## What is Deep Work & Focus?

Observatory is a calm focus and deep-work app. Start a session on one task, stay with it, and see real patterns in how you focus. Free to start.

When you drift or pause, that time isn't counted as focus. When you focus, it counts. And a quiet day is never treated as a failure.

FOCUS

Start a focus session on a single task and stay with it
A glowing orb that keeps you company while you work, with no pressure and no gamification
Drift detection: leave the app and a gentle reminder brings you back
Pauses and drifts are tracked, and never counted as focus
Six focus environments: Rainfall, Tide, Hearth, Nightfall, Drift and Forest
Ambient focus sounds to help you settle in
See your calendar alongside your day, and turn events into focus tasks

PROGRESS

Today's focus inside rings for your daily goal, active days and on-task rate
Clear charts of your focus time, with more detail on shorter ranges
A heatmap of when your sessions tend to start across the week
Records and a Grind Score, drawn from your own sessions
Your trajectory over time, so you can see how you're changing
Focus time per project and per task, including estimate versus actual

A COMPANION THAT LEARNS YOU

Discovers your patterns: when you focus best, your strongest days, how your sessions run deepest
Tells you what it notices in plain words, based on your own sessions
Suggests small experiments, and gives an honest read on whether they worked
A weekly review that brings your week together and shows what changed
A Story of your focus to look back on
When there isn't enough data to say something, it says so

MAKE IT YOURS

Focus themes, Home backdrops, orb colours and sounds
Light and dark mode
A daily focus goal and a weekly consistency goal

Every number and sentence in Observatory comes from your own sessions. It won't flatter you, and it won't shame you.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.0.5 — 2026-10-04

Living focus scenes
Your session screen is now a full-screen, gently moving scene with a big, clear timer at its centre. Four themes: Tide, Forest, Nightfall and Hearth. Rainfall and Drift have been retired; if you had one selected, your sessions use the plain theme until you pick a new one.

A calmer session
Warmer welcome-back lines, and a quiet note every ten minutes marking how far you've come. Drifts now count from 5 seconds away, the reminder arrives within 3 seconds, and locking your phone at your desk no longer counts as a drift.

A cleaner look
A floating tab bar, a black accent in light mode, a monochrome focus heatmap, and a new Start focusing button in the Home hero. A plain Home backdrop is now available to everyone.

Removed for now
The Learn section and the orb colour picker.

Fixes
Better contrast and readability throughout, VoiceOver improvements on the session screen, and many smaller fixes.

### 1.0.4 — 2026-09-29

A new app icon for Observatory, and small bug fixes

### 1.0.3 — 2026-09-28

A new welcome
A redesigned first launch, with a living landscape and just a few gentle questions.

Focus themes
Six environments for your sessions: Rainfall, Tide, Hearth, Nightfall, Drift and Forest. Each has its own landscape, birds in flight and matching colours, and your orb follows the theme you choose. Focus themes replace the background themes from the previous version.

A redesigned Home, Stats, Projects and You
Cleaner layouts, clearer numbers and one consistent look. Choose a backdrop for your Home screen.

A new weekly review
Your week in one place: your total, a day-by-day chart, and what changed from last week.

Clearer charts
Charts now show your actual focus time, with a readable scale and more detail on shorter ranges.

Stats for each task
Tap a task to see its focus time, sessions and how it compared to your estimate. Per-task tracking starts from this update.

Sessions that behave the way you'd expect

Tapping the drift reminder brings you straight back to your session.
If the app is closed during a session, the session ends at the moment you left, and your focus time is saved.
Sessions and tasks saved while offline sync when you're back online.

Fixes

Deleted tasks now stay deleted, from Home and Projects.
Sessions appear on the right day in your own time zone.
Fixed a crash when your calendar had an event with no title.
Saves no longer get stuck on a poor connection.
Better contrast in light and dark mode, and many smaller fixes.

### 1.0.2 — 2026-09-21

A calmer, more premium Observatory: new themes to personalise your space, a beautifully redesigned About You, a richer Story experience, and a range of refinements throughout.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-09-17

Smoother navigation with native transitions, a fresh app icon, and a range of fixes and refinements to make Observatory calmer and more reliable.
