## What is DuckCast?

DuckCast reads the weather that moves ducks, then checks it against the radar.

Ninety hunting regions across ten states, each scored 0 to 10 for mallards, pintails, gadwall, wigeon, green-winged teal, and snow geese. Nine each in North Dakota, Arkansas, Missouri, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas, from the Souris basin down to the Texas coast. Every score shows its work.

RADAR CHECK
The forecast predicts. Radar measures the birds.

DuckCast decodes raw NEXRAD Level II radar volumes and reads what was actually in the air over your region after sunset last night. It measures how much bird mass lifted off, which way it tracked, and how fast it flew under its own power once the wind aloft is removed. Bugs drift with the wind. Birds fly through it. That difference is how the app tells them apart.

Thirty-five radar sites cover them, from Minot down to Corpus Christi.

One limit, stated plainly: radar sees every bird in the air, not just ducks. Read it as proof that a migration happened, not as a duck count.

THE SCORE, AND WHY
Eight factors, each visible and arguing for or against:
Cold front and temperature trend
Wind direction and speed
Freeze north of you
Snow advance upstream
Local open water and holding
Season timing
Crop harvest and field feed
What other hunters are reporting

You can disagree with the number because you can see how it was built. Every region opens to a full breakdown and a 14 day outlook.

UPSTREAM WATCH
Ducks arrive from somewhere. DuckCast watches the ground they are leaving. Southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba above North Dakota. The mid-Mississippi valley above Arkansas. Iowa and Illinois above Missouri. Arkansas and west Tennessee above Mississippi. For South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas, the state directly north, which DuckCast already scores. Fifty-six upstream stations in all. When shallow water starts locking up north of you, you see it before the birds show up.

TOMORROW'S HUNT
Legal light, sunrise, sunset, moon phase, hour by hour wind and temperature, and a decoy score that tells you whether the sky will work your spread or blow it out.

LIVE MIGRATION MAP
Every state drawn from real county boundaries, colored by score, with an animated tracer running the real forecast wind field. Tap any region to open. An All States map puts the whole network on one screen, freeze line included.

TRIP PLANNER
Pick a window, pick your species, get a day by day outlook and the strongest stretch inside it.

HUNT LOG
Log what you shot and where. DuckCast finds your pattern over the season.

HUNTER REPORTS
Region-level reports from other hunters, feeding into the score. DuckCast never asks for your spot and never stores coordinates. Your honey hole is nobody's business.

WATCH YOUR REGIONS
Save the regions you hunt and DuckCast watches them.

HOME SCREEN WIDGET
The top regions and their scores, without opening the app.

SHARE CARDS
Send a region's score to your hunting party as an image.

BUILT FOR 4:30 AM
Three display modes. Field is the standard dark look. Blind turns the app amber on black, so a look in the dark does not cost your night vision. Daylight is high contrast for sun off snow.

It opens on your last good read when you have no bars.

WHAT THIS IS NOT
Not a bird count. Not a guarantee. Not a substitute for scouting.

DUCKCAST PRO
Live radar, the freeze line, live crop harvest, and hunter reports. $19.99 per month or $159.99 per year, auto-renewing until you cancel in Settings. The map, region detail and season timing stay free.

Season dates, limits, and legal shooting hours change every year. Verify with your state wildlife agency before you hunt.

Weather by Open-Meteo. Radar from NOAA NEXRAD. Crop progress from USDA NASS. Not endorsed by any of them.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.9 — 2026-09-21

The score now shows its work.

A duck score answers two questions at once: how good is the morning, and are
the birds here yet. When the answer is "great morning, wrong bird", you used to
see one low number and no way to tell which half was the problem.

Now a held score shows both. Conditions, which is the same for every duck on
that water, and how much of your species the season says is there. South Delta
on a January front reads 9.0 conditions against 0.2 blue-winged teal, and the
mallard sitting next to it reads 8.8.

Same forecast underneath. It just stopped hiding the good half.

### 1.8 — 2026-09-19

A Season Pass, because three or four months is how long the season is.

Monthly is a meter running for something with an end date, and a year is a lot
to commit for a few weeks of scouting. The Season Pass is three months at
$49.99, which works out cheaper per month than paying monthly.

Same Pro as always: live radar, the freeze line, every push alert, hunter
reports across all 90 regions, and the live crop survey.

Also fixed: some phones that had turned alerts on were never actually
reachable, so they would have sat silent through a front. They repair
themselves the next time the app opens. Nothing to do.

### 1.7 — 2026-09-18

Two fixes, both found in the live app rather than by any test.

The Reports tab did not reload when you changed state. It kept whichever
state's list it had loaded first, so a state with a report could show "no
reports yet" until you pulled to refresh. If you subscribe to read what other
hunters are seeing, that is the feature not working.

The All States map can now switch species from inside the view. It has always
coloured by species; the only picker lived on the state map, so comparing the
flyway for gadwall meant backing out and coming in again.

### 1.6 — 2026-09-17

Fixes, all of the things hunters actually ran into.

Logging a hunt now names the state you are logging in, and will not let a
morning be filed against another state's region. The region row could come up
blank and save a Louisiana hunt as North Dakota, with the score fetched for the
wrong marsh.

Posting a hunt to a group reported an error even when the hunt went through. It
went through every time; the app misread the reply.

A group that no longer exists now says so, and can be removed, instead of
sitting in the list behind an error code with no way out.

Regional intel no longer turns a single report into a percentage. One hunter
seeing new birds is a count, not a consensus.

Alerts about one region arrive as one notification instead of one for every
species scored there.

### 1.5 — 2026-09-16

Blue-winged teal are now forecast.

They are the one duck the app had nothing to say about. Blue-wings move on
early September fronts and are mostly gone before the regular seasons open, so
a model built around the freeze line pushing birds south in November was
always going to miss them.

They get their own scoring now. Cold fronts and the wind behind them carry
most of the weight, because that is what actually moves this bird. Freeze and
snow upstream carry almost none, because blue-wings leave before either
happens.

Season timing is per state, built from federal harvest data: Texas and
Louisiana peak in late September, the Dakotas empty out in the first week, and
Mississippi barely sees them at all.

You can log blue-wings in the hunt log and post them to your club. Both teal
now say GW and BW, because "teal" stopped being a useful word once there were
two of them.
