The hydrometeor classification products you’re likely referring to are notorious for appearing inaccurate, and it comes down to the underlying NWS dual-pol algorithm rather than how the app displays it. The accuracy degrades as the beam travels farther from the radar, and the melting layer can produce inconsistent results at any range. Because of this, I’d recommend the precipitation type product for everyday use, unless you have a specialized case that calls for the raw classification. Hurricane tracks and outlines now cross the International Date Line correctly. Before, a storm near the line could draw a stripe across the whole map. Replay any hurricane from the archive and see the danger from the sea. Surge Watches & Warnings shows where official NHC surge watches and warnings were in effect along the coast. Peak Storm Surge shows the highest surge NHC forecast for each stretch of coast. Surge Flooding paints how deep NHC expected the water to get, with a band for shoreline that is normally wet. Turn on the crosshair readout in the replay bar to read the flood depth as you pan. Storm surge covers historical storms and is available with Echoes Premium. The hurricane forecast cone has a new look that stays readable over satellite imagery. A small legend on the map lists the tropical layers you have on. The storm replay bar now shows the real NHC advisory number and the storm's intensity while you scrub. Plus bug fixes and stability improvements. ### 3.1.2 — 2026-08-08 The national radar mosaic (MRMS) and surface analysis (RTMA) now show the newest frame when you return to the app or switch products. Before, they could replay an older cached frame. Both layers stay fresher in general. The model product picker no longer tags shear, updraft and downdraft, and storm motion with your wind unit. Those products do not use one. Updraft and downdraft forecast charts now follow the correct unit too. The map crosshair readout now matches the bottom bar: echo tops read in kft, hail size in inches. Bottom bar values now follow the unit each product actually uses. This fixes wrong readings on pressure and precipitation rate products. Station plots, wind barbs, river gauge icons, and air quality icons are now sized correctly on iPad. Before, all of them used one flat scale built for iPhone. Cloud cover icons no longer blur when you zoom in. METAR and weather station charts now snap to the nearest real observation when you scrub. Observed lines no longer invent swings between real readings. The historical radar chip now shows the correct date in every time zone. Before, it could read a day early west of UTC. Landscape map view is sharper, and panning no longer flickers along county lines. Plus more bug fixes and stability improvements. ### 3.1.1 — 2026-08-05 The national radar mosaic (MRMS) adds eight products: Low-Level Reflectivity, Current Hail Size, Hail Index, Hail Probability, VIL Density, Ice Aloft, and echo tops at 18 and 50 dBZ. Areas outside radar coverage stay clear on all of them. Hail colors follow inch thresholds, so one-inch severe hail reads as severe instead of sitting in the green band. Low-Level Shear and Mid-Level Shear resolve weak rotation as well as strong. Storm history tracks show the full path from formation. Each past track point carries the storm's phase at that time. Post-tropical, subtropical, and remnant low each get their own color and label. Tap a past track point to see whether the storm made landfall there. Tap a forecast point to see how far the 39, 58, and 74 mph winds reach in each direction, plus the radius of maximum winds. Live radar updates recover better after a network drop.
