Why? ### 1/5 — Worst App Ever! *2024-06-27, version 1.13.4* This app has always been bad but they have managed to make it even worse. It can take over a week for a trip to stop ‘calculating’. When it does it is unbelievably inaccurate. Of my last 10 trips 7 reported as distracted driving. Each of these trips was local, no highways, texts, phone calls, sudden stops or anything remotely distracted. The phone is either in my pocket or in the center console. Customer service is equally useless. My SO is having the exact same issues. Tough to get a discount when you can’t log accurate data. I try everything I can to catch a break and this app was helping catch a discount when I drive on my time. But when I am at work I used to put the app on standby for a day. Now I can’t because it took that option away. Now it’s going to use 911 response trips as an assessment of my driving and I’m not even behind the wheel 7/10 times. ### 1/5 — Standby is gone *2024-06-04, version 1.13.4* Standby is gone with new update. Needs to be brought back. I work M-F and am continuously stop and go which logs about 40 trips a workday as a passenger. It takes up to a week to “calculate the trip” and once done I now have to change 100s for that workweek to riding in a work vehicle. There’s no option if you are in some one else’s car and you’ll still get the review. The silliest app O have used . All State also expects the driver to stay on the app for several months before getting the discount. That my airs no sense at all. ### 2/5 — Drive sense app is horrible *2024-03-29, version 1.13.2* I have been using this app for years and lately I noticed it doesn’t track all rides and when it does track it is not accurate. It also takes days to weeks to update the ride . I have 33 rides that are still not logged. This app is horrible. More of a headache than what it’s worth for the extra discount! ### 1/5 — Moderate braking penalty too strict *2023-12-02, version 1.13.2* The negative impact to your score for moderately fast braking (about half as fast as the car will brake) makes it pointless to even try. You are penalized significantly even for a small number of occurrences. If the app gives you a certain number of free faster slow downs or makes the penalty less it might be reasonable. As it is now, the app encourages bad driving such as slowing down too early before entering a ramp/turn lane to obtain the highest discount. ### 2/5 — Stopped tracking and relating to esurance. *2023-08-12, version 1.13.2* The first few years this tracked well and I had a good discount. Now, for the last year and a half it stopped sending the info to esurance and I only receive the minimal discount despite driving perfectly and during the safest hours. If you drop your phone or anything it dings you for hard braking and they find any reason to deduct any type of savings. ### 1/5 — DO NOT DOWNLOAD!!! *2023-05-01, version 1.13.2* The developer of this app has designed it to increase your rates. They do not have the most up to date statistics on vehicle stopping power. They are using data from older cars to jack up your rates. They also have old maps that do not have new speed limits posted. There is a 6 lane highway here that used to be an old 2 lane street. The posted speed limit is 60 but their app says it's 40, so you get an increase on your rate. I've sent emails to the NTSB, Federal Trade Commission, and Securities and Exchange Commission. Every one else should do the same. Esurance/All-State operates over state lines so they have to abide by all laws. Is there ant attorneys who are willing to bring a class action lawsuit against this company? ### 2/5 — Inconsistent from the start *2023-04-19* So I got this app to go along with my insurance like everyone else that has it. Now that it’s been in use for 2 years in my household all I can say is that it is hit or miss. At the beginning I had issues with it tracking at all, but the app kind of just started working properly? Fine whatever makes it work, right? Well the other issue that is huge that seems to be a common occurrence is when it records specific events within a trip. I, like many other people, frequently drive highways/freeways to get to work and home. The app quite literally gets confused sometimes when I pass by and exit and don’t take it and it gives me an extreme breaking event. The only thing I can think of is that the connection has problems with going under an overpass? Other than that it is pretty okay? But consistent problems that don’t appear to be fixed even after literal years of reviews saying the same issues show up is a pretty bad look on the company. ### 1/5 — Inaccurate ratings *2023-04-14, version 1.13.2* I drive short trips every day. I teach at a school only four minutes away from my home. So I don’t have a long drive daily. And other driving isn’t too long. So it irritates me that everyday it rates one or more of my trips as distracted driving. EVERYDAY! I don’t ever have my phone in my hand or with me while driving. EVER! I don’t need it. So I am not distracted. It is extremely frustrating to keep having it show that I am using my phone while driving. ### 1/5 — Battery Hog / Buggy *2023-01-05, version 1.13.2* I drove for about 40 minutes yesterday, and the app used more than 10% of my battery. On a recent long road trip, it ran my battery down to 0 after about 4 hours, so I ended up turning the app off. I also use Open Road, as the DriveSense app doesn’t detect accidents and Open Road does, and it used less than 5% of my battery yesterday. In addition, the app keeps telling me it isn’t recording data, but it appears to me that it is. Finally, it also records distracted driving when I pay with my phone at a drive through. Not sure how I good I feel about relying on this app to determine my discount. ### 1/5 — Very inaccurate *2023-01-03, version 1.13.2* It will say "distracted driving" or something and dock my discount rates when I haven't touched my phone the entire drive and in the trip summary it will have a 0 next to distracted driving. Fix it 🤬 ### 1/5 — Bring back Standby mode!!! *2025-07-25, version 1.13.6* Update: After writing my original review in June of 2024, standby mode is still not back. It is almost August 2025. It has totally been an inconvenience. I have been on vacation and have CONSTANTLY had to log passenger trips from Uber/Lyft rides. When previously I could just put it in standby mode and not worry. As others have mentioned, standby mode was removed. Now every time I ride in someone else’s vehicle, I have to mark I was passenger when I could have just put it in standby. On top of that, it takes sometimes multiple days for a trip to be logged before you can even mark you were passenger. It’s getting to be more and more inconvenient. This records all my time and a company truck and I’m not going to spend 15 or 20 minutes a day deleting trips in a company vehicle. They need to make away that you can stop it from recording trips during certain times of day for each day. They used to have it where you could put it in standby mode for 12 hours, but they’ve even done away with that. DriveSense gives my wife and I different trip results when we are traveling in the same car (one of us gets a great/good trip and the other gets an extreme braking. This morning an extreme breaking notification just appeared after the trip had already registered as normal; caveat, the trip was a plane ride while my phone was on airplane mode. I do not trust this app, it has consistently given me incorrect information. But since they removed standby mode and haven’t brought it back it’s been SO annoying. When I’m on vacation and using public transport, uber, or rides from friends you have to manually delete every. single. trip. so that it won’t count against you. Constantly shows pop-ups that there’s no Internet connection and I can’t send data but as soon as you open the app, it’s fine. Two weeks ago, I went snowboarding and had multiple notifications that I was driving too fast and had hard breaking. You have options to delete the trips, but you can’t simply click that you were a passenger or it’s inaccurate. You’d if I’m going down a mountain where there aren’t roads that it wouldn’t trigger a trip. They took away my option to pause when I’m a passenger with a friend or a bus or a Uber. Just a poor app you tolerate for a discount. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Great App *2022-04-30, version 1.13.2* I don’t know how people have had issues with this app. My experience has been nothing but good, some people just aren’t good drivers and want to blame the app for basically telling them the truth. Nothing but good experiences from my end ### 4/5 — Bad and unfair *2018-07-10* App could be so much more. If you forget to turn off the tracking and you get in a car with someone else, and they speed or brake hard, you’ll get dinged for it. If you go back in and try to remove it, it’ll disappear from the DriveSense app but will always be on the main Esurance app as “Drives Logged”, which still hurts you and your discount. So unless you remember each and every time to turn it off, you’ll get penalized. I also drive early in the morning and late at night for work, which again gets dinged for being bad. If I choose to remove it as “Driving for work” it will stay on as a bad drive regardless. Coming from State Farm, they actually use a Bluetooth G-force sensor and can detect your cornering, braking, speeding, and time of day so much better. I think Esurance could follow in their footsteps. A grading system (A/B/C/D) is much more friendly than a Good/Bad scenario, and is something Esurance should utilize before they drive all of their customers away with this terrible DriveSense experience. ### 4/5 — Updated review!!! Constantly crashing! *2018-04-23* Update: so it’s been a month and as the developer promised they updated the app. It has worked smoothly since the update and registered all my driving accurately. Now to wait for the discount and see if the constant data usage is worth it. Thanks! Sounds funny that an insurance app would constantly crash but that’s the case. I’ve downloaded it, activated it, and driven only to have it never read my drive. All setting needed were on. After a second drive, I check the app and it would just close before letting me even see if it registered the drive. Deleted app, re-downloaded to have newer version, NOPE, still crashes upon opening. I guess they feel that after the headaches of dealing with the app, we, the customer, will just give up on seeking the promised discount. Please fix. Below are my suggestions for the developer: - quick button or Siri function to switch when using company vehicle, bus, bicycle, or passenger, or pause. - notification to ask you if you are on a bus/train/boat/bicycle - geofencing to know when you are at home/work so it doesn’t waste battery life - Apple Watch app with option to get notifications and quickly change settings between ride type or pause. - widget on Home Screen with quick access buttons to change ride type or pause. ### 3/5 — “Distracted driving” *2022-12-19, version 1.13.2* I always have my phone connected to my car for apple CarPlay. It almost always say I was distracted. When I drive, I use the speak to text feature in my car rather than picking up my phone and typing. It’s really neat and easy to use. Where my problems lie is in its discount calculation. I work 3rd shift so I’m basically nocturnal and this app isn’t kind about that. I understand that this doesn’t make the roads safer but a girls gotta work. Another problem I’m having is I live in a very busy suburb. I get docked for fast breaking if someone slams the breaks in front of me. I follow with a good distance between the next car and i but if someone stops suddenly I’m penalized for not slowing down slow enough....aka not wrecking into the car in front of me. ### 3/5 — Okay *2019-06-14, version 1.5.2* Sometimes, it picks up hard braking that didn’t occur (i.e. your phone falls onto the floor while driving). This has only happened to me a few times, and you can usually delete mistakes. Make sure you disable it while another person is driving, especially if they drive recklessly. It will also pick up things like bike rides. More concerning, it takes off points for driving during the day. If you drive during commuter hours, like most people do, it will count against your discount. Customer service tells you that DriveSense only tracks late night driving, but that’s not true based on my experience. I’ve actually lost some of my discount due to otherwise safe daytime driving. I also find it really annoying that it notifies me about how often I drive, how long I should drive for, etc. For example, it will advise against doing errands during the week, which is a bit preachy, nannying, and irritating. I was just trying to take a nice bike ride during rush hour, jeeze. I don’t see how you could possibly score a 30% discount, as I couldn’t possibly drive more safely. If I can’t keep my initial 10% discount, I’m out. It’s really weird to know that your insurance company can data farm your driving habits. ### 3/5 — Be wary *2019-04-20, version 1.4.9* Overall I believe I am a safe driver. 32 and often with kids. I’ve used this app for almost a year and recently traded in my truck for a Jeep. I had a discount prior due to “great driving” as the app said. Now I get dinged for WAYY too many hard braking events. I drove on a 60mph 2 lane highway the other day for 39 miles each way and had over 15 yellow and red hard braking events each way. 10mph in 1 second is a bit I’ll-Defined as a hard braking event and 7-10mph is going to happen often. I can’t control that but it’ll sure take away discounts. The app considers me a high risk driver now. The highway has stop lights believe it or not and when the light turns yellow, slowing down from 60mph to zero at their “green” level would take me 12 seconds, which is road distance I don’t have.
