However, as an “ID (identification)” app, there needs to be some improvements made: when one needs sees a dragonfly in the wild and would like to identify it, you would seemingly need to scroll through all of the species until you found a picture that matches what you saw. Maybe the developers can put in some kind of ID features from plant- identification apps or bird-identification apps, such as an Identification Engine/Interface: wing markings, abdomen/tail markings/color, thorax, location, etc….. or maybe even a picture identification feature. ### 3/5 — Meh *2020-07-09* First time I tried it and I couldn’t find anything that matched. As more and more records are submitted to OC, This app should improve. One feature that doesn't seem to work is the map filter. It would be very handy to know what species are native to a given area, but I can't seem to get it to provide that information. A few things to add... *2017-06-15* This app is a fantastic tool for field and office. The Field Guide is great, but could use more photos at diff angles. The option to submit observations is something recently added, and can I say a great big THANK YOU! This offers the ability for you to upload observations straight to OdonataCentral - a huge time saving device. The only thing lacking with that, is that you cannot submit an observation without linking it with a species. This is impractical because so many species photographed will be unable to narrow down to species without closer scrutiny, but having the genus documented is still valuable data. Also it eliminates a great resource in amateurs documenting things. Except for the very obvious common species, the general public will most likely avoid submitting an observation unless they can put "unknown" as the designate. I encourage the developers to add the ability to add a couple of categories for submission... - unknown damselfly - unknown dragonfly And perhaps categories down to family... I.e. - unknown forktail - unknown meadowhawk Etc... Apart from that addition needed, and the addition of "regions" or "states" for search ability, this app is GREAT and worth 4 stars. I have tried many times to have it send me a link but it won’t. Some suggest it and add an extra screen to navigate through which is bad enough. But this one won't let you proceed unless you register. Just buy Ed Lam's book on dragon and damsel flies. That was *very* useful to me. The app remains minimally useful for my purposes but I’m disappointed in the lack of upgrades these past three years and the missing functionality. I wish I had not upgraded to version 2. *** My review below (which was rated 5 stars)was in reference to the version before the major update more than a year ago. The older version was more useful for me. In particular what I have been missing in this version for the past year+ has been the ability to look at any destination I might be traveling to and then look at locations in that area where users have reported dragonflies, click on that location and see what had been seen there filtered by timeframe (ie if I’m going to be there in mid-June reports from September are almost certainly not relevant). In the current version since the revision it is no longer possible to look at a location to see what dragonflies have been found there. One must start by choosing a species to see where it has been found, but even then it is not possible to see what other species may have been found at the same location without going back to the list of species, choosing a different species and looking at its locations. The old version was very useful for looking at the big picture of what might be flying in a given area at the time of a future trip so I could plan my side excursions for dragonfly outings when attending a class reunion, for example. The app is no longer very useful for that and I use it much less than I used to. ****** Dragonfly ID has helped me have a much more productive year in terms of whittling away at some of my Lifelist goals. I've been able to find and photograph several speciesi would not otherwise have found on my travels but also not far from home.
