I got the opportunity to share my experience beforehand with my study-gram community, but I thought it would be good to share my experience on here too. First, Effie has an amazing organization system that works for everyone. I’m a big notes person—especially when it comes to school assignments and personal projects. Effie provides all these creative ways to stay organized in an efficient and productive way. I personally love how minimalistic the appearance of this platform is. It allows me to stay on top of my work without feeling overwhelmed with all these other tabs or widgets around my notes/mind-maps. Secondly, the mind-mapping tool is one of my favorites. When it comes to writing important papers I find the mind-mapping tool very useful in order to organize my thoughts or quotes I want to incorporate into my work. It’s clean and pretty at the same time, and very smooth—things got pulled up in a blink and the syncing across devices is almost instant. Just a few boxes I still need to check for me to be totally converted: 1. word & character count for current selection: now it only counts total word & characters in a sheet; current selection count is important to writers who need to control length :) 2. word & character count to show on sheet list view: to it’s easier to have an overview of how long each sheet is, again for overall length control. Right now my solution is to manually type the character count (got it from sheet statistics) as a comment block in the first line, so the count will show up in the preview line in sheet list… and if I’ve edited that sheet, I again manually update that comment block to reflect the latest count… a bit too manual is it lol? 3. a total word & character count for each folder would be great too. I see that we can also select all the sheets in a folder, and get that total count from statistics. But a more direct way of getting that info would be so nice. 4. and if I could hope for more… would be super great if there is a counter for each section within a sheet too! (Like if I have heading 1 and 2, then it counts for me how many word/characters under heading 1 and 2. But so far I’ve only come across one app that does that - not very common it looks like) 5. getting greedy here… I don’t see this function in other apps I’ve tried, so I’m not sure how achievable is this. Is it possible to do a find & replace within a folder, so that all the sheets can be updated at once, instead of having to go to each sheet? 1, 2 and 3 above matter to me much so I haven’t subscribed to the app yet. Moving across all my writings and building reliance on an app that doesn’t check all my boxes is not too desirable. But I’m very willing to subscribe if those features are introduced later. I really enjoy the writing experience Effie gives, and would hope to be able to use it as my main writing app :) ### 5/5 — Perfect *2022-05-12, version 2.0.0* I tried many MindMap and notes apps. The four stars will become five when they elaborate on the mind map feature. They responded to my email within the hour asking for examples and I sent them screenshots of Scapple by literature and latte. You'll be remembered every minute, every second that you need to upgrade. That's the price for using it for free. I don't mind paying for apps, but their pricing structure doesn't make sense for me. ### 1/5 — Has potential but awful execution *2022-09-18* I played with the app for a while and decided to upgrade to premium. Within my first 20 minutes of using the app it crashed twice. I cannot launch the mind map feature which was a huge selling point—it's *always* grayed out no matter what I do. And markdown might be nice for some users, but it's distracting and ugly to pure writers like myself. I was assuming I'd have the ability to turn it off, but I guess not. I will absolutely not be using this app for five more minutes and would love a refund, as it doesn't functionally work without crashing whenever I try to make any customizations to make it look tolerable. It's astonishing you can't change the colors of the fonts. ### 1/5 — Feels like a halfway product that uses fake native UI *2022-02-03, version 1.14.6* I download it at first sight as the preview images presented in the app store shows it like a native macOS app. The truth is it uses a webview that fakes the native experience. It feels slow and weird. If you can tolerate electron apps, feel free to give it a try, otherwise it's a no-no. UPDATE: The developer tries to tell me that this is not an electron app because of how small the size is. I never said this is an electron app. I said it FAKES the native experience. The user experience is NOT GOOD and gives me a feel of electron apps. ### 2/5 — 同步不了 *2024-09-10* pc端这两天怎么老是同步不了手机端文档啊，一打开就是那个云下载中断的标识，明明我的网络都是正常的 ### 2/5 — great concept *2023-01-28* but not intuitive and glitchy graphics and basic fuetures missing ### 3/5 — Syncing Issues *2026-01-19* I really really like this app, but it's frustrating how I can't tell when the app on my phone and computer are synced together so I can work between devices at different times. I can't even tell which account my computer is logged in to because it doesn't show in settings, so that I can confirm both devices are connected to the same email. Also the mobile and desktop versions don't update all together; at the time of writing, the desktop version is at 6.9 while the mobile version is 5.3. I just wish there was more consistency, but if you only use it on one device, the app is very handy. ### 3/5 — It's OK, but like 99% of its peers... *2024-01-27, version 3.4.0* .. the amounts being asked for using it are ludicrously unjustifiable. As I said, it's an OK app. It does some useful things, and for this it gets three stars. Where it simply cannot be tolerated (like 99% of its peers) is the ridiculous amounts of money being asked to use it. I'd be quite impressed if any of these developers can give a breakdown list of why the prices of their apps 'are what they are'. I've purchased apps this week that are literally 5-10 times more capable than this; to own, forever, or for the length of that version (with you being able to use the version and updates you bought forever) - and these apps ranged in price from $20-70! So, no, this app and all the others like it that ask for stupid amounts each month/year - with no such claim to do so (they simply cannot honestly and openly justify why they are so expensive) can go away. Apps like 'Curio', or 'Corkulous' and many, many others out there, can be bought as a one time purchase and often give you more. It's a real shame, this is a good app but has a greedy pricing system. I don't mind buying quality, but I won't 'rent' foolishly to make the greedy rich! ### 3/5 — Great, But… *2023-01-02* I can’t fully see the folder names. Even for free tier, it’s more than enough. Lighter than obsidian, richer than simplenotes, and more flexible and open than bear. Work seamlessly with Desktop Effie app. Easy share/export at per file level. I have used more than 20 markdown and Mindmap apps. Effie is second to none, all of them combined! Highly recommended. Yes especially recommended for ad hoc authoring on the fly. Have not tested or explored Effie widgets or shortcut workflows.
