But after I beat it, there wasn’t much to do anymore. Sure the daily doom was there, but that’s not much. Also, this game could have a REALLY good story put in it with little work. What’s the players backstory? Why the heck did the player come to race on a track with explosions EVERYWHERE?! All good questions. Sadly though, this game may have already been abandoned. No updates for two years. I’d love to see this game make a comeback. We need a real story and more to do after you beat the game. All said, this is a incredible mobile game and I hope to hear more from Electric Square. But no online MP? *2022-04-16, version 1.2.0* This is a fantastic game on my iPhone 12 Pro Max, with all the eye candy, explosions, and drifting goodness you could ever want in an over the top racer that never slows down and never takes itself too seriously. HOWEVER, what’s up with the online quick play MP feature that NEVER loads other players? I like the driving experience and game play. Only real issue is that it freezes often, forcing me to Force Quit and start the game again. This happens often. The good news is that is saves the game play, so I haven't lost any progress. When you play a race, the same opening sound effect plays. Not only that, but in a race, a very short loop plays in the background. It’s kind of repetitive. P.S. I just have a couple gripes… - why does the pack of other drivers burn off at the start of every race and your own car just putters along? I thought it was just part of getting the upgrades but it’s the same story now with full tens across the garage. -it’s frustrating when you beat a explosion and literally see your car driving away fine but the game still decides you wrecked. I did not wreck…I dodged the wreck. It’s usually when pushing through one of the closing obstacles. -I never see anyone to play in the online version. ### 4/5 — Good game, but a few problems. *2021-09-03, version 1.0.3* Let’s get the good out of the way, this is a great mobile version of the game Split Second (which has the same idea of “track has explosives, use said explosives to kill other racers”) I’ve seen, the tracks are nice and diverse, the characters (although feeling 1 dimensional) are great, and the cars look fantastic. Now the bad… 1. Yes, I said that the tracks are diverse, but only six? And no option to race them in reverse or have them be mirrored, or even both? That could’ve jumped the track list from 6 to 24 tracks. 2. When I’m restarting a race a few times, the frame rate slows down more and more. 3. Sometimes certain textures won’t show up. Recently I tried an arcade race, and the texture for the road didn’t render. The hit detection was there, just not the texture itself. Oh, and change how upgrading works. Overall, if y’all are looking for a decent mobile version of Spilt Second, this is it. Just be mindful of a few problems here and there. ### 4/5 — Better than expected…no one online? *2021-08-26, version 1.0.3* This game is a lot of fun. It took a few races to get used to the game and understand how to play, but once I got the hang of it i couldn’t put ir down. My only complaint is whenever I try to play online multiplayer I can’t. Pick up and play Lots of non-stop Fun *2021-08-24, version 1.0.3* Very similar to Split/Second which came out on X Box 360 and PS3 around 2011. The studio ended up getting shut down, but obvously the idea and people behind it live on. Very fun. Lots of non-stop fun. Easy to pick and learn. No need for a controller. You just need to use the Left and Right direcitonal buttons for turning and the Down directional button to start a drift. ### 5/5 — Most Exciting Mobile Racing Game!!! *2021-08-19, version 1.0.3* By far the most exciting racing game I’ve played in a very long time! I love that it’s out on Apple Arcade, because there are no in-app purchases that make you better by paying to unlock stuff! The more you play, the better you get, and the more you unlock! Overall this is a great and exciting racing game, and also very unique! I highly recommend this game, especially if you have a controller! I don’t write too many mobile game reviews, but I had to take the time out to spread the love! It clearly shows that the developers put their heart and soul into making this game! Great job guys!! I look forward to playing this game every day since I’ve downloaded it a few weeks ago!! ### 4/5 — Good Potential *2021-08-16, version 1.0.3* What could make this game better: There’s an option to wait around for other players to join a lobby where you can go one on one. As soon as I saw the game, played it I was super sure I was getting excited to play what I expected. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Love the game, but it keeps resetting my progress *2021-10-13, version 1.1.0* I’ve reported this bug several times now. I made it through all the episodes, tuned-up all my cars, and then the game lost the progress. (Now when I play it does not even allow me to tune up my cars, but I can still get the missing stars.) I have photos, but the developer seems un-interested in fixing this. That annoyances aside, they is one of the most fun racing games I’ve played in a long time. ### 2/5 — Repetitive, and slightly less than mediocre. *2021-12-30, version 1.2.0* Just finally completed the game and unfortunately 2 stars is all I can give it. Detonation Racing has some cool mechanics, the drift being one of them, and of course the detonation. The issue is the detonation mechanic ends up getting *so* repetitive, and once you see them happen a few times you can pretty much avoid all of them. The challenges in the missions are also not great… they’ll have you drift for 250m on maps where you have to sabotage yourself and drift against walls to hit the milestones. I guess this is done so you HAVE to replay missions In order to get all 3 stars, but it feels really not great. The game is also incredibly buggy. Slow motion glitches, losing control until you close the app, and being launched by nothing mid race happened to me quite a few times. For being free, it’s a fine toilet game. Once you beat it though I wouldn’t expect any replay value, it gets very tedious very quickly. ### 2/5 — Might be fun but the controls *2021-08-02, version 1.0.3* I don’t play too many racing games, but the drifting feels so off whether I’m using my PS4 controller, or the touchscreen. Car keeps drifting wayyy after I release the drift button, so much so that I kept getting turned around. Other than that, graphics are cool and it looks like there’s a lot of content in this game. Maybe I’ll try it again if controls can be updated, or more deeply customized. ### 2/5 — I really hate the dollar-store Joker character *2021-08-02, version 1.0.3* Seriously, Dr. Boom is cringey. I don’t want to see it every time I spin out…or any other time. Too much dialogue, not enough racing. The racing itself feels limited, not unlike Cruisin USA circa 1996. There’s very little true control over the car, which is odd in a game wherein I’m supposed to destroy my opponents. The game is very much a one-trick pony. Great graphics, bland execution. ### 2/5 — Slow, clunky and not very fun. *2021-08-02, version 1.0.3* The first thing I noticed were the subpar graphics. This looks like an early Xbox360 game from years and years ago. But like always, gameplay matters the most--unfortunately this game is not fun to play. The tutorial starts out really slow and doesn't explain what is going on from the getgo. It's difficult to steer, clunky and unresponsive and not great to look at while playing. Skip this one. ### 2/5 — Glitchy and unplayable *2021-07-31, version 1.0.3* I have the very latest iPhone 12, as upgraded as possible, and yet this game took so long to load that I thought my phone locked up. Tried to play one match and the amount of times my car shuttered or glitched made me quit. Not sure what the deal is here, but at this point I’ve got much better things to do. ### 3/5 — Freezes frequently *2022-08-16, version 1.2.0* Freezes commonly making me have to quit and restart it. And i was playing it on ipad, but its easier with a controller on mac. But the cloud saving does not work at all and i can play it on any other device with my progress. When those thing arent problems, its really fun. ### 3/5 — Definitely enjoying it- BUT *2022-01-03, version 1.2.0* I am really enjoying this game! So far I have only played through the "episodes" but I like the game play and the characters are neat. Dr. Boom reminds me of Joker. :) I do have a few issues though - I think the game could be better if the they created more tracks - certainly more tracks are needed. Also, the game crashes occasionally, which I have not experienced with any other Apple Arcade games... Here's to hoping there are some updates - and some new tracks added in the future! (If not, I still get quite a kick outta the game) ### 3/5 — Very good game, some big issues though *2021-12-20, version 1.2.0* I really like playing this game, it’s a cool idea and a good game in general, but in of my biggest issues with the game is the Bot racers, while playing the story it’s nearly impossible for me to get all three stars on some older and current races, due to me getting constantly blow up, rammed into a wall, or getting flung out of the map by some unknown reason, and it’s quite frustrating, really wish this stuff could get fixed but it most likely won’t ### 3/5 — Like split/second but… *2021-10-15, version 1.1.0* The drift physics can screw you over, the sense of speed isn’t quite there and there’s no damage modeling (the only way you can tell if you wrecked another car is the game tells you!) it’s ok for the price but it’s just not there yet. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Split Second Legacy Lives *2024-01-31* You seen the trailer and wondering, “Is this them. Is this the Split Second team?” I personally think that answer is obvious and glad to see them continue a legacy that was almost permanently ended due to corporate obsession over profit. Gamers loved Split Second and was looking forward to the next season that never happened. I applaud the effort of the developers for making this successor as much like Split Second as possible and also establish a refreshed identity of it’s own. What this game is missing in familiar Split Second features, is made up in the form of new features that would have made it’s predecessor even better and was likely coming in the canceled second season or sequel. It’s clearly heavily inspired by an older Xbox 360 racing game called Split Second, which I always thought was super underrated. It takes the ideas from that game, and puts them in a more cartoony atmosphere. The vehicle handling may take some time to get used to, and I do wish there were more cars, but other than these minor criticisms, this game is awesome, and definitely highly recommended. ### 5/5 — Reminds me of 2010.... In my opinion these are a few things that could make this better. 1. Obviously more tracks, episodes and cars. 2. You could extend gameplay even more if the tracks were regular, mirrored and reversed. 3. Multiplayer mode is not good. I’ve tried many times and I’ve only had one race. 4. I would also like to do more than two laps. Maybe not all the races but some of them at least. 5. A tournament mode would be cool. 5-10 races and you accumulate points based on where you finish, how much you drift and how many opponents you strike. ### 5/5 — Wow *2021-11-09, version 1.2.0* Now this is racing for non-racing gamers.
