### 3/5 — Could be more balanced

*2025-08-29*

If I remember correctly, this game either invented the roguelike deckbuilder genre or was one of the very first. I appreciate its place in history and can see why it was so revolutionary. It provided several hours of addictive fun. Unfortunately it suffers from two major flaws: it gets repetitive over time due to the limited number of cards, and there are too many “take that, you’re dead and there’s nothing you can do about it” moments.

### 3/5 — Fun but ruthlessly hard

*2024-12-27, version 1.12*

I know how rouges work, but I feel like there should be more difficulty levels to spread things out. There’s some battles you get annihilated on that should be straight forward wins.

### 5/5 — So many hours of play…

*2022-04-07, version 1.12*

This game is proof that anyone with a copy of unity, MS Paint, and a dream can create one of the best cars roguelikes ever made.

The UI isn’t great at times, and the visuals are trying their best. But it’s a deep game with incredible variety of play.

### 3/5 — Really needs an update for modern phones.

*2021-08-23, version 1.12*

The 4:3 aspect ratio is rotated into landscape on modern iPhones. The whole UI needs a big update to fit modern devices. It’s not even the graphics that need updating, which would be incredible, it’s just the antiquated layout more suited to older devices.

Your experience may be better on an iPad.

The UI even has the clock and icon bar at the top of the screen rotated 90 degrees.

### 5/5 — One of the best mobile games

*2021-04-17, version 1.12*

It’s a bold statement, yes it is. I fully believe that it is. I’ve owned this game for many years, and while it’s not updated (besides to update functionality), I still enjoy coming back to it now and then. It’s a challenging game but one I’m sure would blow up if it had a bit of attention.

If you read this Dev, awesome job and thank you. Updates would be awesome

### 5/5 — Surprisingly Very Fun!

*2021-01-31, version 1.12*

I was skeptical at first but decided to give it a try. Glad I did! One of my favorite purchases now!

### 5/5 — So good

*2021-01-16, version 1.12*

People see the graphics and move on but this game is frickin awesome. If you like rogue-like deck builders, this game deserves a lot of love!

### 5/5 — Broken on iOS 14.2

*2020-12-09, version 1.12*

Sorry to use review as medium, but cannot get to support. The app stopped working for me on iOS 14.2.
Great game!

### 2/5 — Great game, lazy execution

*2020-09-05, version 1.12*

The balance on the game is awful. The vast majority of games are unwinnable. If you’re lucky you might get cards to help you advance but you probably won’t.

### 5/5 — 2 years for every class to beat lord

*2020-08-19*

I played this game for about 2 years. Some people would argue the game is unbalanced. It is true. Some classes are naturally weaker than others in terms of probability of beating the final boss. However, it doesn’t mean they are weak when you get all key cards for them. Warrior and paladin are hard to beat the game because they require more specific key cards but I once killed the Lord of the Dream in my first turn using warrior and paladin with scimitars and bleeders.
The only annoying thing is that sometimes enemies can happen to have ability to exactly counter your build. For example, vampire boss is immune to poison when you choose poison build. You can only concede and restart your next run.

### 5/5 — Don’t let the graphics fool you

*2020-07-24, version 1.12*

This game is top tier!

Tons of depth and replay ability. Worth every penny, a must buy if you like deck building RPGs.

### 5/5 — Don’t judge a game by it’s cover!

*2020-05-28*

This game has amazing depth to it, especially after unlocking the more special rule-changing classes, braving the hardest difficulty to take on a very ultimate endgame boss.

It may seem difficult at first, randomly unfair and you will get stuck in unwinnable situations. But endure, spend your achievement points unlocking cards, permanent passives and traits (Don’t waste on reviving yourself)... and the amount and weight of the decisions you can make in game is amazing.

Each character class is diverse in practically every way too, and not just skin deep.

To think I found this game as an alternative for SLAY THE SPIRE not being on iOS (yet). It’s actually much better in all areas except for visual/sound presentation. It’s a real shame that many will overlook this true gem cause of that. Which is why I decided to actually write a review and promote it everywhere I go. It should not be missed!

### 5/5 — Amazing game but...

*2020-04-13, version 1.12*

This is an amazing game, highly recommended. However, devs, please ad more content!!

### 5/5 — Fun game, great value

*2020-03-17*

This game is a robust dungeon crawler with combat resolved via decks that are customized from a starting class over the course of a 30 minute adventure.

The plot is nonexistent, but the game systems are fun and it has tons of replay value-there’s much variety between classes and within each class.

If you haven’t already, check out Night of the a Full Moon for a spiritual successor that is a much lower challenge but still fun.

### 1/5 — Feedback

*2025-10-17, version 1.12*

Hey, I am someone who’s blind, I thought your game was accessible, is there anyway you’d be willing to make the game accessible.

### 1/5 — Overrated and Frustrating

*2022-07-10*

This a cute but undercooked game jam kind of jam that feels more like a proof of concept than a finished product. I don't mind the graphics, but the game has a serious problem with perceivable consequence. It just does a very poor job of conveying WHY something is happening and what (if anything) the player could have done to prevent it- you'll be doing great, then 2 or 3 rounds in a row you'll just start your turn with no cards in your hand and there'll be absolutely nothing you can do about it except let the enemy pick your health down to nothing. Game over.

The incremental progress from the countless unlocks (I swear I've never even seen some of the cards I've supposedly unlocked) begins to feel like nothing as you bash your head against the random number generator just hoping the next ~40 minutes won't turn out to be a complete waste of time, because (for instance) the dungeon just didn't spawn any healing locations on your side of an elite enemy that's 2 levels higher than you.

There' an easy mode, but I can hardly see the point because playing it locks you out of any kind of achievement or progress and still puts you in unwinnable situations.

I have to respect what the designer did here, but it just needs SO MUCH work in terms of not randomly sticking players into unwinnable situations when they've nothing wrong that I just can't see myself recommending it to anybody. It's just not fun or rewarding to play. This game's 4.6 star rating is utterly baffling to me. Maybe an older version had some feature that's now missing that mitigated the game's problems? Or maybe it just feels a lot worse when you play it after later deck-building roguelites that iterated on the concept? I honestly have no idea. Buying this game is functionally paying money to have a program waste a ton of your time making you slightly annoyed.

### 1/5 — Oof

*2022-04-05, version 1.12*

I loved slay the spire, I was told to play this game. I gave it a shot for a few hours and it was utterly disappointing. Complete waste of time for me. I can definitely see where Slay the spire got some of its influence. But this? God awful game. This game appears to be quite heavily luck based instead of skill. There’s little point in even saving cards for use later. Complete slog. Press play all press hourglass rinse wash repeat. An idle clicker game has more depth than this.

### 1/5 — Unbalanced

*2020-07-28*

This game is so unbalanced. You can have all the spells you need to defeat most of the monsters in a room and then a rare will spawn and absolutely destroy you. The Sphinx enemy is completely overpowered for no reason. I made it to the second floor and the only way I could get to the boss was by killing a sphinx. I had at least 60 heath but was playing a mage class. The Sphinx has a broken ability where he can make you unable to play certain cards, but instead of rotating between what cards I can and can’t play it just stayed at spell cards. So the entire match I was unable to use spell cards. I was using a mage build with the best spells but non were effective. I finally beat him with the few melee abilities I had and right in the way of the boss was another rare Sphinx... TWO IN ONE ROOM. I’ve been stuck on floor 2 for weeks now because of the broken enemy mechanics. Fix your game I’m on normal mode

### 1/5 — Algorithm to waste your time

*2020-07-07*

It’s pretty cut and clear, it’s meant to waste time. Fine if the game was actually enjoyable, but it’s like pulling teeth. To get better cards, you need to die. Which means they understood that it is not at all possible for a first run to get farther than the second level. Makes me wonder if they have a chart they made that shows hours put into the game relative to how far you can get.

I’m my opinion if you’re going to do something like this “game” tried to do, make it possible to win via skill/good choices, instead of forcing you to grind out the necessary points/cards to progress.

Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for something to pass the time. Something fun.

### 1/5 — Not great..,

*2020-02-22, version 1.12*

Very simple, fairly dull, and not tremendously well designed. A card battler where the battles are largely determined by the composition of your deck vs your opponents, with little skill. Most outcomes are essentially predetermined from their start based on what cards each deck contains.

### 1/5 — Overrated

*2019-08-12, version 1.12*

Seen all the positive reviews and decided to give this game a go. It’s visual design and overall game design is elementary. It’s actually not very fun to play at all.

### 1/5 — Not Good

*2019-05-30, version 1.12*

Playing this on an XR and it only uses 2/3 of the screen. that combined with tiny buttons makes this an unenjoyable experience. on an iPad...

...it's much more playable, but the art is bad, and not in a charming or nostalgic way, imo.

the gameplay is fine, I guess. reading the other reviews leaves me a little perplexed. it's really nothing special. something like Meteorfall in the same genre is MUCH better, I thought.

would not pay anything if I had to do it over again.

### 1/5 — Want my money back

*2018-11-09, version 1.12*

This is not a good game. Clearly the reviews are not independent.

### 1/5 — Not as great as people hype it to be.

*2018-07-12, version 1.12*

After having drudged through my first 6 hours of this title I’ve found it extremely hard to understand the enjoyment people have with it.

Throughout many of the reviews you’ll find people talking about how the game has this supposedly great depth of play. Yet I’d argue it only has the ground work for depth, as no matter who you start your dungeon runs with, there will always be a subset of specifically named enemy decks that can counter the strategy you characters deck will inherently build into.
Which is a good thing since that’s what help’s in creating a meta game, but in this case, where missing the ability to adjust the cards in are decks in-between match’s in order to help out in improving the odds to compete against these counter strategy’s (I.e like having a sideboard to swap in and out the less effective cards in preparation for the specific enemy).

But because removing cards from your deck requires the use of very finite resources it isn’t really reasonable to spend them to hurt your decks gameplan, especially since your already using them to get rid of the intentionally horrible cards included in every starting deck. And so games just devolve into brute forcing your way through these poor match ups and cross your fingers for good draws, else you have to start from the beginning all over again.
Which is sad since there’s a beastiary that provides you with a hint about how you should handle any given FOE, but sadly, these nice little tips fall short since you’ll be spending all of you resources just trying to scrap together a passable deck that’ll more then likely be trumped by the power creeped version of the decks of the 2nd-4th floor.

So to cap this off, I extremely hate the fact you have to spend hours of time just letting yourself lose over and over in order to unlock skills and cards that supposedly help in actually making yourself competitive against these pretty one sided match’s. You should be able to start a fresh install being able to win if your a good player, not lose 100 times before you can maybe start winning runs.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — 5 stars all the way

*2025-09-26*

Well… maybe not the art but it grows on you too ha! I have to periodically delete this game because I can’t stop playing and I need to sleep and work, etc… but I come back a couple times a year- 1. because it’s an excellent rogue dungeon crawl rpg but also 2. because there just aren’t a lot of games of this caliber available. I’m switching between balatro, hearts, and dream quest most of the time I need a game break. Well worth the price and your time. Try not to rage quit when you die - you’ll have to get past a couple humps before you level your skills. Try kitten a couple times then take on the harder challenges - then feel like demi god on professor mode

### 5/5 — My favourite iOS game ever

*2025-03-28, version 1.12*

Don’t worry about the graphics. The design of this game is incredible, I like it so much more than slay the spire which copied this game greatly but then made some parts worse. Dream quest is less fiddly and in particular takes less time to play through the early easy game where choices in battle don’t matter as much. I’ll be so sad if this game ever disappears from the App Store; it’s the only game I play.

### 5/5 — due for update

*2024-10-22, version 1.12*

hey peter, i been waiting since before the pandemic for the update. and ill never stop waiting

### 5/5 — Brilliant Game

*2024-09-03, version 1.12*

No update in 7 years, runs like a charm. Still one of the best games available on iOS. No gambling influenced in-game economy with in-app purchases; just addictive and creative gameplay. Part card game, board game, dungeon crawl rpg, and puzzle game all in one. Unique and satisfying. (Yes, there is an in-game economy but you cannot spend real money.)

### 5/5 — My Favorite Game of All Time

*2024-03-16, version 1.12*

If you like Slay the Spire, meet its inspiration.

### 5/5 — Must buy

*2023-11-18, version 1.12*

So much fun, especially on a long plane ride. Would recommend to anyone for a good strategy dungeon game.

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2023-09-08, version 1.12*

I play a LOT or roguelike/card battler type games and this is one of my favorites. It has been one of a few games I bother to keep installed on my phone for years

### 5/5 — Best ios game I got and I have a lot of games!

*2022-12-04, version 1.12*

Been playing games since Atari and was a magic the gathering nerd. I buy more games than have time to play. This is my favorite game period and then slay the spire soon after. Probably have over 1k hours of play on this as well as on Steam. More you play and learn what cards work rite and unlock them it opens the game up. This game is all strategy with a little luck in deck building. You have to have a good brain to get good at this one. The boss and elite fights can be hectic. But as long as you figure out and know what cards work best you can eventually succeed!

### 5/5 — Please make a dream quest 2!

*2022-09-23, version 1.12*

My most played game, and I’ve had this game for years and still play it daily. So much fun and challenging.

### 5/5 — Best Rogue-like Deck Builder!

*2022-07-27, version 1.12*

Honestly I haven’t been able to put my phone down since installing the game! Slay the Spire was definitely inspired by this game.
Once you get past the charming art style the mechanics are amazing!
