The story is great, the game is great. The "team" that converted this to mobile is an abomination! Most 5 year-olds speak better English than this translation team, and the fact that you can't mute a mobile game is UTTERLY PREPOSTEROUS! Shame, shame, shame on whomever is responsible for this. Game control pad is over-done/hypersensitive for mobile gaming, and the camera angles on this "3D conversion" are an unnecessary hassle and very confusing. Wow! Dragon Quest III was SO GOOD! Like literally the best mobile RPG I've ever played. I simply just don't understand how this disaster was ever published. FOLLOW-UP: Above was my review of the game while still in Chapter 3 or 4. All still applies! Translation is truly awful and the camera angles in this 3D version cause immense confusion and literally defy logic- there are places where you will inevitably be forced to use a guide to manipulate your way through the game because of poor map design. Still though, now that I got through the [true] ending, the nostalgia flows freely. This is [was] SUCH AN AMAZING GAME! Best storyline ever. Well done, Square Enix (circa 1990)! And then again on the Nintendo DS. Almost a flawless game, just as I remember. One little bug, I can’t seem to get Hoffman‘s place off the ground. Maybe it’s just me. The game’s cloud save function no longer works, so you’re stuck playing the game on the device you started on. Apple has expanded controller support, yet Square Enix Dragon Quest games do not support them. Not only that, but these games can only be played in portrait view. Making it awkward playing these games on larger phones or tablets, or even with your device connected to a tv. So Squeenix, either stop the premium price grab, or start providing a game experience that justifies the price. Because right now it’s almost just another mobile trash game. ### 3/5 — Controller support *2022-01-19, version 1.1.1* Please add controller support. ### 3/5 — Amazing Game; Broken Cloud Save System *2021-09-29, version 1.1.1* I absolutely adore this game, and I would love nothing more than to give this game a 5 star rating. However, the current cloud saving system is largely broken. My iPhone 12 Pro is able to upload my current save data to the cloud no problem, however the server fails to retrieve and synchronize that data when I try to download it to my 10.5” iPad Pro. This was present on both iOS (and iPad OS) 14 & 15. Will update my review once this has been fixed. ### 2/5 — Awful translation *2021-06-19* I originally played this on the NES. This is much worse. To add dialect and accent, they translated the Japanese to a language (such as Russian) and then translated THAT to English. So there are several idiosyncrasies that just fail, to the point of distracting from the charm of the game. I essentially bought this for Taloon’s chapter, but it just didn’t scratch that nostalgia itch due to the awful translation. ### 5/5 — Great game but cloud saving failed! *2021-04-27* It’s an amazing game. If you like RPG, that’s a must have game. Everything’s just right on point in that game. The story’s nothing too special, but it makes the job very well. This game offer a lot of future replayability, because the story’s not too thick, and you don’t get interrupted all the time with useless dialogues boxes. DOWNSIDE: It support cloud saving ONCE, after that, I was never able to synchronize my saved data on my second device, no matters how hard I tried. Therefore, make sure you play this game on your best device right from the start. I keep receiving this message all the time: «Data not found» ### 2/5 — Marred by technical problems and interface issues. *2021-02-13* My understanding is that the game itself is quite good. Sadly, it is hidden behind an imprecise and uncomfortable interface (seriously, iPad players prepare for thumb discomfort) with no controller support, and a cloud sync feature that never actually works. No escape to the iPhone version for these poor despairing thumbs. ### 2/5 — I don’t care about your music or SFX *2021-01-31* Stop forcing me to listen to your stupid in game music and sfx. There is zero purpose for you to force my other audio apps to shutdown when I open this app. I played DQ1-3 for hundreds of hours listening to audible and loved it. But now I CHOOSE to not to open DQ4 simply because my audiobook stops the moment I open DQ4. Game was done saving so closed out the window. When I next loaded the app save data was completely gone, including most recent cloud save data. Seriously ### 5/5 — The definitive way to play! *2024-02-01* Usually with mobile releases of games you expect things to be worse than they were on the original console, but this is absolutely the best way to play DQ4, in English at least. It takes the very solid DS remake and improves upon it by translating and implementing the party chat feature that was originally left out of international releases. If you've never played DQ4 then you should know it's a great game, easily a couple dozen hours of gameplay, charming characters, fantastic monster design, and while maybe not the most original story a nonetheless fun tale of saving the world. ### 5/5 — A must play! *2023-06-27* Dragon Quest 4 is very suitable for newcomers to the series. The difficulty is quite tame in comparison to the other DQ games. The game length is perfect with an average of 30 to 40 hours of gameplay.
