## What is Drum Gym with Mike Sturgis?

Drum Gym is an app that provides you with the tools you need to be creative and musical in your drumming. 
 
It achieves this goal in three progressive stages:
 
First, you will cover a comprehensive overview of all the essential snare drum rudiments and their various components. 
 
Next, the rudimental vocabulary is combined into exercises that are more complex and challenging. These exercises cover a range of rudimental combinations across different subdivisions and are designed to further your technical and musical approach. 
 
Finally, we take some of the rudiments that we’ve covered and apply them to the drum kit in a variety of patterns and fills.  These ideas will allow you to take the skills you’ve acquired through learning the rudiments and create a dynamic musical vocabulary.
 
Drum Gym provides you with some innovative and interactive options on how to approach your learning. 
 
Each exercise starts with an explanation of the content, with the important points of each exercise written out for your convenience. 
 
Next, there is a demonstration of the exercise at a fast and a slow tempo that simultaneously features scrolling notation. 
 
After that, you can move into the practice section of the exercise and play along with the audio loop and click track at any tempo that feels comfortable. You can adjust your mix between loop and click, and also mute the individual voices of the kit for increased flexibility in how you hear and practice each exercise. 
 
In addition to scrolling notation, the practice section in each exercise features a bespoke graphic that clearly indicates which drum or cymbal is being struck and which hand should be doing the striking.
 
Because of the progressive nature of its content, Drum Gym is suitable for the beginner who is learning the rudiments for the first time or the intermediate to advanced player who is looking to refine and enhance their knowledge of the rudiments and explore their application to the drum kit. I’m a somewhat new drummer and was looking for an app to help with practicing rudiments…. This is the app you need. It has a great video intro to each rudiment along with a loopable follow along notation and metronome. Seriously, best purchase for my practice regime.

This is perfect. As a beginner, this kind of clear and easy to follow guide to rudiments and paradiddles is invaluable. Love the play along tempo graphic as it really helps to get a rhythm going. I have now made this part of my daily practice routine as I slowly move through the different disciplines gaining speed at my own pace. 
Not being funny but you can’t buy a second hand pair of drums sticks for £2.49 so to get this kind of quality tuition and practice material for that is a bargain. 
I can only agree with the other reviewer and look forward to Drum Gym 2

What an amazing resource for a beginner drummer.  He doesna great job of going over each rudiment, but I especially like that you get to practice with an onscreen guide and can set the tempo you want to practice at.

Excellent drum practice app.  Honestly it’s probably the best drum app available for practices.  Every lesson is important as well as presented in a meaningful thoughtful way.

If you’re learning drums this is essential.  Even if you’re a veteran this is still useful.

I love the app. The best part for me is that you can put the rudiments on a loop and practice them over and over. Mike Sturgis is great on this as well. 

A couple small fixes are needed: For me I’m not able to save favorites, once I close the app and come back they’re gone. Second the flamacue is missing the intro, which is a bummer because that’s a particularly tricky rudiment for me. Thanks!

I use this on an iPad and really enjoy using it. Mr. Sturgis explains and demonstrates the rudiments on a pad, and then at fast and slow speed on a snare. The notation is below so you can see what he's playing. Then the practice screen lets you set your own tempo and practice along. Having played for 48 years, and never been really good at the rudiments, this is helping me catch up on what I should have done many years ago. Great stuff

This is by far the best drum tuition app I have (and I have most of them). There is enough to give beginner drummers a nudge in the right direction and plenty to keep more advanced drummers busy on the kit for years. 

The tuition videos are very detailed and tell you everything you need to know to get started. One bugbear is the the tuition video plays each time you select a new excercise, which can be a bit annoying. 

Overall though, easily a 5 star app. If you're looking for something new to learn/ practice on the drums you won't be disappointed here. It's a serious attempt at a comprehensive drum tuition app with masses of content you won't find anywhere else. 

I hope there will more from Mike in the future - maybe a Drum Gym 2?

This is absolutely the best app I could find on rudiments. Each rudiment has a how to video in slow and regular speeds. To top it off it includes a metronome for practice and more videos on how to apply the rudiments on the set. I'm grateful this app was created! 100% 5 Stars!!!!
