Just a book reading app. I’ve been struggling with learning Chinese on and off for about ten years or more. Sadly I had not made much progress beyond 500 words. But a few years ago I started learning some written characters instead of just pinyin at my Chinese tutors instruction. I picked up about 100 immediately and then started seeing some improvements. Those dumb apps where you just get a tiny slice of a phrase or something at a time doesn’t prepare you like this. Honestly this has been the best app that has helped me get to the next level. This app is literally the reason I can read as much as I can, and also the reason I can read traditional characters. I really love how the stories go all the way into advanced levels. I love that I started using this app when I was at HSK1(2.0), and it’s still useful to me at HSK4. And it looks like it’s gonna be able to carry me all the way until I’m ready to handle novels for native speakers. It’s so helpful, and full of high-quality content, and the stories are genuinely engaging. The writing style of the stories is the reason the app works for me as well as it does. When I’m bored and want to open my phone, I have mostly replaced doom scrolling with just reading stories on here for a minute. It’s brought my reading up, but also helped a lot with my listening and speech. It’s very obvious that some of the other Chinese language apps copied some of the features from this app to create their own—but not nearly as impressive or useful. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Good but too limited *2026-07-19, version 3.5.0* The monthly subscription is way too expensive and the free version is way too limited. I like this app but def not enough to pay for it. Then asked me to login, I logged in, then it tells me to verify my email and says it’s sending me an email, but email never comes. Can’t login. So deleting this app and unsubscribing. Too bad. ### 1/5 — Great idea, poor execution. *2025-10-06, version 3.0.4* I would pay for the subscription if there was interesting material; for example, a content licensing partnership with actual Chinese news and media publishers. Instead, all of the content is meaningless imagined scenarios; i.e., “Annie goes to the grocery store,” “I am a cat,” etc. Even if I try, I can’t force myself to be interested in reading it. I recently idled onto it, liked it, then paid for a new one month subscription, but it still won’t let me access premium content. I tried other ways of contacting the app people to complain about it, but all the email options it lists I either don’t have or they’re locking me out of my email for reasons I don’t really understand and simply don’t have time to waste following up onright now. So my only option is one-star review, sorry. Also there is an audio example of the story so you can listen to their pronunciation to make sure yours is accurate. Also there is an English translation of each sentence if you are not sure of the meaning, you can check. I paid for the yearly payment of this app and it can cost around $100 but it is very worth it. This is much better than Duolingo, I actually learn a lot with this app, and practice multiple times a week. The stories are interesting and have a diverse selection available. I also use HelloTalk app to practice chatting and talking in Chinese with native speakers.
