### 2/5 — Save your money

*2026-05-16, version 1.3.1*

Wouldn't recommend - bought it for my almost 4 year old who is struggling to remember his letters. This app doesn't teach the alphabet, even though its tag line is 'learn the alphabet'. It helps you learn how to write the letters, but even then this app fails as it is so sensitive to you going off the lines it is impossible for a 3/4 year old to get right, even on the easiest level setting.

### 2/5 — Frustration Station!

*2016-01-30, version 1.1.0*

I want to purchase an app like this for my classroom rotation activity - Technology Table - I love that the user can self-review the "draw the letter" function. However the "trace the letter" function is abysmally sensitive! I have perfect handwriting and still get yelled at by the egg. Must be either removed or improved. I cannot allow this app, in its current state, to destroy my students' confidence at this crucial phase of their literacy education.

### 2/5 — Critters

*2014-03-13, version 1.1.0*

My 4 year old LOVEs this app, however I am really disappointed that for him to be rewarded with a certain 'critter' they have to play the app for 30 or 60 minutes. Considering this is an educational app it really shouldn't be encouraging young children to be playing for that length of time.

### 2/5 — Needs urgent work..

*2013-11-14, version 1.1.0*

Please, please fix the settings! Even on Easy mode, failure to trace very accurately results in multiple 'Bad Luck'.
At 4-years of age, this is not encouraging learning by progressive, multiple failure. And at 40, it makes me want to delete, and not recommend it due to frustration.
Please update..

### 2/5 — Please fix

*2013-08-19, version 1.1.0*

This has great potential but disappointing for my three and four year old grandchildren when the eggs won't crack please fix the bugs

### 2/5 — Not as great as online

*2013-08-17, version 1.1.0*

My daughter and I were very disappointed this app. The tracing the letters is very specific and there is little grace that this is an app done by a finger on the iPhone. As an adult I even struggled to hit the required lines properly and frustratingly kept getting bad luck try again even though I had draw the letter.

### 3/5 — Dot To Dot Letter Tracing Discouraging to 3 to 5 year olds.

*2013-07-01, version 1.1.0*

The app is great and just as others have mentioned it has so much learning potentional however the app is let down by the letter tracing dot to dot games as they are just to sensitive to being perfect on every dot.

I do understand that the dot to dot tracing is set this way to encourage the children to practice over and over to form correct letters however apps of this level are aimed for Pre-K being 3 to 5 whom are not writing yet or are just learning how.

The app really needs to be revised / updated to fix this let down of the restriction / sensitivity of the letter tracing from dot to dot.

My older kids are big fans of reading eggs and thus the younger children are familiar and really wanting to play the app and be successful but the letter tracing dot to dot sensitivity is discouraging for them.

### 3/5 — Good learning tool

*2013-06-07, version 1.1.0*

We've found this game useful to review sounds and to practise early writing. However, there are glitches that could do with being ironed out. More critters or no critters as rewards would be better. As it is, the first few critters are easy to obtain, getting the kids drawn into the whole reward system. Then it becomes much harder to obtain, encouraging long screen-time and now the kids don't want to bother because it's just too hard to gain them. Also the play for 2 consecutive days critter just doesn't work.

### 3/5 — Frustrated dot to dots

*2013-05-25, version 1.1.0*

This is a great set of apps, it has so much learning potential however the tracing and dot to dot games are way too hard and we end up with very frustrated little critters trying to write perfectly. This should be made to be more lenient to encourage little fingers!

### 1/5 — Too sensitive

*2013-05-20, version 1.1.0*

The tracing of letters is too sensitive in easy. My 3 year old can do reading eggs and is doing a pretty close job of tracing but keeps having to start again because he goes just past a dot. Even I have had trouble sometimes.

### 2/5 — Disappointing

*2013-04-27*

This app does not teach the correct letter formation based on the New Zealand Curriculum. It is also disappointing when the three year old gets "bad luck" said to her when she only slightly draws over the line even though the letter she has drawn looks correct. Overall this app is disappointing.

### 1/5 — Impossibly sensitive

*2013-04-02, version 1.1.0*

Ap has a great concept and is fantastic apart form the one major issue that the letter writing and tracing is so exceptionally sensitive it makes it very very hard and frustrating for young children learning to write. At times it was so sensitive and critical it would fail me on writing some letters. Might be fine for your grade1 age group but them I'd have thought this app would be too basic for them. With great regret we deleted it.
If you have 3-5 year olds try pocket phonics instead until they can sort this app out!

### 3/5 — Eggy Alphabet

*2013-03-01, version 1.1.0*

On the whole this is an ok app but but my 4yo was getting very frustrated at tracing the letters when she just went a teeny bit over the line or a little bit too long and it decided that was an error. It's a bit too sensitive. I'm also not too happy at the fact that in order to unlock some of the "critters", you need to play for 30 or 60 mins non-stop, which is too long for a young child to be playing on a computer in my opinion.

### 2/5 — Where are the sounds?

*2013-02-20, version 1.1.0*

As a literacy teacher I am disappointed that this app focuses on the letter names when playing the picture game. Children are taught at school to listen to the sound, letter names only confuse the issue in young children. Please fix this problem, as your apps are usually well designed and are very popular!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — This is super bad!😡

*2021-07-15, version 1.3.1*

When I try to get all 18 critters it gets reset back to 0 which means it’s impossible to get all 18 critters

### 1/5 — Load of Crap!

*2020-03-20, version 1.2.5*

The app doesn’t teach the phonics which then confuses the child. When tracing the letters they expect it do be done exactly how they have it on the screen if it is off the line a little bit or slightly misses a dot it says try again causing frustration. I just wasted money on this

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2016-09-06, version 1.1.0*

Don't buy ..

### 1/5 — Disappointing

*2014-09-05, version 1.1.0*

The tracing part is so pedantic and then says bad luck. I ended up doing it for my child and even I got a bad luck. Very disappointing when it is already difficult to see what you are tracing over when you use your finger.

### 1/5 — Disappointing

*2014-07-24, version 1.1.0*

I wish i had read the other reviews befire purchasing this app. The tracing is far to hard and hearing 'bad luck' over and over is not encouraging. The reading eggs game on pc is fantastic but this app is a waste of money

### 1/5 — So frustrating the dot to dot

*2014-05-22, version 1.1.0*

I can't believe it constantly says bad luck if it's not absolutely perfect! Are you serious?! I want my money back!

### 1/5 — Won't open

*2014-03-17, version 1.1.0*

Application freezes when try opening. Have not been able to use it

### 1/5 — Worst review I've given for an App

*2014-02-19, version 1.1.0*

This App is such a disappointment. Like being in a class with a boring, critical, pedantic teacher. The negativity and monotony of 'bad luck, bad luck' is frustrating to listen to and I'm not even playing it. My 4 yr old does a darn good job of tracing over the clouds or leaves or dot to dot. But she lifts her finger up, turns a corner a little too sharply and it's not 'try again' but 'bad luck'? She covers all the images with her trace, does it within the shadow, it looks like the letter and still 'bad luck?' I'm so close to deleting but am hoping it will be rectified as does have some promise. Download 'Writing Wizard' for your child instead to practice their letters; now that's a great (and fun) app!

### 1/5 — Poor app

*2013-11-05, version 1.1.0*

Shockingly hard to use. The dot to dot tracing element is far too hard for a little child. Even I was having trouble. Also, not much reinforcement of the letter sounds vs names. Already deleted from my phone.

### 1/5 — Don't bother

*2013-10-11, version 1.1.0*

This is over sensitive and just not fun. There are other cheaper more fun tracing letter apps. This one does not teach letters is repetitively boring, kept daughter amused for 5 minutes, she gave up as parts where to sensitive and did not let her move forward.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Excellent for both handwriting and alphabet skills

*2013-02-22, version 1.1.0*

Excited to see this app and how it gets kids to write all the letters correctly. Having critters to hatch like on the website is a great motivator. The activities use the touch screen really well. A great addition to the Reading Eggs range.

### 5/5 — Love!

*2013-02-10, version 1.1.0*

What a great app! My child really loved playing this and I feel great knowing that they are learning their alphabet on so many levels. They are learning letter sounds and names as well as how to write each one correctly, this is a winner! Buying the full app now!

### 5/5 — Great way to learn letters

*2012-11-27, version 1.0.0*

A great app that's really appealing to a young child and is well made. My 4yo had fun trying out all the different features and she managed to hatch a really cute critter. I let her use a stylus to draw the letters which I think will help her handwriting skills.

### 5/5 — Love!

*2012-11-27, version 1.0.0*

What a great app! My child really loved playing this and I feel great knowing that they are learning their alphabet on so many levels. They are learning letter sounds and names as well as how to write each one correctly, this is a winner! Buying the full app now!

### 5/5 — Can not wait to show the kids!

*2012-11-27, version 1.0.0*

Going straight to download all letters! Just played some of the free content and it looks perfect for helping my youngest learn his alphabet (and should help my daughter get her letter writing sorted before school next year!) Thanks Reading Eggs!

### 4/5 — Challenging fun for my preschooler

*2013-11-03, version 1.1.0*

My son started playing this today. He has enjoyed tracing letters. This will really help with his mark making and writing skills. I have one negative though. He is learning phonics (letter sounds) at preschool, so he does not understand why the programme names the letters. It's a little confusing to him. This is also not in line with current uk teaching practice. That's why only 4 stars. Otherwise he is enjoying trying to collect eggs.

### 4/5 — great for kindy kids

*2013-04-26, version 1.1.0*

My 4.5yo (kindy) LOVES this app and plays it whenever she can. I have introduced a stylus to improve her tracing. She will spend up to 20 minutes playing in total silence - pretty amazing.

### 3/5 — Very usable; A good start but hardest level is too sensitive

*2015-12-28, version 1.1.0*

It's a good start for letter recognition and beginning writing skills. My son enjoys all of his "Eggy" apps and loves working on his Reading Eggs account online but this app became just a little difficult as we increased the difficulty settings to hard. Even I couldn't write properly according to the app and it's just too discouraging there. I downloaded and used it fine to an iPad mini 2 but it wouldn't open at all on my iphone 6 plus. Also, we have no idea where the internal app upgrade is inside the app as there was no extra feature. It looked a complete app as is so I can only assume the advertisement here is wrong? So If you want to stick with this app, we found it ok if we used either easy or medium setting but if your child wants to master early writing using the iPad or iPhone I'd suggest Writing Wizard even though it's $8 Aus as you can even print off worksheets. Don't be discouraged though, this app is still great and will work fine if you keep the difficulty settings right for you. Just don't bother with "hard".

### 3/5 — Ok app

*2015-03-26, version 1.1.0*

The repetition is great for learning. I do not agree with the narrator saying 'bad luck' if there is a mistake. It is quite annoying and does not give the child encouragement. They really should consider improving this.

### 3/5 — Ms

*2013-11-06, version 1.1.0*

Excellent
