## What is dead air?

dead air teaches you morse code. it goes about it the way the old typing
tutors did. you drill, the drills get harder as you get better, and there is a
game wrapped around them so you come back tomorrow.

the method is koch, which is how morse has actually been taught since the
1930s. you start at full speed with two characters. once those stick you get
two more. no charts, no counting dots, no memorizing a tree. twenty lessons,
forty characters including numbers and punctuation, then a last run where all
of them turn up at once.

there are two skills in morse and the game grades them apart. sending is one.
you tap out characters on a straight key, short for a dot and long for a dash,
and the timing has to come from you. copying is the other, and it is the one
that takes longer. nothing is written on screen for it. you hear a character
and answer on the keypad.

the game around the drills: a radio station in sector 55 is being overrun, and
you clear the people coming for it by keying or copying whatever they carry.
six kinds turn up. one of them speeds up when you get it wrong, one takes two
correct answers, one blacks out the characters near it, and every third lesson
finishes with a boss that needs five clean answers to put down.

also in it:

- an endless practice mode on a rolling set of characters, for when you only
  want reps
- speed from 5 to 25 words per minute, and a pitch control for the tone
- 58 achievements, one for every lesson on each of the two tracks
- a field manual covering morse, the koch method, every enemy and how the
lessons work, so you are not reading a wiki in another window
- a key tester for finding your timing before anything is coming at you

the tone is generated as it plays rather than read off a sound file, so the
pitch control does what it says and the timing is what you set.

no account, no network, no ads, no telemetry. your progress is three files on
your own device.

### 5/5 — i love ham radio

*2026-09-02*

life grants many pleasures, and chiefly among them is sending morse code to faraway lands from a national park, right before dark. listening to the sweet song of a lark with the smell of tree bark. do you like sharks? don’t miss the mark.
