## What is Digital Habits?

Take back your focus. Digital Habits: Blocker is a powerful, open-source focus tool that helps you block distracting apps and websites — on your terms. Built on more than 10 years of research into digital distraction at the University of Oxford, Digital Habits: Blocker is designed to reduce impulsive screen use without taking control away from you.

Create and customise blocklists, choose when and how long to block apps and websites, and hold yourself accountable with tailored override difficulties.

Key features:
• Block Websites: Instantly restrict distracting websites across browsers
• Block Apps: Temporarily restrict distracting apps while a block is active
• Allow mode: instead of blocking specific apps / websites, choose what you want to 'allow' and everything else gets restricted automatically
• Quick start: start simple blocking/allowing sessions in just a few clicks
• Custom Blocklists: Create multiple blocklists for different contexts — work, study, evenings, deep focus
• One-Off or Scheduled Blocks: Start a permanent or temporary block instantly, or choose when scheduled blocklists become active and how often they can repeat
• Visual Timeline: See your blocklists at a glance on a clear 24-hour timeline (larger screens only)
• Pause & Resume: Pause blocks when truly needed — and resume automatically
• Stack Blocks: Run multiple blocklists at once without conflicts
• Override Protection: Choose how difficult it should be to cancel a block early — from simple confirmation to maximum-difficulty challenges
• Always Active: Blocks continue running even if you close the app

Digital Habits: Blocker is fully open-source and collects zero user data.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 3.8.9 — 2026-08-12

Hi folks,

- Meet Digital Habits: Blocker! Renamed from ReDD Blocker as part of the move from the Reduce Digital Distraction (ReDD) Project to Centre for Digital Habits (digitalhabits.org).

This update also comes with some helpful improvements!
- "Create/edit dialog polish": Emoji and colour sit below Stop Method, with English (UK) "Colour" spelling and a tighter welcome header layout.
- "Quick Start difficulty changes (and keeps drafts)": Override difficulty tops out at 1000 characters (~5 minutes of typing), the control is labelled "Difficulty to override", and one-off drafts stay alive through the start confirmation instead of vanishing on re-render.
- "More realistic typing-time estimates": Random-words / custom challenges assume ~200 characters per minute and gibberish ~100, so the time hints match typical typing speed more closely.
- "Feedback options more clear": The feedback / suggestions link moved to the top of Settings so it's easier to find.
- "Enforcement section is clearer and open by default": The Enforcement section starts expanded, and the auto-close row now says it closes the browser if blocking is *bypassed* (not if "protection stops").
- "Neater backup controls": Export / Import stack to match the Settings control column.
- "Danish copy polish": Settings close is Gem, schedule wording uses *ugeskema*, and related Danish strings are tightened throughout.
- "One focus space expands by default": When you only have a single focus space, its sites/apps summary expands on first render so you can see what it covers without an extra click.

### 3.8.2 — 2026-07-26

Hi folks,

This update comes with some helpful improvements!
- "Allow edits between blocks": a new setting that applies per-schedule that allows frictionless pause and editing of most schedule settings when there are no active time segments and no enforced blocking. This is off-by-default and can only be toggled on before starting a schedule or if the schedule is paused/stopped. This is especially useful for people who have high-friction barriers to make necessary changes to e.g. the timings of their schedules because of changes to their workday.
- other design improvements and styling tweaks

### 3.8.0 — 2026-07-16

Hi folks,

This update comes with some design improvements and bug fixes!
- Restored functionality to exporting focus spaces and made it more reliable
- Improved the sizing and behaviour of the 'Lists' button for adding websites to a focus space
- Fixed a bug where adding websites and apps wouldn't work properly after starting a Quick Start focus space
- Other design improvements and styling tweaks

### 3.7.0 — 2026-07-16

Hi folks,

This update comes with some exciting new features and some major improvements!

Quick start focus spaces:
- For those that need to setup and start a focus space as quick as possible, you can now do so with the 'Quick Start' feature! Click the lightning bolt button, choose duration, add apps or websites to block or allow, and use a slider for override difficulty.
- Quick start focus spaces have clear temporary styling and appear at the top of your focus spaces. When they end, they will disappear.
- At any point before or during a quick start focus space, you can save it as a regular focus space without having to add any more details.

Other improvements:
- On smaller screens, there has been a complete redesign of the main page of the app. Now, focus spaces can span the entire height of the Home Screen, and you must click into a specific focus space to start, pause, resume, or stop it. 'Edit' has been moved into the menu (the ellipsis button).
- Focus space cards and confirm modals show clearer app/site counts
- Fixed several layout issues when using the app in landscape orientation
- Fixed issues with pausing focus spaces to make it work more reliably
- Fixed an issue where closing the app as a focus space was deleted would restore it on open

Please keep suggesting improvements to the app!

We hope you're enjoying ReDD Blocker!

### 3.6.0 — 2026-07-09

Hi folks,

This update comes with some exciting new features and some major improvements!

Allow mode focus spaces:
- A focus space can now allow instead of block: pick the apps and websites you want to use, and everything else (except essential apps) will be blocked while the focus space is active.
- You can switch between Block and Allow mode when adding or editing a focus space, with clear indications of what mode the focus space is in.
- Added allow-mode-specific wordings to the Shield screen when opening non-allowed apps.

Other improvements:
- Layout improvements to the onboarding screens on iOS
- Numeric-only input fields now bring up the number keypad instead of the full keyboard
- Bug fixes: non-repeating schedules are now enforced reliably across all backend paths; end time shown while a one-off focus space is running now accurately shows real end-time; on smaller screens, the emoji picker opens below the button so it doesn't overlap with the device's safe area.

Please keep suggesting improvements to the app!

We hope you're enjoying ReDD Blocker!
