I’m so glad I found this app. I am a very frequent traveler and also a recent relocation transplant. This means I'm new to my city and surrounding area. This app has been invaluable and helping me connect with local restaurants that I like and is especially useful when I travel giving me the full options that a city offers.

### 5/5 — Why search when you can download this app???!!!

*2024-07-07, version 6.15.0*

I truly appreciate that this app helps to locate Black Owned restaurants. The Black Community is marginalized enough and this helps to support culture, traditions, and innovations. Also, you don’t have to be Black to patronize any of these restaurants. Thank you.

### 5/5 — Dietary Resource

*2024-07-06, version 6.15.0*

Great app for locating tasty meals, foods & educating us about ingredients in recipes.

### 5/5 — I ACTUALLY USE THIS APP.

*2024-07-06, version 6.15.0*

This is not a review for review sake. I was in NYC for Juneteenth, in Times Square, looking for something to eat. An EatOkra ad flashed on a digital billboard and it reminded me that I have the app!

So I pulled it out and found a dope Caribbean spot a few (NYC) blocks away! I should also note, I was with my best friend and her boyfriend—who live in Harlem—and they had ever heard of the spot we went to. Now they are semi-regular visitors to said spot! EatOkra made that possible.

### 5/5 — Feeling Connected and full!

*2024-07-06, version 6.15.0*

I love this app so much! The creators of this app took so much time and care to create something so special! Not just for people to use to support black owned businesses, but for the restaurants and business owners to be found! I had no idea about the restaurants in my city, and now I do! Thank you! Keep up the amazing work you’re doing 💜

### 5/5 — a MUST HAVE app ❤️🖤💚

*2024-07-06, version 6.15.0*

I am so thankful for this app! I never travel the states without using it. It makes feeding my family on the road easier.

After I set my hotel reservations I start looking for places to eat using this app. I have found Vegan, Seafood, Caribbean, Afrikan, Soul Food, Breakfast & Brunch, and of course many sweet treats! 🍦

For real, I even use this app in my hometown! You can also share restaurants with the app to include. I know I have! 💕

The way to this woman’s heart IS through her stomach.

EAT OKRA, Keep Sharing! ❤️🖤💚

### 5/5 — Love EatOkra!

### 5/5 — Amazing resource

This directory is a solid resource to identify overlooked and undertrafficked businesses nationwide. I found my new favorite local Jamaican restaurant on here.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — I Want It To Be Great, But It’s Horrid

*2023-06-20*

I love the the concept with the heat of a thousand suns, but the execution looks terrible. Why did I have a Florida joint when I am in Los Angeles? That doesn’t make sense, especially when it came in the Los Angeles search.

The reviews seem suspect. For instance, Hot and Cool had a 3.1 okras rating even though the sole written review rated it 5 okras. Why not include a feature letting users know who gave what rating, even if they elect not to write a review?

The interface looks ugly and not terribly polished, yet one gets ads begging for money every few seconds. Google funding this poorly designed app reeks of tech bro nobles oblige. Let’s give “those” people some coins so that we can continue not to hire the talented ones and look kewl and with the times, it doesn’t matter if the “those people “ lack talent. MLK Jr. did not die for this. SMH. And shame on Apple for featuring this really bad app on Juneteenth!

### 1/5 — Wow

*2021-12-02, version 3.9.0*

While I think it is great that this app gives access to the African American culture and food. The advertising of it only showing black owned businesses is horrible. I do not support segregating black owned businesses from any other business owned by another ethnicity. This app does exactly what was promoted and encouraged during the time of civil unrest following the civil war and long past it. I’m astounded that this is ok.

### 1/5 — Couldn’t sign in with Facebook

*2020-07-08, version 2.0.1*

I don’t like having to sign up for an account anyway, but trying to sign up with Facebook was a nightmare. It just sent me in a constant loop from the app to FB in Safari to the FB app, back to the app prompting me to sign up with Facebook. Tried exiting out of the app and signing in again with FB and it did the same thing. Not signing up with email just to check this out and get bombarded with spam, so I just uninstalled. Will do my own research for local POC owned eateries.

### 1/5 — Don’t use FB to sign up

*2020-06-27, version 2.0.1*

I was so pumped to try this app but i was slightly put off when I saw I had to create an account. I think at least the search option for your area should be free if people just want to check this app out. I attempted for 15 mins to sign up via Facebook but all the app did was bounce me around from Fb in safari to the FB app, and then back to the app prompting me to launch FB in safari. 🙄 welp I guess I wasn’t meant to be.

### 2/5 — Huh?😭😭

*2024-08-10, version 6.18.0*

I was really excited for this app so I could know of black owned places to eat at when I want to go out out. And, the brief flash that I saw before it stopped working (😅🥲) was promising and made me even more excited. However, like I stated and saw from another review it just stopped working everytime I tried to go back in all I got was a froze white screen…idk what’s to fix with this but hopefully in time it does get fixed and I can come back around to this cuz I def would want to support and also have better help finding good black food spots.

### 2/5 — Keeps shutting down

*2024-08-08, version 6.17.0*

The app would be great if I could use it. It works intermittently which is frustrating. Whenever I try to use the app or open anything on the app my screen goes completely white and I cannot see anything.

### 2/5 — Crashes over and over after a few seconds

*2024-02-02, version 6.0.8*

Saw this app featured in the App Store and would like to support the community. Downloaded and opted to skip creating an account. The app crashes after about 3 seconds to the Home Screen of my iPhone. Happens repeatedly. Tried restarting the phone (which I really shouldn’t have to do to get an app to work). No change. Running app version 6.08 on iOS 17.3.

### 2/5 — A Couple Missing Features

*2022-09-08, version 3.30.1*

I like the concept of this app, but there are a couple of missing features. First, the search results don’t show the city the restaurant is in, only the street address. This makes it really difficult to know if the restaurant is actually nearby. The other problem is that there is no way to show all the restaurants on the map at the same time, so I can’t easily view the restaurants near me.

### 2/5 — At first I thought seems a bit racist, but I do like food from all cultures.

*2022-06-19, version 3.22.1*

The app is lacking, had to screenshot and zoom in to read the ingredients. Some of the product’s links are broken. When I did a local search it only came up with one eatery, I know that’s false. It did recommend some decent wings so I gave you two stars.

### 3/5 — App is bugging

*2022-02-03, version 3.11.8*

I like the concept of the app and would really like to use this. Maybe it just doesn't work well with my city but I'm not able to select it and all of the boxes are grayed out where I think restaurants are supposed to appear. (It's not my internet)

### 5/5 — Best app for the culture

*2026-02-24, version 6.41.0*

### 5/5 — Get this one!

*2025-11-20, version 6.38.0*

I’ve found great restaurants using Eat Okra in several different states. I don’t usually leave reviews but I like to contribute to the helpful info users have shared with me. It’s a great app especially for business travelers who are tired of the same ol’ chain restaurants in every city.

### 5/5 — Love this app!! :)

*2025-09-30, version 6.36.0*

There aren’t a lot of black owned restaurants where I live, but this app helps me find them all and keep track of them all. I absolutely love this app. I couldn’t recommend it enough. It’s really easy to use too.

### 5/5 — Fantastic for avoiding BOBs!

*2025-08-23, version 6.34.0*

As a white man, the last place I ever want to spend my money is a bIack owned business. This app makes it easy to avoid the unsanitary conditions and poor customer service common at BOBs. 5 stars!

### 5/5 — Amazing Resource

*2024-12-29, version 6.25.1*

Comprehensive app that creates one place to locate and experience diverse businesses. Well done.

### 5/5 — Circulate the Black Dollar in the Black Community!

*2024-12-23, version 6.25.1*

I love this app, thank you for helping make it easy to super black owned establishments! Respect ✊🏿

### 5/5 — My Go-To “Club 92” App!

*2024-12-12, version 6.25.1*

In the circles I travel in, I recently learned and proudly accept that I am the “Club 92 Tech/Travel/Culture Queen.” It gives me great pleasure to share the EatOkra app as my #1 go-to, ride-or-die app since its inception in beta mode because it ALWAYS gives info for great restaurants and food sources for this foodie to share with others to help them #BuyBlack and #BuyLocal.

NOTE: I’m a verified user. I received no compensation for this review. I do not know or nor have I ever met the app creators, but I am a ‘fan lady’ who cheers them on, watches their interviews, and glows in their success! This app is a post-COVID pandemic success story. #SpreadTheWord #MichelesGreenBook
