## What is DitherCamApp ASCII?

The viewfinder doesn't show the scene. It already shows the result.

DitherCam is a camera app. It redraws the live feed frame by frame, cell by cell, with the algorithms of halftone printing and 1-bit graphics, and saves what you see as a photo or a video. No waiting, no progress bar, no export step: what you frame is what you get.

WHAT YOU GET
• 26 algorithms — halftone, ordered Bayer dithering, Floyd–Steinberg, Voronoi, hexagonal mosaic and more
• 37 cell shapes — circles, squares, crosses, ASCII characters, a page of code, your own text
• 19 colour palettes, plus the ones you build yourself
• 41 ready-made presets: one tap and the look is there
• 4 post effects — chromatic aberration, bloom, CRT, VHS
• Aura: coloured rings tracing the subject's outline

PHOTO AND VIDEO
Shoot up to 2160px, or record up to 60 seconds with the effect already baked in. You can also start from a photo or a clip already in your library — press and hold on the image to compare before and after.

SHARE THE SETTINGS, NOT THE PICTURES
A look you like becomes a short code — or a QR code — that carries numbers only: grid size, shape, colours, contrast. You send it however you like, the other person pastes it into their app and gets exactly your look. There is no feed, no profile, no server: nothing is published, and no image ever travels with the code.

WHAT THE APP DOES WITH YOUR DATA
Nothing leaves your iPhone. No account, no sign-up, no ads, no analytics, no third-party SDK, no tracking: there is nothing to collect, and nothing is collected. Every effect is computed on the device, and the whole app works in Airplane Mode.
• Camera: used only to draw the live viewfinder. Frames stay in memory and are never written anywhere unless you take a photo or start recording.
• Photo library: read only when you pick a photo or a clip to edit, written only when you save.
• Stats and achievements count what you have done on this iPhone, and those counters stay on this iPhone.
• iCloud sync is on by default and can be turned off in the menu. It carries your palettes, custom effects, favourites, theme and language between your own devices, inside your own private iCloud. Photos and videos are never uploaded.

No subscription and no in-app purchases: the app is complete as it is.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 2.1.0 — 2026-09-13

- Update video export with croping video before exporting
- bugfix

### 2.0.0 (8) — 2026-09-07

Capture improvements

• Saved photos match what the viewfinder shows, orientation included.
• Effects keep the same density and character in the photo as in the live preview, at every resolution.
• The same consistency when you save or share a photo from your library.

### 1.1.0 (7) — 2026-09-06

The main screen has changed

The camera fills the whole screen. Before, it was a box with rounded corners and margins around it; now the image reaches all four edges and the controls float on top of it.
The bottom bar has four controls instead of six: the Video/Photo switch, the shutter button, the button that opens the adjustments, and the library.
The Video/Photo switch has moved down, next to the button you then press. Before it was at the top. It's now icon-only, no labels.
Favorites and Colorfully are no longer buttons in the bar: they've moved into the adjustments panel (see below).
Top controls sit inside glass pills, so they stand apart from the image without covering it with a dark band.
Controls stay dark even with the phone in light theme: they sit over the viewfinder, not over the app's background.

Composition grid
New "Rule of thirds grid" toggle in the menu, Photo section: shows two lines each way over the viewfinder, to help decide where to place things in the frame.
Stays on between launches. It doesn't end up in the saved photo, and only appears live — on a photo you've already taken there would be nothing left to reframe.
The controls card opens and closes
There's a handle at the top of the card. Dragging it up and down moves the card between three heights: just the bar (to see the clean frame), bar + filters (the normal state), with the adjustments open.
A tap on the handle opens and closes the adjustments, same as the sliders button in the bar.
Only the handle drags, not the whole card: inside there's the scrolling carousel and the sliders, and on the image a vertical drag is already used to adjust the spacing between cells.
At rest the app stays with the filters visible, not with just the bar: switching filters is the thing you do most often, and it shouldn't cost an extra gesture. The compact view is where you go, not where the app leaves you.

The adjustments panel
One panel, split into three tabs: Effect (the sliders: cell, spacing, contrast, scale, intensity, Post FX), Color (Colorfully, background color, stroke color), Filters (algorithm, shape, favorites). Before it was a single row of twenty-one tiles to scroll through.
The tab decides what the strip below shows: on the Color tab, palettes appear in place of filters, the same way the Colorfully button used to.
Picking a palette turns Colorfully on by itself.
The panel, the filter strip and the bar are one single floating card, no longer three separate panels.

Filters
The selected filter is now shown by its colored background, no longer by an orange outline around it.
Switching filters resets the background color to default. Before, a filter with its own background would leave it on even for filters picked afterward.
NumDit no longer forces a blue background.
