## What is Dog?

Dog-Ear plays audiobooks and reads ebooks from your own library, and remembers where you left off.

Bring your own books. Dog-Ear doesn't sell anything: connect it to a server you run, a folder on the web, or a WebDAV share like Nextcloud or Synology, or send files straight to your iPhone or iPad over Wi-Fi. Just want a look? Tap Try the Sample Library for a shelf of public-domain classics.

LISTEN
• Lock-screen and Control Center controls, and AirPlay
• Chapters from your files, skip 10 or 30 seconds, and speeds from 0.8× to 2×
• Sleep timer, including "end of chapter"
• Download any book for offline listening

READ
• A clean reader with six themes, adjustable fonts, size, spacing and margins
• Tap or swipe to turn pages; two pages side by side on iPad in landscape
• Search inside the book, bookmarks, and a table of contents
• Works with standard EPUB files (DRM-protected books can't be opened)

ONE LIBRARY
• Ebook and audiobook editions of the same title appear as one book
• Shelves for what you're reading, recently added, series and finished books
• Search by title, author or series
• Your place syncs between your devices through your own iCloud account

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
No accounts, no ads, no tracking. Dog-Ear only talks to the libraries you add, and logins stay in your device's Keychain.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.6.13 — 2026-10-30

- Volume Boost: a speaker button beside the speed in Now Playing adds +6 or +12 dB for quiet recordings. Each book keeps its own level, synced across your devices.
- Each book's playback speed now syncs across your devices.
- Streamed books keep a steady volume (no pumping on loud passages).

### 1.6.12 — 2026-10-28

- Comics: a "Sorted by" menu under the title sorts series by Title, Recently Added, Recently Read, Year or Issue Count.
- Comics from the Files app: Import from Files (Settings > Wi-Fi Transfer) now accepts cbz comics, and Wi-Fi Transfer takes them too. They show up under Comics, one series per folder (loose issues are grouped by name). RAR comics (most.cbr files) can't be read yet; a.cbr that is really a zip works.
- Opening a book or comic that has to download now shows a progress bar with the size and time left.
- iPhone Duo: Dog-Ear follows the fold. Open like a book, ebooks and comics show two pages, one each side; the library grids, book page and mini player keep everything off the fold. Unfolded or on iPad, the player splits: controls on the left, chapters, where you last stopped and the sleep timer on the right. Tabletop (half folded): the page or player stays above the fold with big controls below, including AirPlay. Closed, it turns every way.
- Comics: the scanner's black border and bare paper around each page are trimmed so the art fills the screen (Settings > Comics > Trim Page Margins, on by default).
- iPad and the open iPhone Duo: the mini player adds back 10 and forward 10.
- A book's description shows on its page, under Resume on the open iPhone Duo.
- Comic reader: tapping the edge turns the page at once (no pause waiting for a double tap).
- Home: comic series tiles show the series name above the issue count.
- The sample library adds five public-domain comics.

### 1.6.7 — 2026-10-26

New since 1.0:
• Comics and graphic novels, with their own reader, shelves and offline downloads
• CarPlay, and an Apple Watch app that keeps audiobooks on your wrist
• Car Mode: a dark screen with big buttons for the road
• Choose and reorder the shelves on Home, including a new Genres section
• Want to Read, and series pages that show the whole series in order
• iPad keyboard shortcuts: Command-F to search, Command-1 to 5 to jump between sections
• Steadier volume at faster playback speeds
• Each book remembers its own playback speed
• Close Player: stop and put the player away from its ... menu, or long-press the mini player
