Welcome to Detonation Racing, the most dangerous, least sensible racing series ever devised! I’m Dr Boom and it’s all my fault... Why are we here? So you can drive far too quickly and, ooh, I dunno, how about drop a nuclear-powered submarine onto the track to destroy the other racers? Just to claim victory for your own selfish ends? What kind of person are you? Anyway, someone seems to have written some kind of brochure for this thing, so I’m just going to read from that now. Ahem. “Experience edge-of-your-seat arcade racing in a world rigged to explode. A racing experience like no other!” Who writes this stuff? It’s still quite like other racing games to be honest, you drive a car, you go fast. There really are a lot of explosions though, so that bit is true. What else do they say here? “Tactically collapse and disintegrate the track to open new routes, and risk hazardous shortcuts to gain competitive advantage.” OK yes, you can definitely do that. Let’s be real, the whole thing is extremely hazardous. Driving a racing car round an exploding race track is a pretty hazardous thing to do. “Gameplay designed to be enjoyed in solo play, online, and locally with friends and family.” Yep, you can definitely play online against other monsters, there’s a great big career mode full of cool challenges that I personally designed, and you can play against your family and friends. As if you have any friends. “A pick-up-and-play, action-packed experience. Instantly accessible but with plenty of depth to master.” To be frank, they’re just repeating themselves here. It was never going to be “impossible to learn and incredibly shallow” was it? “Six incredible tracks, nine astonishing cars and mountains of paint jobs to unlock!” Is that a lot? They seem to think it’s a lot. I guess it is quite a lot. How many is a ‘mountain’ though? I reckon they’re trying to hide something. “Features crossplay between iOS, tvOS and Mac.” I don’t really know what that means, but it sounds pretty impressive, you have to admit. And that’s it. I reckon it sounds pretty good, but I would say that, I’m in it! But after I beat it, there wasn’t much to do anymore. Sure the daily doom was there, but that’s not much. Also, this game could have a REALLY good story put in it with little work. What’s the players backstory? Why the heck did the player come to race on a track with explosions EVERYWHERE?! All good questions. Sadly though, this game may have already been abandoned. No updates for two years. I’d love to see this game make a comeback. We need a real story and more to do after you beat the game. All said, this is a incredible mobile game and I hope to hear more from Electric Square. Is this the Split Second team?” I personally think that answer is obvious and glad to see them continue a legacy that was almost permanently ended due to corporate obsession over profit. Gamers loved Split Second and was looking forward to the next season that never happened. I applaud the effort of the developers for making this successor as much like Split Second as possible and also establish a refreshed identity of it’s own. What this game is missing in familiar Split Second features, is made up in the form of new features that would have made it’s predecessor even better and was likely coming in the canceled second season or sequel. Man, I am really enjoying this game been playing it with the Backbone and the controls are smooth. It’s clearly heavily inspired by an older Xbox 360 racing game called Split Second, which I always thought was super underrated. It takes the ideas from that game, and puts them in a more cartoony atmosphere. The vehicle handling may take some time to get used to, and I do wish there were more cars, but other than these minor criticisms, this game is awesome, and definitely highly recommended. ### 3/5 — Freezes frequently *2022-08-16, version 1.2.0* Freezes commonly making me have to quit and restart it. But no online MP? *2022-04-16, version 1.2.0* This is a fantastic game on my iPhone 12 Pro Max, with all the eye candy, explosions, and drifting goodness you could ever want in an over the top racer that never slows down and never takes itself too seriously. HOWEVER, what’s up with the online quick play MP feature that NEVER loads other players?
