The app was a little bit buggy, and sometimes it was very hard to get the app to approve the bicycle checkout. So long as I double checked that the bike was docked correctly I had no problem stopping my time. I ran into two problems with ecobici. First sometimes the bikes just didn’t work. A couple of times I had bikes back just spun out because the gearing was broken, and my partner had bikes with loose brakes and seats that would not stay up. Second, and this is no real knock on Ecobici, Mexico City is a nightmare to get around on a bike. Unless you know the city extremely well or have flawlessly working maps expect to get lost a lot. And very frustrated. A bunch of times I had an estimate on Google Maps of a ride of less than 30 minutes and it ended up taking me 46 minutes, which meant that I got charged a bit more on ecobici. The charge was low enough, but navigating traffic and unclear directions made something that is always fun for me – riding a bike – and incredibly stressful experience. I’m exceptionally comfortable riding in traffic, but getting lost was just unbearable. I wouldn’t use bikes again in CDMX. ### 2/5 — Used to work… *2026-03-25* I visited CDMX a couple years ago and the app worked fine. Now I’m back and it won’t take any of my credit cards. Doesn’t have Apple Pay. Each rider needs their own app / device. It needs to verify your identity and asks for address. I just want to ride a bike… ### 1/5 — Rubbish app *2026-02-12* Great when it works but my partner tried to register multiple cards with the app and none worked. Three times I’ve locked my bike up and it doesn’t register as the ride is finished, even though it’s locked in. I can’t remove the bike, I can’t lock it up, and it just sits there running up my bill. Customer service doesn’t respond. This is a scam. ### 1/5 — Wasted an hour trying to make the payment *2025-12-16* The app accepted payment from my partner via his android, and there was no way to make payment for me, either from his phone or my iPhone. We tried 3 different accounts with different email addresses and 3 bank cards, no way to figure it out. Wasted time and money as he won’t use it anymore. Service agents are AI bots that don’t help at all. ### 4/5 — Great if you can get it! *2025-11-28* My partner was able to get his 3 day pass on his phone. Mine just would not work. I had to go to the Ecobici kiosk. After about an hour, the guy had to use his own email address for me to get the pass. However, once it works, it’s fantastic. There are loads of docking stations across the city. Maximum ride is 45mins. But if you ride for 40 then dock, wait 2 minutes, then start over, you can ride all day. We rode from Polanco to Coyoacán to the Frida Khalo museum. We just kept docking the bikes along the way. ### 2/5 — Not usable *2025-11-27* It is a very buggy app. Every second time, it won't either unlock the bikes or it doesn't want to lock the bike back, so it's very hard to plan your schedule. It constantly happens when you're in a rush and you need a bike and you plan to have it, and you'll come and you can't open although it says it's available. It's really annoying, although the service idea is nice, but it's currently unusable. ### 1/5 — American - app & website not working!! *2025-11-21* App will send the 10 min expiration email to register account (to ride at all) up to an hour after submitting….went to website, on three bars of AT&T service for 10-15 minutes and 3-day pass page/button would not load. Terrible technology/systems for American email/phone #. ### 1/5 — Beware of bank service charge!!! *2025-11-12* This bike rental service is very disappointing. If you are a tourist be aware that they charge you credit card a cash advance instead of a credit card charge therefor your CC may charge extra fees after. Never again. Very often the docks will either be completely empty, or have 15 bikes there and none of them function. Also impossible to make card payments to them via their website as there is always an error message. The ecobici.mx domain blocks access outside of Mexico so once you go home they will have permanently trapped your info.
