## What is Decanted?

A private journal for the wine you drink.

Photograph the label. Decanted reads what it can - producer, name, vintage, region, grapes, alcohol - and fills the form in for you. Every field it suggests is marked, so you can see what came from the label and correct anything it got wrong before you save.

Then add what only you know: a rating out of ten, where you were drinking it, what you paid, and a note you will be glad to have in two years.

NO ACCOUNT, NO SERVER

There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to sign in to. Your bottles, photographs, notes and ratings are stored on your device and nowhere else. Nothing is uploaded, because there is nowhere for it to go.

You can give yourself a name and a photograph if you want them. The name travels only inside a file you choose to send. The photograph never leaves at all - it is not in a backup, not in anything you share, and not on a card you export.

Reading a label happens on your device too. The text recognition is Apple's, running locally, so the photograph never leaves your phone to be read.

If you allow location access, Decanted can fill in where you were drinking. The place name is looked up through Apple and only the name is saved - your coordinates are not stored, and you can leave location switched off entirely.

BUILT FOR A COLLECTION THAT GROWS

- Search by producer, name, region or grape
- Filter by style, country, vintage, rating or favourite
- Sort by what you tasted last, what you rated highest, or by vintage
- Card grid or compact list, whichever you prefer
- Similar bottles suggested from what you have already saved, so you can see what a new wine reminds you of

WHAT IT ADDS UP TO

Once there are enough bottles to say something, the journal starts answering questions you did not think to ask. Which countries and styles you actually drink, which grapes and vintages, where you were when you drank them, and how you tend to score.

Alongside the charts, your top wines - overall, and within each style and country - ranked from the ratings you gave. There is nobody else's score involved and none is asked for: these are your opinions, counted.

SEND A BOTTLE TO SOMEONE

Share wines with another Decanted reader as a file. What arrives is kept aside until they choose to add it, and their journal remembers who it came from. Nothing goes anywhere until you send it, and you choose how.

YOURS TO KEEP

Export the whole journal - entries and photographs - as a single ordinary zip file. The wines are readable JSON and the photographs are ordinary images, so you can open it anywhere, not only here. Import it back on another device, or keep it as the backup that a journal with no server behind it needs.

ALSO

- Free, with nothing to buy inside it
- No advertising and no tracking of any kind
- Works with no connection at all
- VoiceOver and Dynamic Type supported throughout
- Light and dark

Decanted is a record of wine you have already tasted. It is intended for adults of legal drinking age.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4.0 — 2026-10-04

Decanted now carries a wine catalogue, and consults it on every label you photograph.

A label rarely prints the house that made the wine where a camera can find it. A Crémant de Loire says LA GARDE and nothing else; the house, Marcel Martin, is not on the front at all. The catalogue — a hundred thousand wines and thirty thousand producers — fills that in, corrects the spelling to the one the trade uses, and brings the country with it.

It only ever answers who made the wine. What the camera read as the name stays exactly as it read it: a catalogue confident enough to rename your bottle is a catalogue that will one day rename it wrongly.

Also: the reader no longer mistakes a label's own vocabulary for a name — BRUT ROSÉ and TÊTE DE CUVÉE are things a wine is, not people — and ignores medals stuck to the glass, including the year printed on them.

The catalogue ships inside the app. Nothing is looked up over the network, and all of this works with no connection at all.

### 1.3.1 — 2026-09-30

Airport is now one of the kinds of place you can record. A bottle opened in transit belongs to neither the shop it came from nor the restaurant it did not.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-09-28

Your wines on a map.

A photograph carries where it was taken, so a label you pick from your library now places itself — a picture from Porto last summer says Porto, not wherever you happen to be today. The place is still yours to rewrite, and clearing it removes the pin.

Statistics has gained a world map of everywhere you have opened a bottle: a dot per place, coloured by what you mostly drank there and sized by how much. Open it from the corner of the map to pinch and zoom.

Where they came from now names nine countries before folding the rest into Other.

The coordinate is kept on your device and rounded to about a kilometre — enough for a city, not for an address. As ever, nothing leaves the phone.

### 1.2.1 — 2026-09-25

Reading a label no longer confuses the winery with the wine. The small print that says who bottled it now has the last word, and a grower already in your collection is recognised on sight — even if the camera misreads a letter.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-09-21

Label reading is much better at understanding what it sees: grapes split across two lines, places joined by a dash, and small misreads are now recognised. The built-in lists grew to over 400 wine regions and appellations, 200 grape varieties with their local names, and 90 countries. Sparkling wines are recognised from words like Brut or Crémant.

Country is now picked from a searchable list — or typed, if yours is not on it.

Photograph a bottle and the tasting date is filled in for you.

The undo message after deleting a wine now disappears sooner.
