### 2/5 — Navigation to articles

*2026-07-04, version 222.1*

New version lost ability to read by article. On Saturday only get a digital version so I would easily select a puzzle and print it. Cannot find a way to do this now.

Not clear what was reason for such a major change (no documentation or notification).

### 2/5 — Sad decline

*2026-06-25, version 222.1*

The app and website are unusable: the newest version of the app opens with a loud, animated ad for a video game — what were they thinking? The ad can’t be skipped, so the app is now useless to me and I am a paid subscriber! Of course, the app forgets logins so maybe DDN thinks I don’t have a paid subscription? …and whose fault is that?

The website is incompatible with password managers, so I can’t access my paid subscription content there either.

It’s really sad, heartbreaking really, to see the steady slow decline of Dayton’s historic newspaper that now seems to have accelerated. So sad…

### 2/5 — New digital version

*2026-06-07, version 221.2*

Nearly unreadable now. It uses nearly half the screen to advertise the paper that I am ALREADY trying to read. I’ve called twice to complain and each time I’m told it’s being fixed soon but that never happens. I just deleted the app and downloaded again to see if it was a problem with my device. No such luck. Get it together DDN

### 4/5 — Horrible new version.

*2026-06-06, version 221.2*

The old version ads were annoying enough - this is crazy - ads take up full top of the iPad screen and can no longer pinch up to maximize the paper - what in the world!

### 3/5 — Printing doesn’t work

*2026-05-23, version 221.2*

Can’t print the crossword in the new app

### 2/5 — New Version - Terrible

*2026-05-22, version 221.2*

The new version of DDN (ePaper) available from the application is a big step back. You lose about a third of the screen at the top because of advertising and trying to maneuver through the paper is no longer available. You can only select topics and view through the website format, definitely not user friendly. Please bring back the older version that reads more like a paper version. It may be time to drop my subscription.

### 2/5 — App crashes

*2026-04-27, version 20*

For the past month as I read the paper online via my Apple phone, the paper freezes and then the app inadvertently shuts down. I have to then start over and locate my article. It can happen 3 to 4 times each day.

### 2/5 — Latest update too slow

*2025-08-31, version 20*

The last update has slowed the app considerably. Takes nearly a minute sometimes to load the edition once selected. Also when printing puzzles and things, the print menu is different and gives me less flexibility to choose portrait or landscape. Please restore the original printing function!!

### 2/5 — Latest update broke bookmarks

*2025-08-07, version 20*

UPDATE: It's August 2025, a year since I left a five star review congratulating DDN and JN for getting the apps functioning smoothly while simultaneously not fixing what isn't broken. It was wonderful while we had it, but they have recently changed the app, and not for the good. Since the latest update, all my previous bookmarked Articles have been moved to Pages instead of Articles in My Content, and they don't open, except as a blank white screen! In a likely related problem, the bookmark icon is now missing altogether on all current digital app Paper articles so I no longer can bookmark new articles either! Oddly, the bookmark icon does appear for whole pages while reading the Paper, and those bookmarks actually function, though that is of no use to me. Bookmark icons are still available when reading the Live News section, but those bookmarks do not function. I have written twice each to Journal News and Dayton Daily News about the issues, but they have not replied. I use bookmarks heavily, and without being able to bookmark articles anymore, or even access my entire library of previously bookmarked articles, it's made the apps frustrating to use. Might be a complete dealbreaker for me.

### 3/5 — App Constantly Crashes

*2025-07-27, version 20*

I have no problem supporting small local media and journalism, but I cannot read the paper on my phone without the app crashing multiple times.

### 1/5 — Click the “share” button at your own risk

*2023-11-21, version 17*

Instead of just copying the link and perhaps the headline, it provides a bunch of unnecessary information and provides a second link to subscribe to the paper. Simple = better

### 3/5 — Interface is problematic

*2023-10-16, version 15*

First, when using the “paper” interface and I inadvertently touch the screen it brings up a poor excuse for the page. I have a browser — if I want to read the paper in that manner I’d choose to. The team should allow the user to opt-out of this “feature”. Second, when a customer, who pays real money, chooses to select the “paper” mode every time he opens the app and leaves it in that mode when he exits the app, shouldn’t have to select it each time he opens the app. Remember the state. Third, I would like the local content to be front and center. I know how to subscribe to the NYT, I don’t need their content in the local paper. I know how to access AP news, I don’t need it in my local paper, especially when it’s placed haphazardly throughout. I realize we’re a small town but it’d be great to see all the non locally-sourced news at the back of the paper. The paper is The DAYTON Daily News. Show me news pertinent to the greater Dayton area.

Finally, don’t randomly log paying subscribers out of the app. This isn’t hard.

### 1/5 — No longer works

*2023-06-28, version 15*

Went to read the paper online this morning and the app will not allow the paper to be read. Fix this!

### 1/5 — Since update to version 14 app no longer functions

*2022-06-21, version 14*

It used to be a reliable app that I used daily to read our local newspaper. Not one aspect of the app functions anymore, and I have corresponded with DDN many times and uninstalled, reinstalled, jumped through hoops providing screen shots etc, everything they asked, and now, not only can I not read the newspaper, but all my settings, bookmarks, personalization is lost too. They don't seem very concerned either, suggesting that I should "just go online and read it at their website". I am a paid subscriber. What's more, the app used to work fine. It's been weeks since this began, and I am really bummed that I may have to cancel my subscription as the app was my only real option.

### 1/5 — Suddenly awful

*2022-06-11, version 14*

The DDN app used to work great. Now it’s terrible. Every time you scroll down through articles, it glitches and sends you back to the top. Not just once. Every time you scroll!
It’s probably related to the ridiculous amount of ads inserted between stories.
It gets so bad you won’t want to put up with it anymore.

### 1/5 — Update

*2021-08-03, version 11.0*

I hated when the update started to have advertisements showing covering the bottom of the paper. No need for that if I am paying for the paper!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Restore previous version

*2026-05-29, version 221.2*

This update is a big step backward. We lose 1/3 of the screen for controls and advertising. On this latest version the print function does not do anything when printing the puzzles. Makes this version useless to me. Forcing me to use my old iPad with an earlier version to read the paper

### 1/5 — Restore old version!

*2026-05-27, version 221.2*

There is nothing good about this new version. A third of the screen is wasted on useless material, as is the opening screen. We pay a lot for the ePaper subscription and shouldn’t have to navigate through all this nonsense.

### 1/5 — New Version - not good

*2026-05-26, version 221.2*

I thought the DDN app was as good as I’ve seen compared to other newspapers. Now they screwed it up. It locks up, you can not view the e-paper and if you go through their web site portal the paper layout/navigation experience is a major step backwards. Not sure how anyone on there e-commerce team can be proud of this release. I like staying current with my college town, but not with this tool. I’ll be canceling my subscription to the paper if it’s not fixed quickly

### 1/5 — Another nail in the coffin

*2026-05-26, version 221.2*

Latest version makes the epaper worthless. Not only is way too much screen real estate at the top wasted by ads that aren’t even targeted to the reader, the ability to navigate has gotten super twitchy.
Can’t share articles at all. Can’t highlight words to lookup.
The fact that the “ news” is already two days old makes it a waste.
The straight digital stories are still so poorly curated as to be worthless as well.
Considering that the NY Times has shown how to run a news site for decades, why the DDN keeps trying to reinvent the wheel is why they will shut down before the end of 2026.

### 1/5 — New Version

*2026-05-24, version 221.2*

Your new version sucks. The former version was so easy to navigate. If you think you’ve improved it, you are absolutely wrong. And why aren’t the obits listed under sections? You guys really got this one wrong!

### 1/5 — This is Horrible

*2026-05-23, version 221.2*

You have managed to take a perfectly good approach and make it totally unusable. I have even deleted the app and reloaded it and the epaper does not load at all, which is the only part I want.

### 1/5 — You ruined it!

*2026-05-22, version 221.2*

The new update stinks. It makes the paper unreadable now on the iPad. The space lost at the top is tragic and I pay for the paper - NOT for adds. Full screen articles have gone away and tap to read doesn’t open the article. Sorry to say my husband and I agree we will cancel the subscription.

### 1/5 — Thank you for fixing what was not broken

*2026-05-20, version 221.2*

Thank you for ruining this app. Now that you've "enhanced"to full-page height, which is how I've read this paper for years. And you're now WASTING 20% of what screen there is with ads. If I could have given you zero stars I would have. PUT IT BACKTHE WAY IT WAS.

### 1/5 — Turn a page, app shuts down

*2026-04-16, version 20*

Fix the bugs. I'm tired of having so sign in over and over, and now, you turn a couple pages and the app just completely closes out and sends you to your home page. Why bother with the paper if you don't get the access to read it?

### 1/5 — Huh?

*2024-10-01, version 19*

U have to log in or exit the app several times a week to use it.

It seems ridiculous that this news org cannot report a Buckeye football game until 2 days later.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Nice update to your app

*2025-07-22, version 20*

The new app is easy to read and navigate.

### 5/5 — Significant improvement

*2025-07-18, version 20*

The recently redesigned app is a very welcomed improvement.

Thank you for doing such a great job.

### 5/5 — Dayton Daily please don't change a thing! 😊

*2024-07-04*

Journal News and Dayton Daily are reliable newspapers with apps that function well. I think both content and quality are very good. The apps were bumpy going a few years back, but all has been working smoothly this past year, and I am grateful. Please, don't change a thing. I am so frustrated with a number of other apps that keep "improving" with updates that only succeed in cluttering the experience with advertising, bias, and fluff that ruin both content and experience. Keep up the good work!

### 5/5 — On-Line newspaper is best

*2021-04-19, version 10.0*

I did not think I would like an On-Line Newspaper but, because of its cheaper price, I subscribed to the DDN. Reading it for the last month I find it much more convenient, easier to read on my I-pad, and it is always with you assuming you carry a cell phone.

### 5/5 — Excellent paper

*2020-10-25, version 10.0*

It has all the elements and range that could be expected for a reader in the Greater Dayton area:

### 5/5 — Concise and Comprehensive

*2020-10-12, version 10.0*

I like the breadth of articles included in the news section and coverage of local sports. I also appreciate the coverage of key national stories.

### 5/5 — Great Newspaper

*2020-10-10, version 10.0*

Nice to have the news in a “paper” layout delivered everyday. DDN does a great job covering the area.

### 5/5 — Test

*2020-09-24, version 10.0*

Test

### 5/5 — DDN Website

*2019-11-07, version 4.5*

Paper is very professional. Great writers and great stories. Papers like this are usually found in larger cities where “journalists” tend to gather. Dayton is lucky to have such a paper in their hometown.

As a Native Daytonian, who now lives in Tennessee, I still subscribe to my hometown paper. Keep up the good work.

### 5/5 — DDN

*2019-08-29, version 4.5*

I was always a newsPAPER person, but now I thoroughly enjoy having my DDN digital version first thing in the morning.
