### 3/5 — One thing missing

*2026-06-04, version 1.1.6*

Just add controller support.

### 2/5 — NEEDS controller support

*2026-05-12, version 1.1.6*

This is an amazing game and would be so good to play on an iPad, but the touch controls are pretty bad. Absolutely needs controller support.

### 3/5 — Desperately needs controller support

*2026-03-25, version 1.1.6*

Desperately needs controller support

### 4/5 — Amazing

*2026-03-09, version 1.1.5*

This is a phenomenal game! BUT the one thing that would make it better and I would give it 5 stars if they would do this is give in controller support! I hate using touchscreen. I want to play on my iPad and it would make it so much easier with controller support.

### 3/5 — Dragon Soul

*2026-02-22, version 1.1.5*

I agree with the others that missing the orchestral music and voice acting sucks. What really got on my nerves was them removing Dragon Soul altogether. Unless I ran into a weird glitch. My Hero is level 71 with 100 courage, spears, and swords…I loved this game on the PS2 and started the series on the NES.

### 3/5 — Awesome game falls short to ps2 version sadly

*2025-11-30, version 1.1.5*

Plays ok controls are buggy and there is no choice for remote play, adding remote play would make it easier to play

### 3/5 — Fast wie damals,…

*2025-10-22*

Volle Punkte gibt es leider erst wenn: 1: Deutscher Text UND Sprachausgabe kommen. 2: Item‘s wieder Symbole bekommen. Ansonsten macht es Super viel Spaß! :)

### 3/5 — Freezes

*2025-10-13, version 1.1.5*

I'm playing on the iPhone 17 Pro Max with operating system 26.0.1 and occasionally the touchscreen buttons won't work, somewhere but some won't.
The most frustrating is in the casino, placing down 30 bets and get halfway through and only option on the touchscreen that works is the X which backs you out of the board completely wasting minutes of placing all those bets.
This also happens during fights, you try to press execute and nothing happens and you basically have to close the game and open it back up again which is really frustrating if you're fighting King metal slimes or bosses.

### 3/5 — Almost Perfect!

*2025-10-11, version 1.1.5*

The gameplay is exactly how I expected, but the not being able to rotate the screen drives me absolutely crazy!

### 3/5 — Controller

*2025-08-30, version 1.1.5*

I would give 5 stars if you could use a controller.

### 3/5 — External Audio Support Please

*2025-07-24, version 1.1.5*

It’s a testament to how good this game is and how hard-working the team maintaining it is that this gets updates still. Thank you! Support for external audio will make this a perfect port of this game and keep it alive for new players!

### 4/5 — Great game

*2025-06-17, version 1.1.3*

I love this game and playing on my iPad is nice but I want controller support. It would make playing a lot more enjoyable.

### 2/5 — Fix the freezing

*2025-03-28, version 1.1.3*

I love dragon quest, however the game keeps freezing whenever I want to save at the church
Fix it

### 2/5 — An okay experience…

*2025-03-04, version 1.1.3*

No voice acting and it only supports vertical play.

### 4/5 — Great game

*2025-02-28, version 1.1.3*

Needs to be converted to be able to use a backbone

### 4/5 — High tension

*2025-02-13, version 1.1.3*

Why was the transformation from ps2 version not ported

### 3/5 — Near Perfect

*2025-01-05, version 1.1.3*

Needs an update to allow external audio like Dragon Quest 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Otherwise great!

### 3/5 — Ich verstehe euch nicht

*2024-12-03*

Das spiel ist super, aber wieso keine deutsche Sprache.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Eine Frechheit!

*2026-05-27*

### 1/5 — Give us the voice acted version

*2025-10-28, version 1.1.5*

It’s 2025, give us the option to download the voice acted version of the game. I have the storage. If it had the voice acting this would be a 10/5 for me but not having it in there steals so much from such an amazing game that I stopped playing it in under an hour. This game was meant to have the audio!

### 1/5 — Not the real thing.

*2025-10-21, version 1.1.5*

The voices are gone. The characters do not return to original position during battle sequences. Cannot name your monster team anything “offensive” because…I don’t know…it’s not an online game…maybe your mom is on the development team? And it’s honestly not as challenging as the original. Not the original, and not worth the money. Deserves 0 stars, but that might hurt someone’s feelings.

### 1/5 — Crashes repeatedly.

*2025-07-02, version 1.1.3*

I want a refund. Game keeps crashing. Probably should think about updating it.

### 1/5 — Not worth it

*2024-11-17, version 1.1.3*

I loved the ps2 version and the nds. They were great games. This one however when they tried to make it work just failed so hard! They got rid of the voice acting, which was one of the key defining features of the game when it originally came out and is so iconic. The UI with this version is terrible so clunky without a speck of polish.

### 1/5 — No controller support?

*2024-10-16, version 1.1.3*

I’m not sure why you would port a console game with no controller support or landscape mode

### 1/5 — No sound

*2024-10-09, version 1.1.3*

I’m so sad there’s no sound no music and that’s the main reason why I bought the game. I wish that sound was added.

### 1/5 — Gut aber

*2024-08-09*

Habe das Game früher immer auf der ps2 gespielt
Aber leider gibt es hier keine deutsche Sprache und da mein Englisch echt katastrophal ist kann ich es leider nicht wirklich genießen

### 1/5 — No voice actors?

*2024-07-17, version 1.1.3*

I never remember I had to read the main story. Not controller compatible

### 1/5 — Cannot progress

*2024-04-05, version 1.1.3*

I played this game for years on the PS2 and loved it. It truly is one of the best dragon quest games. But this port is terrible. It’s very buggy and the control system is trash. No voice acting ruins the flow. But by far the worst part is I literally can’t beat the game. I’m stuck in the royal hunting grounds because I can’t throw the pumpkin onto the log. It glitches every time and throws it onto the grass which doesn’t wake the dragon. It is truly sad to see this beautiful game in such an atrocious state.
FIX YOUR GAME!!!!!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — I still love this game!

*2026-06-24, version 1.1.6*

This is a localization of the Japanese port of Dragon Quest VIII, so it lacks the fluff that Americans (and Europeans?) got when that was localized. It's a gorgeous game, it sounds beautiful, and it’s just a joy to play. I’m playing it all over again in 2026 and it somehow has aged like fine wine.

There are no micro transactions, no stamina bars, none of that. You just play at your own pace and go on a meaningful adventure.

I actually appreciate the one handed control scheme and am surprised that I felt differently years ago. Perhaps it’s because I’m playing on a bigger phone now, but it feels just right to me now. I can also have lunch and play or sneak in a quick battle while I wait for something else.

The other Dragon Quest mainline games are great on iOS but I still appreciate how modern this one feels even today. I wonder how a mobile port of Dragon Quest XI would look like…

In any case, I highly recommend this game!!

### 5/5 — Best game!!

*2026-06-01, version 1.1.6*

This is THE best game in the DQ series!!! I don’t understand how anyone could give it less than 5 stars!!!

### 5/5 — WAY BEFORE ITS TIME

*2026-05-31, version 1.1.6*

ABSOLUTELY IMMACULATE GAME AND EVERYTHING ABOUT IT AND NOW ITS $12

### 5/5 — iOS version is good

*2026-03-27, version 1.1.6*

This game when purchased on iOS specifically, doesn’t have the network requirement to verify registry key on every launch.

This mean you can play offline without any problem but only on iOS.

### 5/5 — Controller Support

*2025-05-17, version 1.1.3*

Controller support would be amazing!

### 5/5 — Controller support

*2025-02-13, version 1.1.3*

Would love controller support

### 5/5 — Outstanding

*2024-10-30, version 1.1.3*

Just outstanding make of this game. Full portrait mode so it doesn’t look like ur playing a game, let alone one as immersive as DQ

### 5/5 — It’s great

*2024-06-22, version 1.1.3*

I’m happy I can play my favourite game on my phone, so far so good runs smooth on my iPhone 15 pro. Really wish it had the voice acting tho

### 5/5 — Great game, great port

*2024-04-22, version 1.1.3*

Wow I really impressed how really works well this port, enjoy this amazing game.

### 5/5 — Best RPG Ever

*2024-03-11, version 1.1.3*

This is the HD remake of the Japanese version of DQVIII translated into local languages. The music is not orchestral and there is no voice acting.

But this is my favorite game ever and the iOS version is the first time I’ve ever played it. I highly recommend it for the music, story, and open world adventure in your pocket.

The controls work well, even for just using one hand. And the graphics of this game have never looked better.

I highly recommend this game, even in this mobile version. It’s my favorite game of all time. Try it out, fall in love with it, and then pick up the PS2 or 3DS versions to hear voices just like I did. And then keep playing it on iOS because it’s always there!
