The alerts aren’t reliable, the fan is impatiently trying to raise or lower the temperature too quickly. It’ll eventually blow out my coals if I don’t catch it. I have a medium egg and sometimes it feels like it’s trying to oxygenate an XL running full blast - then all of a sudden it’ll stave the flame until it’s out, then flood it again with full fan to try and recover eventually blowing it out. There was a time when I could use it almost like an oven, now I feel like I’m probably better off going old school and just using the vents. The egg can be pretty consistent over a long cook with just the vents, but the egg genius - not a chance anymore. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend it now. Maybe there should be a setting for different sizes? Medium rare is 130. ### 1/5 — Look for a different temp controller for Egg *2026-03-01, version 6.7.24* Purchased device a few years ago and it was great - freedom to cook a brisket and sleep was wonderful. Recently the fan device stopped connecting to the app; I updated to 6.7.24 and still unable to connect reliably. Help in the app points to manuals with no troubleshooting tips. When attempting to connect I get an error message that states “unable to connect” and when you acknowledge the error the app then states connection successful. ### 1/5 — 140 is minimum temp??? *2026-02-21, version 6.7.24* Your developers have ruined this software. I want my steaks cooked to 120 degrees and the lowest the software will accept is 140! Who are you to determine how I can cook my steak? For the price you have to pay for the hardware, I expect way more in the software. This Christmas I smoked a turkey and the system kept disconnecting. Thankfully the machine stayed on task but I couldn’t see it. For Christmas Day it totally failed eventually and had to unplug it and start a new cook. Almost burned my prime rib as it let the temp get way too hot while reporting the temp was falling. My next one will be a cheap one rather than the BGE brand ### 1/5 — Garbage *2025-12-25, version 6.7.9* Not sure who they have updating this app, but they obviously have no idea what they are doing!it used to be a good product, now it’s just junk! It is very unreliable, won’t hold set temps. Used to work fine and previously would give it about 4.5 stars. Great when it works, but now with the update, that’s only about 10% of the time. Had this product for ~ 3 years, and the app has gotten gradually worse to the point that it’s unusable. I now use the web interface from Flame Boss, but the website has issues for ‘touch devices’ and best on a laptop. 1. The trends graph don’t refresh automatically 2. The “Share Cook” function doesn’t appear (or appears unreliabily 3. The app has to be open for the connection to remain in place. I'm constantly having to reset it, re-add it and play with the thing to get it to work. It's always last min hiccups, I'm starting a smoked ham, for Christmas, and it just stopped connecting. Now after all the updates it is basically worthless. It won’t stay connected to my WiFi even when I bring it inside and set it right beside my router. Why do companies do this? If lucky, it is still connected to my cooker and I can select the current cook from the history tab. If unlucky, most of the time, the device shows not connected. I have to close the app and restart the app. It quickly sees the controller and connects. I then select the book from history and I’m up and running again until I set my phone down. Work fine the first year each then the second years they don’t work well until they don’t work. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Perfect addition to the BGE! *2023-04-09* Love the app. Pros: 1) can have up to three meat thermometers going at once 2) easy to setup and get going 3) with WiFi connectivity, you don’t have to worry about range 4) push notifications are super helpful and prompt Wishes for future releases: 1) allow you to use the thermometers without the fan for regular grilling 2) a button to reset the cook timer so you can start it when you put the meat on the BGE 3) maybe I’m misunderstanding the Cook Name field, but mine resets to numbers after each use. I use my egg genius for all my long cooks, and it has been on point. I have bad AT&T network, picked up a mesh network. Terry, Frank (flame boss) and their team have handled my questions every time and helped me get set up. I highly recommend this product and encourage people to reach out for help if you have any issues, because they do a great job accommodating their customers. I have used mine and a handful of my friends over different WiFi’s and it’s worked like a champ every time.
