It’s much more annoying now. Can this be rectified? I now know that some of the upgrades are not sourced from the same area, I have purchased them all, so if I clear memory or website data they are deleted also, and have to be reloaded, science and medical, it’s not the end of the world but a bit annoying. ### 2/5 — A very useful app. *2024-10-01* Update: downrated to 2 stars, here is why. 1) no updates in several years 2) I have purchased all upgrade packs, but cannot access them. This is not due to purchasing app from a different account, as is mentioned in the 'help', as I have only ever had one Apple ID 3) Attempted to get help from the support site. I filled out the form, pressed submit, only to find the site that is used to accept the form no longer exists. It is not that is not working, DNS has no knowledge of that site name. I suspect the developers haven’t even looked at it since then. Go to Home, pick a random article, and see that HTML is not rendered properly. The text has JavaScript and random markup sprinkled throughout and no line breaks and no formatting of any kind. Test your apps before posting them to the AppStore. ### 2/5 — Great Dictionary — Horrible App *2021-04-20* It appears that this app has not been updated in years. I paid for this app years ago when it was still being updated, but on my 2020 iPad Pro, the app itself does not fit the aspect ratio of my screen. That means it’s blurry and doesn’t even expand to the full width of my screen. I get the app in the middle with two black bars on the sides. This is a great dictionary with a huge number of resources, but I expected the app to continue to be updated since I paid for it. If they had discontinued the app, I would understand — but they still sell it on the app store. That means people are buying an app that is already well outdated. I would love to see a refresh to this app similar to what they did for the iPhone app, especially if it is to stay on the app store for any considerable amount of time. It seems silly that the iPad app could be so ignored when there is a shiny new iPhone app. **Developer response:** Sorry to hear your experience has taken a downturn. We'll certainly share your comments with our app team, and let them know how much you'd like to see they updates to the iPad app. Thanks for being a long-time user of our app! ### 2/5 — Inferior to the iPhone version *2021-01-23, version 7.2.27* I wrote a review several years ago complaining that you could not see word origins (etymologies) on the iPad version of this app, and this still has not been fixed. I have purchased the upgrades for both versions, but I have to use the app my iPhone even when I’m working on my iPad in order to get a full definition that includes etymology. So basically, the iPad app is almost worthless to me. I don’t understand why they don’t fix this. It would probably take someone just a few minutes to fix the code to display the word origin. ### 4/5 — Love it, BUT no slide over or split screen view *2020-08-28, version 7.2.27* UPDATE: Still use it as a reference, but reluctantly switched to Merriam Webster app in order to have access to a dictionary in slide over mode while writing short stories. Disappointing this hasn’t been addressed over the years. ORIGINAL: First off, I love this app and have used it for years. I purchased the full complement of Pro add-ons and use it on my iPad and Android tablets. My only disappointment is that it won’t work on iPad in split screen or slide over view. As a writer using Scrivener, slide over would make my life so much easier. Any plans to implement this? It works fine in split view on Android with MS Word. ### 3/5 — Would be 5 star if multitasking compatible. *2020-08-12, version 7.2.27* It would be really useful if you provide the multitasking feature in iPad. ### 4/5 — One Thing Missing *2020-07-05, version 7.2.27* Perfect dictionary app, except that I would like to see the origins of words, like on the iPhone app - specifically, I enjoy reading the origins of every Word of the Day :) ### 3/5 — Would be 5 stars if notable flaws were fixed *2020-07-01* For a paid app, it is a disappointing experience. You cannot launch the app from its own notifications or the widget. When I get a daily word notification and press on it, the app tries to launch but crashes. Every time. The same happens if I tap on “Learn more” in the daily word widget. I have been using iPad Pro 2018 with the latest software. The app also suffers from formatting issues. You can’t see the widget very well if you turn on dark mode. Otherwise, once you do launch the dictionary it’s a nice app. ### 3/5 — Will not go to landscape view on iPad *2020-06-28* I like this app but we use it for our Scrabble dictionary , however we find it very frustrating that my keyboard on my iPad Pro goes one way and the dictionary goes the other. We are not able to change this dictionary to landscape view to coincide with our typing. Eventually we take the iPad out of its secure home so we can see our search words without standing on our heads. No longer any good *2024-12-10* This was a favorite app for a long time but it barely functions any longer. It used to be that once you started typing a few letters, suggestions would appear or if you misspelled a word, suggestions would be presented. Now you just get an error. Stay away unless they fix this. ### 1/5 — Upgrades do not work *2024-11-17, version 7.2.27* I purchased the power pack but I can not get access to these features. I submitted requests through the app and have not seen a response. I would like to use this app. It claims to have everything I need but the upgrades feel like a bait and switch. Deleted app. No thank you! ### 1/5 — No External Keyboard Support *2020-07-24, version 7.2.27* It is extremely frustrating that there have been no serious efforts to address those of us who use external keyboards. Seriously? But then again, I guess when an app’s “about” section shows a copyright two years out of date, one shouldn’t expect much from their developers. Overall I love the functionality of the app. As someone who writes on their iPad, the program is useful. As someone who uses an external keyboard, the lack of keyboard commands is inexcusable. Using the app slows me down and forces me to take my hands off my keyboard. And that’s a deal breaker. Meh. ### 1/5 — Not Optimized for iPad iOS 13 landscape *2020-05-28, version 7.2.27* If you work with an ipad and only use landscape because you have a keyboard attachment, this won’t work for you. It’s optimized only for portrait. Also, paid to remove ads for the other app for dictionary.com, which is optimized for landscape, but is useless really. No different then the online version, except it costs money. And you have to pay to see extras like synonyms. They have two many products that aren’t evenly produced. Don’t waste your money. ### 1/5 — Falling short... *2020-01-28* I would like to give this app a good review. I have it installed on my iPad mini & I use it a lot. I have the ad-free paid for version & have also acquired most, if not all, of the in-app purchases. However, I just got an iPod touch (64GB 5G) for greater portability & it is not available from my iCloud repository for installation onto my new device. It does appear to be to be available in the app-store but it looks like I would have to pay for everything a second time. Or download the free version & put up with the damned ads. NOT HAPPY! I would recommend that anyone considering this app take a look at WordWeb which is based on Princeton university's WordNet project. It is genuinely free & the app is maintained & kept up to date. **Developer response:** Thanks for taking the time to share these thoughts. We currently don't support saved history or favorited words across devices or apps, as we do not have user accounts. That said, we will be sure to take this as feedback and share with our app team for them to consider in future updates. This Dictionary solves that beautifully with its pronunciation feature. Great for words I don’t know and even better for pronunciation of words that aren’t used that often. ### 5/5 — A very useful app. *2019-12-07, version 7.2.27* Update: The word pronunciation is again working, and I have uprated to 5 stars. Note: I tried to submit this via your website and "contact us", but it is timing out. I have found this app useful for quite some time now, thank you. Just today I have noticed there is no sound when I press the speaker icon for a pronunciation. This is an up to date version of the dictionary on iOS 13, running on the smaller version of an iPad Pro. The audio is turned up, and verified to be working. I do see the speaker icon flash momentarily, but there is no audio. ### 5/5 — Missing the sounds. Just need restart the iPad *2019-12-07* I like to hear the pronunciation for every word. But I couldn’t get any sounds when I click horn sign on the screen. My I-pad is iPad 13.2.3. Please help me to figure it out. I will change the stars after I got the answer. Did you know that Graham Norton had been indefinitely suspended from the BBC because of terrible allegations? No, no he wasn’t. Shame on dictionary.com.
