### 2/5 — Barely functional

*2021-11-29, version 2.2.3*

AI bots become stuck thinking, stalling the game. The developer’s website is down/gone.

So sad that there isn’t any support for this game anymore.

### 3/5 — Good game, some dubious stuff

*2021-01-22, version 2.2.3*

A reasonable recreation of the original board game, with some AI generally decent enough to at least go through the motions of competing.

A few issues:
1. Hydran AI is terrible, so blue AI needs to be Terran
2. AI prioritizes ancient-busting to the point that there’s little point for a human player to choose Draco
3. There is some very dubious “randomness” is the explore tiles. The human player can expect to get the worst tile available.

### 2/5 — Quality has gone down

*2021-01-09, version 2.2.3*

I have had this game for a few years and I decided to fire it back up after a year or so has gone by. Since it was so long I started the tutorial. When it came for the first ai player to go it got stuck on thinking and never proceeded. I could touch other ui elements and they worked but it was stuck thinking. I touched the menu button and the music changed but it was still on the tutorial screen thinking.
Restarted the app and tried to resume but now the interface shows all resources at 32 and it is locked up.
So sad, I do not want to try getting into a game because I don’t want it to lock up and this is not a quick 10 minute game.
I hope the developers read this. I hope they fix it but to see the rating go down to a 2.6 at the time of this writing it does not appear they are taking it serious enough. There seems to be a lot of complaints.
Seems like all they did was update this to note that is the first edition version. Since the 2nd edition is out perhaps they don’t care anymore. But then the update before that was 4 years ago.

Abandoned? I guess buyer beware.

### 3/5 — Slipping

*2018-05-22, version 2.0.5*

Picked this up for the first time in a while and found the interface unintuitive and a little buggy. Still no expansions, so I'm guessing it's dead.

### 1/5 — recent updates broke the game...

*2018-04-27, version 2.0.5*

okay, i bought this about a year ago, and the game played great. the ai was challenging but fair. all the combats played out properly.

cut to 2017, there has been a couple of updates that ocurred in late 2016 since i last played.

first problem, massive lag. i open the app and there is a several seconds of delay before the menu options appear.
then, while playing, there's a 1-2 second delay after EVERY action.
before the update, this was never an issue.

during combat, there's a delay between every shot. the game no longer shows the dice rolls. you can't tell what's going on.

then, the ai get broken sometimes. sometimes it gets stuck in a decision loop and just freezes.

in one game, i moved my ships and then tried to undo the action and then the game glitched out, put my ships back where they were but then also left duplicates in the new sectors but then i was unable to end my turn. i could slide the button but the game would not allow me to end it.

in another game, i saved the game to return to it later and when i reloaded the game, it glitched out and gave me maxed out numbers on every resource but i was unable to execute any commands and had to start over.

this update broke the game completely FUBAR.

the game is literally (not figuratively) UNPLAYABLE in this state.

and it makes no sense, because the game was perfectly fine before.

if not for this, i would have given it 5 stars, but in it's current state, i must rate it at the minimum and recommend that you do not buy it because it is broken.

### 1/5 — I love The Boardgame and want to love this, but game breaking bugs

*2018-04-13, version 2.0.5*

The boardgame is my favorite boardgame. I used to love this app and really want to love it now. But... there are tons of game breaking bugs that flat out prevent you from playing it. I wish the dev would address them. I understand there is no money to be made in supporting a game down the line, but, they could release expansions as DLC. Unfortunately this is neglectware 😢. If the dev comes back and fixes it, I would gladly revise my rating. I currently can not launch a single player game at all. I get to the race selection screen but it will not allow me to select my race. I tried removing and reinstalling the app to no avail.

### 1/5 — Officially broken.

*2018-03-25, version 2.0.5*

As of March 2018, the game AI now hangs indefinitely on its first turn. Running an iPad Pro 9.7. Used to run great on my old iPad 2 a couple years ago good it seems that those days are gone now. Appears that this game is broken and no longer under development. Shame.

### 2/5 — Without option to remove missiles, very same-y

*2017-12-22, version 2.0.5*

Missiles are overpowered, removing them improved the game a lot. One off the latest “updates” no longer allows this, so the game is now deleted from my ‘Pad.

### 1/5 — Bugs kill the game

*2017-11-12, version 2.0.5*

Crying shame too, used to be a favorite of mine.

### 3/5 — Where’s the Bug Repellant?

*2017-09-27, version 2.0.5*

A challenging board game seemingly excellently reproduced except for a few balance issues, EXCEPT it now appears infested with game killer bugs. Prior to the last few updates I didn’t have much trouble with this game, yet now can’t finish one. It’s now unplayable at least in Sept 2017.

### 1/5 — Great Game that has been broken

*2017-08-19, version 2.0.5*

This used to be a great adaptation of a great game; unfortunately the recent update completely borked it. As many others have reported, it now fails most of the time, and it's almost impossible to complete a game. A great shame, as despite a few minor glitches it used to be a fun, playable game - but now it's unplayable, and should be removed from the stroe.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Tutorial and fighting don’t work

*2024-09-04, version 2.6*

Not working

### 1/5 — DO NOT BUY THIS TRASH

*2024-04-23, version 2.6*

App used to work. These idiots ruined a perfectly good game.

### 1/5 — Crashes immediately

*2024-03-12, version 2.6*

Can’t even start the tutorial on iPad

### 1/5 — Unplayable - Game crashes

*2022-03-15, version 2.2.3*

Don’t buy. I finished my first turn and the game freezes with the next AI player “contemplating their turn”.

### 1/5 — Unfortunately unbroken…

*2022-01-13, version 2.2.3*

Can play first turn but then gets stuck on AI thinking. Looks like it would be a brilliant game if fixed

### 1/5 — The worst version of an excellent game

*2021-11-10, version 2.2.3*

This app is built with the original rules of the game, which had some balance issues. Notably, the missiles don’t require power, so loading them up on a dreadnaught with some computers is unstoppable. It also doesn’t implement some notable improvements from the game’s expansions, such as variable turn order. For some reason, the game also considers moving through an allied species’ unoccupied territory as an aggressive action and gives you the traitor penalty.
Hopefully, the publisher will upgrade the app and enable content from the expansions some day. The actual board game is excellent in its current iteration.

### 1/5 — Broken

*2021-06-23, version 2.2.3*

I can play the first turn then it gets stuck with the next AI player thinking.

### 1/5 — Used to be good. Now, it’s useless.

*2021-03-07, version 2.2.3*

I used to enjoy this game on iOS, but it had been a couple of years since I’d last tried to play it. Now it just freezes, as other reviewers have said. And what a disappointment it was to find this out. I guess it’s time for the delete button on this one, but I will miss it.

### 1/5 — Fraud - Do Not Buy!

*2021-02-14, version 2.2.3*

Game is defective. It does not function. Do not buy!
Seller is defrauding the public and should be banned from the App market.
Apparently the seller is knowingly selling a defective app that will not function. (See the many complaints.)
Seller will not correct app so it can be played.

### 1/5 — Hopeful... disappointed.

*2020-12-23, version 2.2.3*

I saw that this app had an update 2 months ago and a positive review a month ago, so I gave it a try. The tutorial glitched out so hard that I couldn't use the save file, but I know how to play the game, so I figured I could muddle through the interface. My first game vs a few AI had me unable to select planets to colonize after my Advanced Economy research, the map scroll and zoom were frustrating at best, and the turn order never changed based on pass order. Basically unplayable. Hopefully Apple approves my refund.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — New to the game

*2024-07-17, version 2.6*

Hi all,

Big fan of 4X games, and came across this game a few weeks ago, and can’t put it down. Fantastic game, and adaptation. One ask, any future plans to upgrade to the second edition? That would be sweet, happy to pay for it as well? Thanks

### 5/5 — Nice adaptation!

*2024-06-10, version 2.6*

Crashes a few times but doesn’t lose place in game. Please release an adaptation of Second Dawn! 🙏

### 5/5 — Great app of one of my favorite Boardgame

*2022-07-11, version 2.5*

Simple to play, yet hard to master. Very good mix of skill and randomness.

I hope someone put energy to add expansions AND create competitive online. Would add a lot of replay value.

Enjoy!

### 5/5 — Good to me

*2020-11-29, version 2.2.3*

I have the board game and the expansion. The design undergirding eclipse is one of the best in gaming. I have not had any issues playing the app.

### 5/5 — So glad this is available again!!!

*2020-11-13, version 2.2.3*

This is such a great game. It’s been unavailable on the App Store for years but I’m glad to see it’s back again. Looking forward to the release of second dawn.

### 5/5 — Excellent digital representation of a great game

*2020-11-01, version 2.2.3*

This was made quite a long time ago and disappeared from the app store for years. When it popped back up and I finally got to buy it, I wasn’t really expecting much, especially compared to some newer games. But this blew me away. The interface is fantastic and the AI is quite good. This is one of the best board game adaptations I’ve played, at least single player. I haven’t tried multiplayer and can’t comment on it.

The only issue I have is that I’m VERY suspicious of the dice rolls. Maybe I’m just comically unlucky, but I might start keeping track of the dice results to make sure.

### 5/5 — Amazing!

*2020-10-25, version 2.2.3*

Incredible that this game has re-appeared on iOS after 4 years in the wilderness. All appears to be fixed now and seems stable. Thank you so much Brettspielwelt!!!

### 5/5 — Possibly the best tabletop style 4X on iOS

*2018-02-04, version 2.0.5*

I think this game is ace, unlike lots of other reviewers I have not played the original tabletop game, but I am aware how well it is regarded (8+/10 on Gameboard Geek). I’m playing on an iPad Mini 4 and don’t have any issues reading the text, so not sure why others are?
Top game, with Online playability. If I could give it 4.5* I would.

### 5/5 — A masterpiece 4x board game

*2017-11-17, version 2.0.5*

I'm so happy to enjoy this board game on IOS.
This is the surely one of the best 4x board game as well as the best ported IOS game yet the game system is difficult and not intuitive for newbies.
As other revews already mentioned, it's getting quite often frozen not like previous version. (even during tutorial mode! Definitely update is required to fix them)
But if you are real board gamer, you'll agree the game is too good to be underrated due to the bugs.

### 5/5 — Excellent 4x game!

*2017-03-28, version 2.0.5*

This is a great adaptation of the board game. Excellent turn based strategy game of science, exploration, and domination.
