Oh my god. Thank you for making this. My safari was opening every single link in a new tab, which was incredibly annoying and there is no option to turn it off, so I was winding up with tons of tabs. This simply stops it from opening new tabs constantly. 

For anyone else using it, I had to reload pages and hit save on settings before it started working, but it did the trick.

Your advice about the loading issue will be helpful for my development. I have not been able to solve the problem yet, but I hope to do so in the future.
