### 1.3 — 2026-08-03

A timer you can run from the home screen

Any timer prompt now has a home screen widget with Start and Stop, plus Reset and the week's total on the larger size. It keeps counting without opening the app, and a run left going overnight is banked against the right day.

Your streak, a goal and a running timer on the Lock Screen

The streak, goal and timer widgets now come in Lock Screen sizes. They're read-only there — tap one and it opens the app.

A gentler first day

First run now asks how much journal you want: just the essentials, a balanced day, or the full picture. "A balanced day" is exactly the set the app has always started with, so nothing changes unless you choose otherwise — and you can add or retire prompts at any time in Edit my questions.

You can speak instead of typing

A one-time tip pointing out the microphone already on your keyboard.

The printable book works again

The PDF book was saving as a file nothing could open, and a photo-heavy journal could run out of memory part-way through. Both fixed. Opening the date range no longer crashes on a journal that contains an oddly dated day.

Photos are safer

On an account with more than one device, a photo still waiting to sync could be deleted instead of saved. That is fixed. "Delete everything" now clears waiting photos off the disk as well, instead of leaving them behind.

Easier to read, easier to tap

The app now holds its light palette in Dark Mode, so the sleep and reminder time pickers are legible again instead of near-white on near-white. The to-do widget's checkbox has a full-size tap target, so a near miss no longer yanks you out of the home screen. The first-run screens scroll, so nothing is silently cut off at large text sizes.

### 1.2 — 2026-08-01

iCloud syncing, properly fixed

Some journals stopped uploading to iCloud and stayed stuck until the app was reopened. The cause was photos: too many photo bytes in a single upload would be rejected, and that one rejection quietly stopped every upload after it.

• Photos now upload one at a time. Add as many as you like — each one appears in your journal straight away, and any still waiting show a quiet "Saving…" badge. Nothing is lost if you close the app part-way through.
• The sync status now tells the truth. If syncing has stopped, it says so and tells you to reopen the app, instead of showing a reassuring "last upload" time while nothing is actually going up.
• Restoring a backup no longer re-breaks syncing.

Export your journal as a printable PDF book

In Settings, choose "Export as a PDF book". Pick a date range or your whole journal and it builds a real book: a cover, then one spread per day, with Morning on the left page and Evening on the right. Choose exactly which fields print, or switch to photos only for a photo album.

History opens where you'd expect

• If you keep a photo of the day, History now opens straight to your photo history.
• "One field" is now called "Over time", and the field you were last looking at is remembered between visits.

Text size now works everywhere

Changing your device's text size updates the whole app straight away, instead of being ignored until the next launch.

Also in this update

• Settings → Journal health can check what iCloud actually holds and compare it against this device.
• Find and fix photos that are too large, or days pointing at a photo that is no longer on the device, in one tap.
• Time fields and the in-app counter buttons now record their changes like every other field.
