## What is DotPass Passwords?

DotPass is an app for generating and retrieving passwords. You enter a graphical pattern in a dot grid and a plain text seed word (like "facebook", "reddit", "work" or whatever makes sense to you), and the app then generates a password based on this unique combination you can use for this account.

As long as you remember the pattern you've chosen and the seed word for each password, you can get your passwords back any time you need it. But unlike other solutions your passwords are never stored or sent anywhere, so there is no password information on your device or online that can be stolen or lost and you don't need any network access.

The idea is that a graphic pattern and plain seed words are much easier to remember than strong passwords. Any change in either pattern or seed word results in a completely different password. So you can decide on one pattern and reuse together with different seed words for different accounts, and get good random-looking different passwords for each account.

- All generated passwords contain numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters to fulfill common password criteria.
- Select either 9 or 18 character passwords
- Once generated you can just tap to copy the password, if you've got Continuity set up you can also paste it in on your mac.
- For security app resets and clears any copied passwords from the pasteboard after use.

There is also a macOS version of DotPass available in the Mac App Store. So you can easily access the same passwords on your mac as well.

To make these passwords secure you must of course keep your pattern and seed words secret, just as you would with your password. If you are worried about someone looking over your shoulder you can use the extra privacy features in the app to hide the pattern, seed or password after entry. For added security the app automatically resets if left in the background more than a minute.

### 5/5 — Love the update.

*2022-07-23*

Have had and used this utility for years. Fantastically useful and easy to use without being overly time consuming.

### 3/5 — Nice idea but fail in practical application.

*2022-02-13, version 1.5.1*

It’s true as the other said, special character does create troubles.
Some websites ruled its password policy that it must contains all sort of special characters while some other websites prohibit some particular special characters to be in the password combination. This leads to the inconsistency of application.

**Developer response:** Yes, this is indeed an issue. Many sites require passwords to contain some special characters to make them more secure, and most at least allow them. So the passwords generated contain a set of commonly used such characters (like $!& etc) to make the passwords useful in the majority of cases. But a minority of sites (often with older less secure systems) don't allow specific special characters, meaning you can't use the dotpass generated passwords for them.

EDIT: With the 1.5.5 update there's now a way to copy the generated passwords without any special characters, which should be helpful in situations like these where the site has restrictions on allowed characters.

### 1/5 — How does it work

*2022-01-29*

This app didn’t work for me. There’s no instructions or technical support

**Developer response:** We're sorry to hear that you're having trouble with the app. You can find more information about how to use the app on https://www.lostminds.com/dotpass/ and if you're still having trouble, please contact support so we can help you out.

### 5/5 — 5 🤩⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

*2020-10-30*

Good work

### 1/5 — OBSOLETE APP!!!!

*2020-10-22*

Update 10/22/20: developer contacted me asking what special characters are giving me a problem. Each site is different in what they reject: $,&,*,! and ? Have all been rejected by various sites. Please create a toggle to remove special characters from password generation. AT&T and Xfinity are two major sites that reject characters.

This App has become OBSOLETE!!! DO NOT DOWNLOAD OR PURCHASE!!! It generates passwords with special characters rejected by the majority of apps and websites making it useless. WHAT A WASTE.

**Developer response:** What special characters is it you're having problems with? The passwords generated by DotPass are exactly the same as always and we've not heard any other complaints about invalid special characters since the original release in 2014.

You can read more about the special characters used and other technical details regarding the passwords and generation at lostminds.com/dotpass/security.php

EDIT: With the 1.5.5 update there's now a way to copy the generated passwords without any special characters, which should be helpful in situations like these where the site has restrictions on allowed characters.

### 5/5 — Does as described

*2020-03-28*

Perfect
If you’re having a problem, you’re doing something wrong.
Highly recommended

### 3/5 — Not bad

*2020-01-17*

Unfortunately, missing special characters in passwords, 3-stars

**Developer response:** It's true that some passwords (especially if you use 9 characters passwords and not 18) will not contain special characters, but most will. This is because there are quite few special characters when compared to numbers and letters, so if there was a rule that one character has to be a special character this would make the password much easier to guess and less safe.

### 5/5 — Great idea

*2017-11-23*

BUT,no special characters

### 5/5 — Perfect app but?!!

*2015-09-07*

Very cool application but needs to set a password to him

Thanks

### 5/5 — Nice App

*2015-08-04*

I wanted a simple app that would generate unique passwords to sites and apps without having to store them. Using the same design and word on any device creates the same code. You have access to your codes even if using it on a friend's device (providing they have the app)
