This is so close to perfect, what it needs is A) external midi control... so you can send chord and sequences changes to keep things tight.B) Also, as I said, the external sounds are whatever, and I don't have much use for a monophonic drum sequencer, so it would be cool if you could set the green track to behave like the regular melodic tracks when sending midi out. C) Also, the ability to transpose up and down octaves when sending midi would be awesome as well. Add that and this goes from a great app to a 5 star, genius level tool for coming up with crazy inhuman melodies. ### 4/5 — Original mobile groovebox *2017-06-11* Olympia Noise Co are true innovators in software musical instruments. They have a track record consisting of the outstanding Patterning drum sequencer as well as Ribbon (fka Ondes) and Chordion. dot Melody is a stripped back groovebox with a twist, the sequencer's interface is activated by a blank grid where you drop, tap and drag interconnected dots. Like Allihoopa's Figure, dot Melody may feel like too much of a toy on an iPad, on the iPhone it makes much more sense as a simple sketch pad for tight moments. Ideal for commuting or being creative in private spaces (ahem.) With its preset sounds you can focus on song structures and progressions with its easy to use pattern bank. However like Figure, it would be greatly improved with a export or multichannel record feature like say in ElasticDrums or audio output per channel like in Patterning. Then the sketches whipped up on your tea break could be uploaded to dissected and fleshed out on a DAW. Apps like this are often caught in a space where they conform to a preset ecosystem making them feel like toys but for them to evolve into bridges to professional tools, these kinds of exports could be great outlets. But toys are fun and the appeal of dot Melody is its dot chaining interface, a new way to play music. A huge feature is that it can even be used as a 3 channel MIDI controller for other apps or with the help of a MIDI interface could be used to control 3 hardware instruments! Olympia Noise Co deserve recognition along side developers like apeSoft for really pushing the boundaries of creating music on tablets and smartphones. ### 4/5 — Les sons! *2017-05-26* C'est une app simple, très musicale, mais (et ce n'est pas la seule) elle souffre d'une absence de sonorités intéressantes (vivantes, authentiques, expressives) et propose des sons synthétiques dont on est déjà gavés. If you are interested in ethereal bit or any non mainstream electronic music this is a buy. I still can't always predict what a pattern will sound like based on how it looks. Great work as usual! ### 5/5 — Joy *2016-11-17* Joy ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Whack.. but doesn’t need to be. *2024-06-03* Firstly, I adore Patterning and have all of the devs apps, Dot Melody is dope, had some great elements, sounds, capabilities- but the inability to quickly export midi and wav is absolutely missing and makes this app a pass for any suggestions. Audiobus recording is garbage- we need the ability to export our saves, otherwise- this was completely pointless and could have purchased something worthwhile. Removing from device(s) ### 1/5 — This_is_a_scam *2014-05-25* Crappy app. Bad presentation, boring sounds/interface/capabilities. Didn't even want to download it. For some strange reason when I tapped "details" while looking into this crap it selected "buy" and didn't prompt me for a password. Even now that I "accidentally" downloaded this junk I can very carefully and directly tap "details" and iTunes acts as if I selected buy/open. Something is fishy about that. Sure just get a few thousand people to think they accidentally downloaded a $3 useless app to gain a few extra bucks. ### 1/5 — Wish it was better *2014-05-08, version 1.0.1* It has a lot of potential but the learning curve kills it. Any sequencer is more precise and easy to use on IOS. In fact, the description was written better than the app itself. The program's capacity seemed to me to be greatly embellished through the use of open ended, broad statements, which paint many pictures of its few features. The app itself produces little more than random weirdness. The potential chaos that comes with apps of this sort has undergone a type of stupefied taming process via the limiting of the number of instruments to a paltry three, all of which are definitively ambient. I'm not saying that I hate this app, I'm sure I'll be able to come up with some sort of use for it, however subtle that may be. But the navigation is clunky, the sounds lack punch & the track programming brings to mind an analogy of a being with a beautiful head, arms and legs, sans the torso. The sequencer is the torso and it is what ties together programs like this. Weak programming capabilities hold this guy back from being a powerful "all-in-one" and keeping it in the awkward "unsynth" category. I do see their artistic vision of a "new type" of sequencer, but they took the all important editing screen and randomized it, without any possibility of further editing. That in itself turns this into nothing more than a toy. I'm going to take a guess that maybe 1% of all songs ever feature random instrument sequences. If I sound bitter, I apologize. I'm trying to write a productive review. However I just keep remembering all the great apps I have in my collection that didn't cost $3.99. Yes, I'm a cheapskate, but it's all relevant. ### 3/5 — Getting Better (free midi +) *2014-10-16, version 1.0.3* My expectations were high for this app considering the other excellent work this design house has put into the world. This app (so far) is not impressive. There are pages of notes one could review, but as this is a music app the app should be judged by how it sounds, and the sounds are not great. ### 4/5 — Needs AU3 *2024-05-26, version 1.1.1* It is a shame that such a nice app, with huge potential has been neglected. I have been working musically for decades and have tried every program and app trying to find something that could intuitively work for the way my mind works. I am likely to buy the rest of your apps. I rarely want to invest in music software because they feel so unintuitive for me. So so so grateful this exists. Die Bedienoberfläche ist simpel und auch für Menschen mit wenig musiktheoretisches Hintergrundwissen handhabbar, lässt aber dennoch erstaunlich komplexe Klanggebilde zu. So kommt man auch als Beginner schnell weg von den "handwerklichen" Fragen (Harmonielehre etc.), hin zu einem kreativen Prozess. Aber auch für Profis ist die App als Kreativtool interessant. Ich selbst nutze dot Melody als Inspirationsquelle um auf neue Melodien zu kommen, welche dann im Studio vertieft und verarbeitet werden.
