## What is DoYourBirds?

Do Your Birds is a daily bird-learning game. Every day you get three multiple-choice questions: a photo, four names, pick the right one. The birds come from the species people actually record near you, most common first, so you learn what you'll really see on your walk, not a textbook list.

It takes about two minutes. There are no lessons to complete and nothing to grind. One quiz a day, then get on with your day.

How it works
• Three questions daily, drawn from the birds around your location.
• Get one wrong and it comes back in a later quiz until you have it.
• Answer a bird correctly three times and it's Mastered, for good.
• A perfect day earns a bonus. Keep your streak going day after day, with a freeze in reserve for the odd missed day.
• Every bird you meet joins your collection, with a field-guide page: photos, where and when to find it, what it sounds like, and the look-alikes that trip people up.
• Learn: a short daily study list of the birds you missed, the ones you're close to mastering, and the ones coming up next.
• Community: see how your friends are doing on a simple points board.

Built for beginners and for people who've always meant to learn their local birds. Start with the common ones, and in a few weeks you'll know the birds in your garden, your park and your commute by sight.

Photos are contributed by naturalists on iNaturalist and Wikimedia Commons under Creative Commons licences, credited on every image. Species information is drawn from Wikipedia and iNaturalist.

Do Your Birds uses your location only to choose local species. There are no ads and no tracking.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.2.1 — 2026-10-06

Bird names the way you know them. In Southern Africa you'll now see the names from BirdLife South Africa's checklist, the ones in Roberts and Sasol: Hadeda (Hadada) Ibis, Common Moorhen, Cape Vulture, Neddicky and more. In Britain and Ireland, the British names: Moorhen, Robin, Pied Wagtail. Search still finds the old names. Thank you to the player who pointed this out!

Photos of the birds near you. Photos taken near where you live now come first, so Southern Africa's cormorants have white breasts and its hoopoes are the African kind.

Name history. When a species has recently been renamed, merged or split, a line under its name tells you, like the Great (White-breasted) Cormorant, or the Knysna Turaco that used to be the Knysna Lourie. Tap it to see what changed.

Fixes. Species names are capitalised properly, and long names wrap on the home screen.

### 1.2 — 2026-10-06

Share your birds. After the day's three, tap "Share today's birds" (or the share button on Review) to send friends a link to your day: the three species, your score and streak, with a picture that shows up right in the chat. Profile has "Tell a friend" too.

An answer page that helps you learn. Got one wrong? You'll see the species it really was — starting with the photo you were just asked about — with the one you picked below it, each clearly labelled, so you can compare the two. Swipe through more photos of each species too.

Search your collection. The Collection has a search bar. It matches other names too — Afrikaans, Zulu, and regional English names where we have them. Tiles are cleaner: just the name, a red ↺ on any species you recently got wrong, and a badge once you've mastered it.

A livelier Community page. Bigger avatars, the categories each player has switched on, and how many species they've collected. Tap a player to see which species they got right and wrong.

A friendlier start for new players. Setup is now four quick steps — perfect timing, now that you can invite friends.

New avatar editor. Dial in exactly how your avatar looks on the Community tab. Existing players: it's under Profile → Edit Public Profile.

Friends. Tap any player on the Community board and add them as a friend, then switch the board to Friends to see where you stand.

An evening nudge, if you want one. Settings → Notifications has a second, optional reminder (6pm by default, pick your own time). It's only sent if you haven't done your birds that day — finish in the morning and you'll never hear from it.

More practice, fewer new species. We've tweaked how each day's species are picked: a little more revision of species you've already met, and fewer new species each week.

A cleaner home screen. The new Learn section shows nine species to get to know. A red ↺ marks one you recently got wrong, green binoculars one you'll meet in a quiz soon. Tap any species to study it.

Report a confusing photo. Press and hold any photo: there's now a "Multiple species confusion" option for shots with more than one kind of bird in them, and "Something else" with room to tell us what's wrong. Full-screen photos now show the species' name too.

Fixes. Lots of small fixes and polish throughout. Thank you to everyone who tested!

### 1.1 — 2026-09-17

Feedback and suggestions. Found a bug or got an idea? Profile > Feedback / Suggestions. Attach up to three screenshots; every message is read by a human.

Report a photo. Press and hold any bird photo to flag it: wrong species, an illustration, too far away, blurry, or a specimen. Reported photos are checked and replaced.

Public profiles show the last 7 days. Tap anyone on the Community board to see the birds they were asked each day, what they got right, and their points.

Community, tidied. A quieter list, a player count, and a small "+N" under each score showing points banked since yesterday.

Display names are unique. As you type a name you'll see straight away whether it's free, with a suggestion if it isn't.
