Not convinced on the security of this company, app is completely faulty on each step, god help in you’re logged in you will never be able to log out if if you delete the app and redownload to try again. It says completed steps, then your left unable to submit anything, while the company reminds you to submit your form. Terrible app, even worst website and tech support. If a company provides such a poor system, it raises questions on the quality of the security with your personal documents. ### 1/5 — Very poor *2025-11-18, version 2.2* Photo ID doesn’t work ### 1/5 — Useless *2025-11-15, version 2.2* I spent ages trying to get the app to work. I finally got all the way through only to have it tell me that the attempt had failed and I would have to submit my ID through the post. Everything said it was Ok but then the end result was a fail. The retry failed so now it’s a manual submission at extra cost because the App is useless. After spending nearly an hour completing the online forms and using this app to scan my ID, the verification process failed. I contacted customer support and requested a refund, but they refused to refund the full mount, keeping a £20 administration charge. I don’t understand what this charge covered, as my DBS application could not be completed and I did made all the effort. As a result, I have no DBS check and I’m £20 out of pocket. Twice now it’s failed & it’s so infuriating. I don’t know why they can’t just take your info via email. Really regret going with this company, they also charge you a fee for their service. Why Step by Step decided to use them, I do not know. It will only let you scan the QR code once (which is found online once you’ve registered - this is not made clear to you) and doesn’t accept your face scan once you’ve scanned your passport, meaning you have to send your documents off via special post. An absolute waste of time. ## Most praised reviews (6 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Works just fine *2025-05-18, version 2* Went through the process on the DDC website which will provide you with an on screen QR code once you have submitted your info. At that point you can use the app, which worked very well for me. ### 5/5 — Does the job *2024-01-22, version 1.2* Honestly this app is fine and does the ID process as intended ### 4/5 — Completed with helpful customer service *2024-08-05, version 1.6* I started the process on my laptop and only used my iPhone when I got to the point of scanning the QR code. I had no issues with scanning the QR code or the information page. However, I really struggled to locate/scan the chip in my passport cover. After several attempts I rang the help desk. The lines were busy but I was able to leave a message and they called me back. Once I understood better what I needed to do, I had no problem at all. The chip scanned, I was able to scan my face with no problems and my form has now been submitted. Granted, with slightly better instructions on the website/app the process could have been quicker (hence 4 stars), but it was easy once I had my phone in the correct position. Give it a go, but if you get stuck don’t wait as long as I did to contact the help desk! ### 4/5 — QR code issue *2024-06-05, version 1.6* I see a lot of people are struggling with this issue and so was I. I contacted the help team and they were quick to reply. I wasn’t seeing a QR code because I was completing the application on my phone. As soon as I opened it up on my laptop the QR code was visible. It should appear just after you see the tips on using the app. Hope this helps. ### 3/5 — Strange UX *2023-12-18, version 1.2* Took a picture of my passport, scanned my document.
