## What is Duane?

Texas has more historical markers than any other state. More than 16,000 of them, across all 254 counties, each one telling you what happened right where you're standing. Most folks drive right past.

Duane reads them to you.

Start Drive Mode and he keeps an eye on the road ahead. When a marker is coming up, he tells you its story out loud. No tapping, no pulling over, eyes on the road.

He's named after my grandfather. He loved back roads and never could pass a marker without stopping to read it. That's pretty much the whole idea.

Every marker is in Duane's own voice now, more than 15,000 of them, recorded with the kind of easy, unhurried delivery the good ones deserve.

You can hear it two ways. Classic Texas is the marker's own words, read straight, and it's free for everyone. Tall Tale is those same facts told the way your granddad might have told them, and there are more than 13,000 of those. The facts don't change. Only the delivery does.

And you decide how much Duane talks. Highlights keeps it to the best stories, the ones worth slowing down for. Balanced is a good mix. Everything means he leaves nothing out, all of Texas history, marker by marker.

Trails turn a free afternoon into a plan. There are 491 of them: a dozen stops across a county, a walk around a town square, or a theme like the Texas Revolution or the Civil War on the coast. Start one and Duane tells each stop as you reach it, while your maps app handles the turns.

There's more to explore when you're parked.

Sleep Mode is the bedtime stories of Texas. Set a timer, turn out the light, and Duane tells Texas tales in his own voice until you drift off. Keep an hour of them on your phone for a campsite with no signal.

On This Day pulls up a marker tied to today's date, fresh every morning.

Explore lets you wander the whole map, search a town or county, or filter by what you're after. Civil War. Outlaws and lawmen. Ghost towns. The oil boom. Strange but true.

And it keeps track of what you've heard, lets you save the ones worth a second visit, and hands you a badge here and there.

It's built for the road. The whole marker collection lives on your phone, so it works with no signal at all. Duane uses your location only while the app is open or Drive Mode is on, and it stays on your phone. No account to make. No ads. Nobody tracking you.

The marker text comes straight from the Texas Historical Commission, so the facts are always the marker's own. Classic Texas, in Duane's voice, is free for good. Tall Tale Mode, his retellings, is a one-time purchase you can try free for 10 days.

Climb in. Texas has been waiting to tell you something.

### 5/5 — Favorite new app

*2026-09-25*

Duane is the man! This is such a great app and I highly encourage everyone to download it who has an interest in Texas history or all of those roadside markers that we always drive by on road trips but where our wives never let us stop and read them. But it’s better than just reading the signs because Duane adds color and interesting facts along with the historical marker information. I love that I can just open it up and it can cruise with me on a road trip so our family can learn about Texas history and interesting places that we’re passing while driving.

*2026-08-23*

My brother turned me on to this app. I have been waiting for this app forever! I would love to stop and read every historical marker but I needed to get to where I need to go. This app doesn’t just read the marker. It expands the story of the marker. Well done!

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.2 — 2026-09-30

Big one, y'all.

Duane reads every marker himself now. Classic Texas, the marker's own words, is in his voice on more than 15,000 markers, and it's free for everyone. Your phone's voice only fills in when there's no signal.

Tall Tale Mode nearly doubles. More than 13,000 markers now have Duane's campfire retelling, including thousands more in the Everything setting.

A few smaller things:
- Navigate opens Google Maps by default (Apple Maps if you don't have it). Change it anytime in Tune.
- Your music pauses while Duane talks, then picks right back up. Rather have it turned down? Flip it in Tune.
- Fixed missing accents in dozens of marker names, like La Sociedad Mutualista Cuauhtémoc.
- More markers sorted into themes in Explore.

Every one of these stories has its own page on heyduane.com too.

### 1.1 — 2026-09-25

Trails are here. Pick a county drive, a walk around a town square, or a theme like the Texas Revolution, and Duane tells every stop as you reach it. Your maps app handles the turns.

Also new:
- Up Ahead shows the next stories coming up the road.
- Walk and Bike pace, for a town square on foot or a backroad on two wheels.
- Navigate opens a marker in Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze.
- Sleep Mode can keep an hour of stories on your phone for nights with no signal.
- Explore's filter matches Drive Mode: Highlights, Balanced or Everything.
- Lock screen and steering wheel controls, and a pile of fixes for the drive.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-09-24

Audio fixes for the road:
- A phone call or a paused music app no longer leaves Duane silent for the rest of the drive.
- Stories play reliably with "Pause music during stories" on, even when Duane is in the background.
- If your car or Bluetooth audio disconnects mid-story, Duane waits for it to come back instead of playing through the phone speaker.
- Better Send Diagnostics reports.

### 1.0 — 2026-08-20

No release notes.
