### 4/5 — Great app but missing a few features

*2026-05-28*

I love the ease of this app, and overall think it is fantastic and feel very grateful to have this resource. I do wish that it would show which category any given herb or formula is in once you are in the entry, just as you can see the header telling you which section an herb is in when reading the material médica. I also wish that it would save your recent searches into your search history so you could easily reengage with what you were just looking at. Adding these two feature would make this app pretty much perfect. As it stands it is great, but it is a little tedious to use as a study tool because of the lack of those features.

### 4/5 — Missing bookmarks, highlighting, etc tools

*2023-01-06*

The app content is great. For the price paid it would be very helpful if the developer would add some tools to save favorites herbs, formula, options to write note and comments, highlight or look up the definition. This will make it very helpful.

### 5/5 — Worth every penny

*2022-09-21*

Even if you have the actual books, this app is such an invaluable tool to have. I use it daily. So much faster at looking things up quickly and efficiently for fast reference, but I do love highlighting in my paper books as well. I highly recommended this app to ALL herbal medicine students and practitioners alike. I was hesitant to spend the money at first since I do have the book, but I now have zero regrets. It is a much have for sure!

### 5/5 — Just like the book but.....

*2022-06-08, version 4.5*

...It fits in my pocket! Great info. Easy to access. Used it as a student and in practice. Love this app.

### 5/5 — Very handy

*2022-05-24, version 4.5*

I use this basically every day

### 5/5 — Excellent reference

*2022-03-15, version 4.5*

This app has been an excellent reference and is now my go to in the clinic. Move over Formulas & Strategies and Materia Medica, I’ve got something better!

### 5/5 — Very useful

*2022-03-14*

I highly recommend this book to my students and Acupuncturists and herbalist. Best Reference during practice and also help for learning formula and strategy. I use this book to create Question for NCCAOM herbalololgy exams!

### 4/5 — Missing important features

*2022-01-27*

I purchased this app about 4 months ago and I have to say this is a very handy app with excellent customer service. This is actually the thick book in the palm of your hand. You can search by formula / herb or browse chapter by chapter. If you have a doubt on a herb in a formula you can just click on it and you'll be able to consult its monograph right away. What I would like to see is a search by author or by sources for instance search all formulas from the Treatise on the Cold Damage or formulas written by Zhang Zhong Jing. The app misses few important features such as increase font size, zoom in and out, access to dictionary, taking notes, bookmarks and or highlights... This is a textbook after all.

### 5/5 — Brilliant app for TCM herbalists to reference or just learn from.

*2021-12-23*

I have referred to the phone app more times than I can remember during zoom calls and consultations. It is straightforward to use and most of the TCM herbs in modern use are there 97% of the time. It is best when searching on one herb or formula at a time but seems to lack a back function that allows you to quickly revisit several unrelated herbs that were used to narrow a search. Anyone used to the print editions of Materia Medica and the Formulas volume will feel right at home. Combined with Chen and Chen it is a fantastic work and it is clear that Bensky et al made it a labour of love. Deserves 9 stars really. Well worth the price!

### 5/5 — Great

*2021-12-16*

This a wonderful option for the students and practitioners of Chinese medicine.
I would love if you can add a place for flash cards and notes as found in the kindle app

### 5/5 — Perfect!

*2021-11-14, version 4.4*

Ideal way to access 2 voluminous and essential books from your phone. Can’t live without it!

### 5/5 — Love love love this app!!!

*2021-03-17, version 4.3*

Replaces a 10 lbs book - so great !!!!!

Did I say how much I love it ?

I can pull it up on my iPad, iPhone, search for formulas and symptoms

Love!111

### 5/5 — Amazing Resource!

*2021-01-12, version 4.3*

I use this app almost every day and the search feature is outstanding!

### 4/5 — Please improve the app

*2020-11-14*

it does not have copy function nor does it allow you to bookmark, highlight texts, or add notes. No star to add herbs to favorite.

If you click on a herb or formula link the new page doesn’t tell you the category of the herb or formula.

What I do appreciate is the pinyin tones.

### 5/5 — Just Love this app! Except...

*2020-11-01*

There are many things I just love about this app. I love how easy it is to use. I love that I can have both my herbal and formula book right there at my fingertips at all times while I’m in the clinic and that it integrates both books so that I can quickly look up each herb in a formula if needed when customizing a formula. The thing that bothers me the most is the inability to highlight, underline or make notes. If this were a feature it would help greatly as there are times when I find interesting tidbits in the commentary but have to read the entire thing again to find out where it is.

### 5/5 — Best Herbs App Ever!

*2020-10-26, version 4.0*

Love this App! I literally use this for my herbs classes all the time. It makes learning fun & I love how well it’s created! Thank you so much for making this app for us! Highly recommend!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — $100+ to access any information

*2024-01-15, version 4.8*

Will never pay that much, all of this info is available for free online.

### 1/5 — so so annoying I have no words

*2022-11-07*

Not only this app has black and white pictures instead of normal color, which is so vitally important for Materia medica to recognise the herb, but YOU CANNOT WORK WITH THIS APP AT ALL! Only look, but if you are a student like me you will be in pain unable to copy any herb name for your notes or any piece of text you need. Utterly useless, cannot believe I paid nearly 100 dollars for each of their e-books which were total pain and useless to work with. Big mistake I purchased the app without checking first! Feel like sent my another £109.99 to the bin! Annoyed beyond! Will NEVER NEVER buy anything from this company again. All they care is their comfort, but dont care thats its the most useless, super uncomfortable thing to use and charging so expensive! I will request a refund or write a massive complain about such useless and expensive products! Extremely dissapointed! !!!

### 1/5 — Just okay

*2019-11-10, version 3.8*

I have had the app for a year and paid for complete access. I don’t have access to the advance search and some of the other things. $124 gone down the drain I might as well carry Bensky with me for all the good this app has done.

### 1/5 — Very bad app!!! Need quick fix

*2016-06-12*

I have bought the full view but for some reason I cannot view it!

### 1/5 — No benefit

*2016-05-26, version 201411150925*

It will not load, not even after resetting my phone, deleting and redownloading it, and after contacting Apple. A total waste of $20.

### 1/5 — Price point is terrible...

*2015-09-06, version 201411150925*

...especially since I have already spent upward of $300 dollars for the text books by Bensky! You need to offer this app as a freebie (or WAY less) for those of us who already own the text. Boo! To added expenses for current students of Chinese medicine!!!

### 1/5 — Upgrade phone and app doesn't reinstall

*2015-06-02, version 201411150925*

So basically I am a student and thought I would buy the 19$ version to study with and I recently upgraded by iphone and now I am downloading all my purchased apps and this one no longer recognize me and wants me to pay again for the app. Please fix.

### 2/5 — Loved the app, but now it won’t let me access

*2020-11-15, version 4.2*

I loved this app for the past 2.5 yrs, but now it will not let me access any of the content and says that I need to re-purchase? I would happily up the review to 5 starts when this gets rectified as I am not inclined to spend $125 for the app again!

### 3/5 — Wish I could write notes in the app

*2022-03-03, version 4.5*

Great resource. It’s missing functionality. It would be great to be able to make personal notes for single herbs and formulas.

### 3/5 — Good, but some suggestions

*2014-11-22, version 201411150925*

I agree with some of the points a previous reviewer had pointed out.
-no index
-no introduction or background info prior to category

Additional useful suggestions:
-the ability to flag most used formulas or herbs or favorites list for quick reference
-a search tab
-actual photographs/pictures of the dried herbs

Overall I think it's a nice app for reference, but a bit pricey. . .

*2024-12-13*

I love this app, follows Bensky knowledge. Easy to search, text is clear and well stated. If I can ask for imporvement: I wish that I can open 1-3 windows for easy comparison of formula or herbs. Also, I would love to have option of highlight the text for me important. Highly recommend!

### 5/5 — Review

*2024-08-25*

As an accupuncture student I find this app incredibly useful. In fact- sometimes I wish I hadn’t spent so much money on the accompanying books. The app pulls things up so quickly, I’d recommend for acupuncturists and students alike.

### 5/5 — Herbal medicine reference book

*2023-06-08*

One of the most complete reference and study guides on the market for Chinese/Holistic Herbal Medicine!
Explanations and commentaries are well written and easy to comprehend by students and practitioners alike. Correlation between classical and modern interpretations are also well thought through.
Job well done!

### 5/5 — Very handy and comprehensive

### 5/5 — Constant Resource

*2023-04-29, version 4.7*

Worth every penny and then some!

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2023-03-31, version 4.7*

Great for reference and well updated! Love the search engines

### 5/5 — Great Resource!

*2023-03-17*

I love this app and use it on a regular basis in my TCM studies. All aspects of this app are great, but if I had to nitpick: I wish I could see the category/subcategory of single herbs on their page. the only way I can see them, is in the TOC, or if I search the herb specifically. I'm currently in formulas I and when researching the ingredients, it would be helpful to click the hyperlink on the formula page and see the herbal category the single herb belongs to.
