This requires going back over the paper to enlarge them in order to read them. ### 4/5 — Detroit Free Press - I like it *2022-07-20, version 3.6.05* I know it may not have the depth that the old print version had, but it still provides insights and solid information as to what’s going on in the City and State of Michigan. I value it as part of my life. Just wish the Tigers were doing better. All my life I have enjoyed the feel of the paper in my hands, holding it up in front of my face and folding it, and hearing the ‘crinkle’ as I went through each page. Well, the digital Free Press actually upgraded the experience! I am glad that there is a Print Edition, because the organization and look of the Free Press provides a welcome, comfortable experience. However, the digital format provides some features that I never thought possible. One can jump directly to a section; page through at the touch of a button; zoom into a column so it’s large print; or even tap an article to read it as if it’s a stand alone. Not to mention tapping ‘links’ that lead to the next part or related information. Works out great when traveling. Simple to use. Seems your choices of article selection could balance a bit if you chose other sources occasionally. Editorial pages, well you are the FREEP so I expect a left of center lean. I continue to read the Detroit Free Press for news but also to gain insight. An example would be today’s edition with a sports story about a Mumford wrestler. Everything it needs to be and nothing it doesn’t. ### 5/5 — So nice *2021-09-09, version 3.3.14* I love this app. I can read my daily Free Press whenever I travel and I can catch up on past editions when I miss them or when there are delivery problems. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 2/5 — Detroit Free Press App/ E-Edition: CLUNKY! *2023-01-25, version 3.6.05* After you work through multiple logon issues and the idiotic “Recapcha” picture puzzles, you MAY be able to read the paper. Once you’re able to see the paper, it’s a nice read and easy to scroll through. A nice feature is the option to click on an article and have it open on your reading device separately. Fix the annoying logon and Recapcha issue and Gannett may have a keeper even though this app has likely resulted in the loss of many jobs. ### 2/5 — Broken Again *2021-06-18, version 3.3.10* The app hasn't worked since June 17. It takes forever to open, and then only shows editions up to Jun 16th. Gives error messages about server connections and the server not having a valid security certificate if I try to use the browser version instead of the app. My iPad is limited to iOS 9, so it tries to reload the older version if I try to delete and reload. No go. The new version does work on my iPhone X, but this is a "last resort" platform for reading the paper. It NEEDS the larger screen to be practical. ### 2/5 — New app isn’t as good as the old app *2021-06-02, version 3.3.13* The new app looks good but it’s functionality makes it harder than the old app. The old app used to have the page forward and backwards always visible, now you have to touch once to bring it up and again to switch the page. When printing off crossword puzzles the company now forces in a header and footer taking away much needed space from the puzzle itself. I switched back to the classic version hopefully they don’t take that away ### 3/5 — App is good til in stops connecting *2021-11-12, version 3.3.14* I am frustrated that every 3 months the app starts working on my iPad directing me to call free press customer service. They have no answer and have wasted hours of my time not fixing the problem. Mysteriously the app eventually will work once reloaded. Still needs to improve the small business section with more personal finance information. I can send a link to an article by email, but the link points to a blank document.’ Similar app for Sarasota Herald Tribune and WSJ works fine. However, when I come across an article I would like to share with my wife and family and I try to share it. The app sends a link that opens up to a blank page. I have to one the paper on the WEB (Google Chrome) in order to share it. And that portal seems to have it’s own foibles occasionally ### 4/5 — Detroit Free Press on line *2023-01-22, version 3.6.05* I have been “reading” the Freep on line for over a year. I would prefer a “print” edition but understand the changing dynamics of today and the necessity to charge much more for the paper , which I can’t afford. When it switched to a digital version I was concerned but gave it a try since it was so easy and practical, especially when traveling. I did not have to go without my FP. This most recent version is better than ever. Reading the digital version allows you to increase the font. I was hesitant to go online to read the newspaper for a long time. But as you have over priced the delivery subscription out of my fixed income range and limited the number of days you will home deliver I have been forced to accept the inevitable by reading my newspaper on line. Your App was very easy to learn and most of the controls are intuitive to manipulate. My hats off to your programmers. I enjoy the paper although I miss the tangible feel of folding and reading a real paper. I also cannot cut out articles or other things I find of interest. I do print articles from time to time to have something tangible from the paper. Keep up the good work.
