## What is Drop2?

Drop2: Jazz Guitar Ear Trainer — your complete practice coach

Drop2 listens to your playing through the microphone and gives you instant, note-by-note feedback — no cables, no interface, just your guitar and your phone. It even hears you over its own backing band: play along over the speaker, no headphones required. Six focused trainers take you from "where is that note?" to soloing over the changes, and a smart scheduler points your practice at what you haven't nailed yet. Or put the guitar down and train your ear alone.

Works with acoustic and electric guitar. All listening happens on-device — your playing never leaves your phone. Designed for iPhone and iPad.

FRETBOARD TRAINER
Hear a note, then find and play it anywhere on the neck. Start with naturals, add sharps and flats, then the whole fretboard. Spaced repetition drills the positions you keep missing, and a coverage dashboard tracks every one.

SCALES & ARPEGGIOS
Play the one-octave scale or arpeggio for any root and chord quality — m7, 7, maj7, m7b5, dim7, mMaj7 — and have each note checked by ear. A full-neck map colors the chord tones and degrees so you see the shape as you learn it. A built-in curriculum opens new keys and qualities as you master the basics.

LINES — SOLO OVER THE CHANGES
A walking bass and drums loop a progression or standard form — ii–V, the blues, the bird blues, rhythm changes, the Coltrane cycle, Take the A Train, So What, Blue Bossa, Autumn Leaves, All the Things You Are, and more — while you improvise. In Targets mode the app prescribes the guide tone to land each bar and grades your voice-leading. In Free mode every note is classified live — chord tone, tension, avoid note, or outside — on a color-coded "good-note" neck map. Score with wired headphones, or over the speaker: an on-device model picks your guitar out of the band.

DROP-2 VOICINGS
Learn and drill the essential jazz chord voicings across roots, qualities, inversions, and string sets. Browse any shape, hear it strummed, read its intervals — then quiz yourself: the app names a chord, you play it, and all four notes are scored. Answer note by note or strum the whole shape — strums are checked octave by octave, so it tells inversions apart. Includes ii–V progressions and a daily spaced-repetition review.

PLAY-ALONG BAND
Comp the changes in time with a looping rhythm section, your voicings scored as you strum.

EAR TRAINER
No guitar, no mic — pure listening. Drop2 plays an interval, a chord or a cadence, and you answer on the neck: intervals as degree-labelled circles on a fretboard pad, chords as real drop-2 voicings in any inversion, and cadences — ii–V–I, minor ii–V–i, ii–V and more — as voice-led shapes that step across the neck as they sound. Hold any answer to hear it before you commit. Review what's due with spaced repetition, and track it on a coverage grid.

TUNER & METRONOME
A chromatic tuner with a cent gauge and a fretboard view of the note you're on, plus a metronome with a real sampled drum-kit voice.

PROGRESS THAT KEEPS YOU GOING
Every session feeds a unified history: current and best streak, an activity heatmap, accuracy trends, recent sessions, and a "Today" plan for what to practice next. Your history syncs across devices with iCloud, with a JSON backup you control. A Home Screen and Lock Screen widget puts your streak and what's due one tap away, and an optional daily reminder stays quiet unless something really is due.

FREE & PREMIUM
Free: the Fretboard trainer, Drop-2 Learn & Train, the tuner and metronome, your streak, history and widget, and a taste of the ear trainer.
Premium unlocks the full coach: Scales & Arpeggios, the Lines soloing trainer, the Play-Along band, ear-trainer stats and review, your daily practice plan, and long-term accuracy charts.

Drop2 Premium is an auto-renewing subscription (monthly or annual) with a free trial. Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled; manage or cancel anytime in your App Store settings.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.3 — 2026-08-09

Version 2.3 — "Hear it, and come back"

THE EAR TRAINER, REBUILT
• Intervals are answered on the neck. A six-string fretboard pad names the lower note and lays every unlocked interval out as a degree-labelled circle — hold one to hear it before you commit, slide off to cancel.
• Chord questions now play a real drop-2 voicing in a random inversion. Answer by quality, and hold any row to hear that quality in the same key and see its shape on the neck.
• New: Cadences. ii–V–I, minor ii–V–i, ii–V, ii–V–I–VI and I–VI–ii–V, played as voice-led drop-2 shapes, with the neck stepping through the voicings in time with the audio.
• One selector — Intervals · Chords · Cadences · Stats — and spaced repetition per track.

COME BACK TOMORROW
• A streak widget for the Home Screen and Lock Screen: your streak, the last two weeks of practice, what's due in each trainer, and one tap into whatever needs you most.
• An optional daily reminder that stays quiet unless something is genuinely due or a streak is at risk.

NEW CHANGES TO PLAY OVER
• Three new forms for the Lines trainer and the Play-Along band: the bird blues (the bebop blues, with its chain of descending ii–Vs), the Coltrane cycle (three tonics a major third apart), and a standalone minor ii–V–i — the cadence Minor Blues, Blue Bossa and Autumn Leaves all turn on, and the one the new Cadences track teaches.

EVERYWHERE ELSE
• Every trainer now carries the same status line — items due, items mastered, current stage. Tap it to start a review.
• The Fretboard trainer gained a real review mode that drills exactly the notes that are due.

### 2.2 — 2026-08-09

Jazz Guitar is now Drop2 — new name, new icon, new launch animation, same coach. And 2.2 is our biggest update yet:

PRACTICE WITHOUT HEADPHONES
The band plays out of your speaker, you play over it — and Drop2 still hears you. An on-device model picks your guitar out of the mix and credits every note it catches, in the Lines soloing trainer, the Play-Along band, and Drop-2 strum practice. Wired headphones still work exactly as before.

SEVEN NEW STANDARD FORMS
Solo and comp over the complete 32-bar I Got Rhythm and Honeysuckle Rose (full AABA), plus Take the A Train, So What, Blue Bossa, Autumn Leaves, and All the Things You Are — in any key, unlocking as your curriculum grows.

SMARTER STRUM SCORING
Drop-2 Train's "Strum Chord" now verifies the exact voicing, octave by octave — it can tell inversions apart from a single strum.

ALSO IN 2.2
- Clear "heard → scored" feedback when scoring over the speaker, so you always know what the mic picked up
- In-app guides: short reads on drop-2 voicings, guide tones, and practice planning
- Many audio-stability and scoring-accuracy fixes — headphone plug/unplug, interruptions, and mic-permission handling mid-session

### 2.1 — 2026-07-14

Jazz Guitar is now easier to find around the world, with new store listings in Japanese, UK English, and Latin American Spanish. No changes to the app itself — the next feature update is already in the works.

### 2.0 — 2026-06-18

This is the biggest update yet — Jazz Guitar is now a complete practice coach, not just a fretboard trainer.

NEW TRAINERS
• Scales & Arpeggios — play any scale or arpeggio and have every note checked by ear, with a full-neck degree map.
• Lines — solo over a real backing band of walking bass and drums, with live feedback on every note you choose.
• Ear Trainer — name the intervals and chords you hear, no guitar needed.

NEW BAND & TOOLS
• Play-Along — comp the changes in time with a looping rhythm section.
• Metronome with a sampled drum-kit voice.

SMARTER PRACTICE
• Spaced repetition targets your weak spots automatically.
• A progressive curriculum unlocks new keys, chords, and forms as you master the basics.
• A new Progress tab with streaks, an activity heatmap, accuracy trends, and a daily "what to practice" plan.
• iCloud sync keeps your history across devices, with a backup you control.

Plus a redesigned look, a first-run walkthrough, and dozens of refinements throughout.

Thanks for playing — we'd love your feedback and a review.

### 1.1 — 2026-05-12

Redesigned from the ground up with a fresh new look. This update brings a native iPad experience, a built-in chromatic tuner, and smarter practice sessions — the fretboard trainer now prioritizes notes you haven't mastered yet, so every session counts.
