### 3/5 — Too simplified, unhelpful buttons, and not intuitive to navigate anymore

*2025-06-07*

The beta version has now become the default version and even though you can switch off Interactive mode (the conversation is presented one speech bubble at a time) and go into Reading Comprehension mode (the whole article is presented at once), there are some issues. The interface has a minimalist feel to it compared to before and while it looks sleek, it’s become more complicated to actually use and there’s a lot of friction points due to the design choices that were made at the cost of functionality (e.g., it’s very clunky if you want to restart the audio of the article from a specific spot). There seem to be more updates recently but it feels like changes are being made without thorough or thoughtful user testing. Sad because I used to use the app a lot more but now these changes and new friction points are causing me to get less out of the app and less excited about using the app. I will say though that I appreciate the team being fairly responsive and they seem like they do care about user feedback but they will probably not go back to the version of the app I loved.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your detailed feedback. The features and functionality you’re referring to are currently in beta and under active development. Your insights are incredibly valuable to us as we experiment with and refine these features. Please consider sending feedback directly through the app so we can address your specific concerns and improve the experience. If you’d prefer not to use beta features, you can always turn them off in the settings.

### 4/5 — Very helpful

*2025-05-26*

I started off with Duolinguo to practice Chinese every day, in addition to working with a tutor and textbook. After about a year I'd finished all the Chinese content it had. After looking at many apps I chose this one. I'm grateful to the team as they're very responsive if there's a problem. And my tutor appreciates it as it's helping me quite a bit with tones and writing hanzi. And I'm so glad that this app will not run out on content as I continue learning. I recommend this app!

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for this wonderful and heartfelt review! 🙏 It means a great deal to us to hear that Dot Languages has become your go-to app after such a thorough search. We're especially happy that our support team has been helpful. It's fantastic that your tutor is finding the app useful too! We're committed to keeping the content growing so you'll never run out of material on your Chinese learning journey. Wishing you continued success with tones and hanzi, 加油! 💪

### 4/5 — love it!!

*2024-10-13, version 3.3.10*

i just wished they have stories as well, not just articles 😞😞😞🙏🙏

### 5/5 — Must have for learning Chinese

*2023-11-22*

I have used many Chinese learning apps and this one is the best. The sheer depth of content plus the follow up exercises help me retain and remember what I learned instead of just reading and forgetting. There is so much content in here for me to learn at my current level—it’s wonderful. No other app does that as well.

I also like how the app is tied to the new HSK 3.0. I had been studying the old HSK format before and the new one is MUCH better. The words are more useful for learning and the characters you learn will build your vocabulary faster.

This is the best Chinese learning app. Get it!

### 2/5 — Great potential, bugs and high prices are frustrating

*2023-11-01*

I loved this app before the recent update. The new limitations to stories read, though frustrating, would be ok if it worked. However there is a bug where if you leave the story and go back in the same story, that counts as two stories being read, and you’ll be locked out of it.

When I was at the end of HSK 2 there were also these exercises where you had to answer questions, and they were so difficult to answer correctly. There were moments where I wrote the exact sentence from the story or recommended sentence and it not only didn’t work, it takes up to 30 seconds to tell you that what you wrote was wrong.

I was close to paying for this app, but these bugs make it frustrating to use. I’ll be using Du Chinese as a reader now since I’m not taking the HSK anyway.

**Developer response:** Thank you for sharing your experience with our app. We're glad you enjoyed it before and want to let you know that we've made significant improvements in our recent updates, addressing some of the issues you've mentioned, such as the exercise challenges. Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we continually strive to enhance the user experience. If you encounter any more issues or have suggestions, we'd love to hear from you at contact@dotlanguages.com. We hope you'll consider giving the updated version a try.

### 4/5 — Very helpful

*2023-10-22*

Great app. Developers are clearly very active in updating the app. The illustrations are a new thing which I don’t think are useful. It does not enhance our Chinese learning experience to see a drawing and an English word. Would love an option for lifetime subscription to access the premium features.

**Developer response:** We apologize for the inconvenience. Some of our providers in the previous version of our app, only supported iOS 17, leading to issues with earlier versions of iOS. We're pleased to inform you that this has been resolved in the most recent version of our app. You might need to delete the version you already have installed first, to ensure no previous data is included with the update. If you encounter any issues, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at contact@dotlanguages.com. We would be happy to help ☺️

### 4/5 — Solid Chinese Learning App

*2023-10-20*

This app is really solid for helping you learn mandarin Chinese, especially with stroke order! I’m taking a college elementary mandarin class currently and wanted to find apps to help give me a leg up on the homework, tests and quizzes and this has definitely helped! When I first downloaded the app it didn’t work and I left a review saying so. Shortly afterwards the developers responded to my review and suggested certain things for me to do to get it to open and that they had fixed it and sure enough they had! Things I love about this app: - Stroke order learning! - Stories that include the vocabulary - Ability to select what you want to work on (i.e., listening, reading, or writing) Things I think could be improved: - Speaking exercises. I know the app says it’s being developed but this would really round out the app - More vibrant colors. The colors aren’t bad, but I feel like a wider variation in colors, backgrounds or something similar during exercises and practice lessons could give this app a very eye appealing look it it’s users - Pictures to help remember words. There is another app I use for learning mandarin which provides some illustrations of the characters to help one remember them better. It’s not a make or break, but it is something I've found helpful in remembering certain characters. Overall, this is a really great resource for learning mandarin and from my experience with it I highly recommend it for mandarin learners!

### 2/5 — The app doesn’t open for me

I have an iPhone 10 XR and this app doesn’t even open for me. If/when this gets fixed I’ll give a more insightful review for sure!

This app has been great for learning Chinese. The latest update broke the app though. It crashes on start up now.

*2023-10-08*

Great app, but disappointed that I can’t use it anymore.

### 5/5 — I love this app so much

*2023-09-16*

The UI is great. There is a dictionary that shows stroke order, and links to lessons where you can see the word in context. It also breaks down the words into characters and radicals, and shows similar words, all of which are linked. I enjoy reading the new story lessons, and practicing the content from the story. The character writing practice really helps me remember them and even draw them by memory. There are new stories all the time. The app is relaxing and rewarding.

I don’t usually leave reviews because it’s tedious. However, this app has NEVER made me watch an ad, so even after taking time to leave a review I feel that my time has not been wasted.

I’m also leaving a review because this is a free app and there are no ads. This is unheard of honestly and I don’t know how they paid the developers and fees, so I just wanted to show appreciation.

### 5/5 — Wonderful App

*2023-08-15*

I’ve been using this app for over 400 days now, and I really enjoy it. I’m a casual Mandarin learner and it’s really helped me to improve my reading skills and 汉字 writing skills. It is completely free, which I really appreciate. The app makes it easy to self study because each character is labelled with its HSK level, and the reading lessons begin with HSK 1. Overall, it id a wonderful app that I use daily to supplement my other Chinese resources.

The one thing I would love to see added, though, is a way to practice the tones for each character. The tones are presented with the pinyin sounds, and I think that having a way to practice inputting the correct tone during flashcard reviews would help me solidify which tones are used for each word. The current system makes it easy to forget about the tones if you know the general pinyin sounds, and I feel like I haven’t been learning the tones nearly as well as the other aspects. Just a suggestion though for improvement!!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — App not opening

*2026-04-12, version 4.6.1*

After signing up the app closes every time I try to open it, I’ve restarted my phone and reinstalled the app, still it crashes :(

### 1/5 — not good anymore

*2024-12-20, version 3.4.4*

it was good before they charged it. overpriced but too much bugs

### 1/5 — First glance

*2024-11-16, version 3.4.1*

Useless unless u pay. Hsk 7-9 not free.

### 1/5 — Naww bro

*2023-10-27, version 3.0.5*

The app doesn’t load at all, when i log in, the only thing i get is just the bear scree and it just stays like that. Just doesn’t work. And also kicks me out pf my login every time i open app. Awful

### 1/5 — The update is not good

*2023-10-18*

This was a great app before the new update. The sentence writing quiz questions are sometimes impossible to complete, even if you try the various corrections or even the example sentences word for word they will not work, and it takes forever to process what you wrote. Get rid of them or fix it but I’m about to delete this app at this point.

### 1/5 — Don’t Update

*2023-10-14*

I have been using this app for 485 days and the new update has ruined it for me. The features I have used for free for over a year have now been placed under a paywall with no option of a ads-based service. I’ve used this app to practice drawing hanzi for so long as it was a useful feature, and now I cannot do that at all.

Don’t update if you want to still have access to the features that matter.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your remarkable commitment to our app, spanning an impressive 485 days. Your dedication is invaluable to us, and we recognise the impact that the recent changes may have had on your user experience.

We want to share with you that the introduction of the premium version is an essential step towards sustaining and enhancing our app. The funds generated through this model are crucial in supporting the ongoing development and maintenance of both the free and paid versions. This approach enables us to continue providing quality features, including the ones you've valued for practicing drawing hanzi.

We deeply value your input and would love to hear more about your thoughts and suggestions. Your feedback is vital in shaping the future of our app. Please feel free to reach out to us at contact@dotlanguages.com. We are more than happy to discuss your concerns and explore potential solutions that could enhance your experience with our app.

### 1/5 — No streaks

*2023-08-14*

As ‚Today‘s Progress‘ and ‚Weekly Progress‘ doesn‘t fill up. Kind of useless….

### 1/5 — Working really well for a while, but it is now frozen

*2023-06-28*

Really liked this app when it was working and I would go on it daily. However, it froze about 2 weeks ago and never worked again. I have tried deleting the app, reinstalling, restarting my iPhone multiple times. Nothing worked. I can’t even contact the developer, so hopefully they see this review and fix whatever is wrong with it. Will update review if the problem is fixed. Thank you.

### 1/5 — Nul

*2023-03-18, version 2.9.6*

Ne marche pas

### 2/5 — App has gone severely downhill

*2025-01-16*

The latest update has taken away so much of the features and flexibility I used to love about the app. The app used to be such that the entire article was presented in a straightforward manner with the ability to listen to it at 0.6x, 0.8x or 1.0x speed, and you could start and stop the audio from anywhere in the article. Now the articles are presented in this overly gamified and controlled way where only one line of dialogue is presented at a time and you have to press continue to move forward while unnecessary pop ups for new vocab disrupt the flow. Once you get through clicking through the numerous continue buttons, there is seemingly no way to replay the audio except going back and starting over, so the flexibility to listen to the article from a specific spot is gone. I hate that I have no control or freedom in how I engage with the articles anymore. Not being able to replay the audio in the article because there is no longer a play button is a severe design flaw.

### 5/5 — Beste App zum Chinesisch lernen

*2026-07-03*

Für zwischendurch. Neben dem eigentlichen chinesisch lernen in Gruppen und Unterrichtseinheiten. Es ist wirklich vielseitig, schreiben, lesen, hören, sprechen. Es gibt viele Beispiele und die Geschichten sind interessant, ebenso nützlich, weil sie alltagsnahe Bausteine haben. Diese App hat eine Spende verdient. Ich danke allen Mitarbeitern, die ihr Wissen weitergeben.

### 5/5 — Very good app!

### 5/5 — Favorite Chinese learning app

*2026-01-18*

I just started using the app today and I already love it! I used HelloChinese before and then they suddenly wanted me to pay so i looked everywhere for another app until i found this one. Although i have to "redo" everything i learned on other apps it's been really fun and the dictionary feature is amazing. This is genuinely the best layout for any language learning app that I've ever seen and apparently it's free?? This app is so underrated.

**Developer response:** Thank you very much for the great review, it genuinely made our day! 🎉 We're so glad you found us and that the app has already clicked for you. The dictionary feature is definitely one of our favorites too, and we're always working to make it even better. Welcome to the Dot Languages community, and thank you for the kind words!

### 5/5 — Articles disappearance

*2023-12-13*

This really is a great app for mandarin learners and i’m very pleased with it. But i’ve been facing some issues lately when using it. The articles i’m reading disappeared when i hit the back icon and i couldn’t find it anywhere. Please kindly fix it. Thank you.

### 5/5 — Fix this bug please (otherwise amazing app!)

*2023-12-02, version 3.0.7*

I love this app. As an intermediate chinese learner, I benefit extremely from reading and writing practice this app offers. I could only reccomend it!

However, with the new update, I noticed a bug which happens after finishing a lesson. The “return” button appears in the main window below the practiced words. However, I can only scroll to a certain amount and the button is only visible partially making it very difficult to press. Please fix this annoying bug. Otherwise an amazing app!
