This app is nothing but an advertisement for various expensive pay-for add-ons, but looking at what is shown, I can’t see that the pay-for version would be worth it. And it get REALLY expensive if you want a meaningful collection of add-ons. You are better off with the website services. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!! ### 1/5 — Only a 20% Rabat Available, not the 30% claimed *2019-01-20* Duden is claiming to offer a 30% discount this week but… the in-app store actually only offers 20% off. What gives? ### 1/5 — For Profit *2017-03-20* Now you need to buy a bundle of $149 to get Duden Universal, which is the most useful in the set. If you want to purchase the Universal, it says "no connection"... ### 1/5 — Purchase one and it will soon be discontinued *2015-10-13* I bought the full Duden (main) dictionary in the previous edition at this high price, and it no longer works. It's been replaced by this current edition, which I would have to buy again. This seems contrary to Apple rules and is pretty maddening. If you buy this edition you will soon have to buy the next one again. Why doesn't Apple defend its policy that app purchases carry the right to subsequent updates? The American Heritage English dictionary has played the same trick, and in that case neither the old nor the new edition works at all. ### 1/5 — 3rd time and you're out *2015-09-10* The Duden Universal (just German, not a German-English) Dictionary is the one I prefer to use. I orginally bought it in paper in Austria; that was about $29.99. Then it came out as an app. Super. It bought that. $29.99. But that app stopped working after a little while. Instead, Duden came out with another app. That was another $29.99. I tried to console myself with the idea that it might be a "new edition," but I can't say that it was, and, anyway, why shouldn't the vocabulary be continually updated? Now that new app has stopped working - completely on my iPod touch and partially on my iPads - and I've discovered that there is now another new app. Does it recognize the presence of the earlier app? No. You have to buy the dictionary yet again (in-app) - and this time it is indeed exactly the same editon. Yet another $29.99. No, thank you. I won't buy Duden products anymore - Duden is just too abusive. There is also a Duden program for OS X - yet another $29.99. If you want Duden content, know that it is available for free online at duden.de. ### 1/5 — Crashes *2014-10-26, version 3.56.607* On IOS 8.1 iPhone 6 Plus crashes immediately on opening. ### 1/5 — Won't open *2014-08-19, version 3.56.282* On an iPhone 5S with latest OS and plenty of memory, this app crashes before it reaches the homescreen. And the stand alone apps have ceased to exist. Nowhere obvious can I find how to do this. This is german only. but unusable. update:not better still. not as duden.de ### 1/5 — Absolutely awful *2024-03-18, version 3.71.595* What is the point of this app?? ### 1/5 — Just use duden.de on the web *2023-10-28* This is divided into multiple different reference books, and seemingly none of them is as complete as the resources on the web, which is free. Eg, the “Bedeutungswöterbuch” lists six meanings for the verb “übertragen”; duden’s website has 8, and also an adjectival entry. The site has separate entries for “auswiegen” and “ausgewogen”; the dictionary in the app has neither. Perhaps one of the other dictionaries is more complete, but you can’t tell before you buy. This is german only. but unusable. ### 1/5 — They’ll take it away *2022-04-17* I buy Duden paper dictionaries, but I don’t trust them for apps, because I paid good money for a few of them some years ago, and after a while they were confiscated, so to speak. They were completely disabled. I don’t have to buy a new paper dictionary anytime the publisher wants to come out with a new version, and I shouldn’t have to do that with dictionary apps either. ### 1/5 — The most useless app I have ever seen *2021-03-16, version 3.71.595* This is just a storefront for a long list of expensive Duden apps. Also on Mac it’s available for free. ### 1/5 — Not useful for learning *2019-03-11, version 3.71.478* Maybe this is good for native speakers or higher-level learners, but it’s hard to recommend - you have to pay over a hundred pounds for the full featured version, and the layout of the screen is pretty bad. Ich habe letztens eine App runtergeladen die das selbe mit Englischen Vokabeln macht (heißt übrigens „Vocabulary“). I recommend it. Although it doesn’t cover many Redewendungen. ### 4/5 — The Gold Standard *2020-09-11, version 3.71.584* The gold standard in German lexicography. Not the greatest user interface. On the face of it, you would think that at least some of the different volumes could be combined to reduce the apparent complexity for the user. As I am interested in etymology, I find the Herkunftswörterbuch of particular value. ### 4/5 — Useful! *2019-03-16, version 3.71.478* DUDEN is THE reference in German Wörterbuchs. Unlike other comments, I find this app helpful. The linguists who write dictionaries need to get paid, and the online Duden has too many ads. Google Translate doesn’t cover etymology, synonyms or how to conjugate verbs. This app is a good start to identify what type of dictionary one needs (50 000 words in depth vs. 100 000 ‘connections’), and it also gives many ´freebies’. ### 4/5 — Not perfect yet, but good *2016-10-10* I find it good that developer has listened and solved some of the issues in the new update...BUT new bugs and inconveniences have appeared: 1. After the update of dictionaries to the latest version, the badge suggesting update for each dictionary appears again. It disappears only when I start the app offline. 2. The sounds in the Universal dictionary for most of the entries are gone (while in other dictionaries they have kept untouched - fingers crossed it it remains so - and the pronunciation menu is gone when the word is selected in this dictionary). 3. Please get back the possibility of looking the word up in the system dictionary! 4. Please enble your app to remember scrolling point of the entry, so that it does not jump to the top line when the app is switched back to in the multitasking mode or maximized again. ### 4/5 — Tolle app, aber funktioniert im Moment nicht... *2014-09-13* Ich liebe diese App und benutze sie regelmäßig. Auf dem iPhone funktioniert sie aber nicht mehr seit der letzten Aktualisierung -- sie stürzt nur noch ab. Auf dem iPad gibt's übrigens keine Probleme, nur auf dem iPhone. Danke! ### 3/5 — Katastrophale usability *2018-07-04* So gut der Duden auch ist, die App Entwicklung ist auf dem Stand einer Webseite aus den 90er Jahren. Es kommt endlich (!) mal ein neues Update im Juli 2018, und es unterstützt immer noch kein iPhone X. Viel schlimmer ist aber die Bedienung, hauptsächlich die Auswahl der einzelnen Wörterbücher. Man muss immer erst unten in der Mitte das kleine Icon „Katalog“ suchen, hat hier wiederum große - allerdings nicht klickbare - Icons der Wörterbücher, und muss dann auf ein kleines weißes Kästchen mit dünnem gelben Rahmen und dem kaum lesbaren gelben Begriff „starten“ klicken. Warum kann man nicht einfach die ganze Zeile klickbar machen, inkl. Icon, inkl. lesbarem schwarzen Namen des Wörterbuchs. Warum ist immer noch die 26. Auflage des Duden auswählbar und verwirrt mich, wenn ich längst die 27. gekauft habe und die alte nie wieder nutzen werde? Es ist eine absolute Frechheit eine der teuersten Apps überhaupt im Store anzubieten (deutlich mehr als 100$), und dann so etwas benutzerunfreundliches zu programmieren. Das können die meisten kostenlosen Apps um Welten besser! ### 3/5 — Mr. *2013-12-18* I used to have two Duden's dictionary apps on my iPhone, but ever since I reformatted my phone, only one of the two had been made available for redownloading. So I purchased a different dictionary app today and, since the Duden came out with this In-App-Kauf format, the layout of the apps themselves has significantly changed, as these apps can only be viewed mediated through this 'Folder App' which is required for the initial purchase and download. So this seemingly for shopping geared app is not only for downloading, but also for the actual dictionary itself, and if I wanted to change apps between the one located within this folder and 'das Stilwörterbuch', unnecessary complications arise, which I believe Duden could have avoided, if it had been mindful.
