## What is Eclipse Safari?

Eclipse Safari is your comprehensive interactive guide to the August 21 2017 Total Solar Eclipse of the Sun, visible along a narrow path spanning the USA from the West coast to the East coast. It's a free app developed by the makers of the award-winning SkySafari 5 astronomy app in collaboration with Space.com, the premier source of eclipse and space news.

Here is what you can do with Eclipse Safari:

Countdown Timer: Count down to when the moon’s shadow makes landfall on the West coast of the United States - down to the second - with the Eclipse Countdown clock. During the eclipse, the countdown clock dynamically updates to reveal which state the shadow is in and how long it will take to reach your location.

Space.com Eclipse News: Eclipse news and in-depth articles from Space.com, the leader in astronomy and space news.

Interactive Eclipse Map: Find the best location to observe the eclipse. Select a location on the map to retrieve accurate eclipse event times for any location on Earth.

Eclipse Simulator: Simulate the eclipse from your location or any location on the Earth. A time slider lets you manipulate time and simulate the eclipse from start to end.

Shadow Tracker: Enter Space View and watch the moon’s shadow travel across the face of the Earth.

Live Eclipse Updates: Breaking news on the eclipse from all over the internet.

Eclipse Viewing Guide: A comprehensive viewing and safety guide to the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse. We have you covered with everything you need to know in order to get the best eclipse experience.

Eclipse Live Stream: On eclipse day, watch a live stream of the eclipse as it happens.

Weather Forecast: 2-day forecast for any location in the U.S.

### 5/5 — Amazing!

*2017-09-05, version 1.0*

Good work!

### 5/5 — Best Eclipse App

*2017-08-26, version 1.0*

I used this app in my fourth and fifth grade gifted classes. The students loved it!

### 1/5 — What a horrible thing

*2017-08-22, version 1.0*

So, the day of the eclipse, the hour before IT STOPPED WORKING!!!! Of course there was the GREAT POPUP for an in app purchase for the UPGRADED VERSION. REALLY??

What a load of ....

Developer response???? A very long convoluted string of pseudo hypertext??? Meaningless to me.

### 1/5 — Total Failure

*2017-08-22, version 1.0*

The interactive eclipse map failed completely about 2 hours before totality. So, we went old school, ignored the app, and just enjoyed the event. App was great disappointment

### 1/5 — Doesn't work

*2017-08-22, version 1.0*

Waste of time. It has no info on eclipse times when you click on your location.

Update 8/22: received response from developer but it's just a bunch of useless links. Please advise.

**Developer response:** Despite our best efforts, there were some slow service periods on eclipse day for which we sincerely apologize. We were overwhelmed by the response and while our servers managed to keep up most of the time, many of the services that we relied on (e.g. timezone services, contact times, nws forecast) were pushed to the point of breakage.
At the peak there were thousands of server calls per second, enough for us to crash the National Weather Service API server. In the last hours before the eclipse alone, our apps were downloaded over 500,000 times.

We planned backups to backups, increased capacity as the apps popularity grew but in the end it wasn't enough. We really fought hard to have the best app experience possible. We've learned lessons too and will continue to improve the app for the next eclipse event.

I hope you still managed to enjoy the eclipse. Please get in touch with us so we can make it up to you at eclipseapp@simcur.zendesk.com

Thank you

### 1/5 — Failed when I needed it

*2017-08-21, version 1.0*

Worked fine up until the day of the eclipse. About an hour before the eclipse was due to start it became unresponsive. None of the "view" buttons would do anything. Disappointing.

### 1/5 — Not there when you needed it

*2017-08-21, version 1.0*

As the sky went dark with the moon crossing the sun, this app gave me light... in the form of a blank screen. To paraphrase Maggie O'Hooligan, "Tanks fer nuttin', Danny."

### 1/5 — Didn't work during eclipse time, useless

*2017-08-21, version 1.0*

I downloaded this app to watch the eclipse with my family. I used it in the days leading up to the eclipse however when we wanted to use the app during the eclipse the site was bogged down and we were unable to use it. Overall concept was okay, interactive map wasn't great. For a free app it was okay, just didn't serve any purpose when it came down to needing it.

### 1/5 — Did they not anticipate the load?

*2017-08-21, version 1.0*

The app was working an hour ago. Now I'm getting no response.
Did they not anticipate and plan for the load of everyone using this app during the eclipse???

### 1/5 — Not what I would call 'feature rich'

*2017-08-21, version 1.0*

The app would probably be great if you did two things:
1. Pay for the upgrade, or
2. Don't use it for a solar eclipse

It would seem that their servers are having trouble scaling up for the user load, and as of this instance (1 hour before the eclipse), is not retrieving any data. You would think an app that would be used one in a decade would work during the only time it will be used.

Oh well, guess I'll wait another 99 years to try out the app again after they fix their issues.
