### 1/5 — Don’t waste your money

*2026-08-06*

This app assumes that the user knows the identity of the bird (there are lists alphabetically and taxonomically but no way to look at pictures to identify an unknown bird. I’m super disappointed because this is an expensive app and I feel I’ve wasted money and time on it! Get Merlin, which is free!

### 2/5 — Old maps need updating

*2025-12-17*

A bit disappointing that the maps used are from the first version of the book. The second edition has much improved distribution maps and it would have been nice to see that.

### 4/5 — Registering the birds

*2025-02-08*

The notes component they would allow you to register birds as you see them doesn’t work. The app closes automatically whenever I try to use that function. I guess it needs an update. Other than that this is an excellent app

### 1/5 — Needs bird identifier process

*2024-09-12*

Unless you know the name of the bird you are looking at this app is not helpful.
There needs to be some kind of flowchart to work out the species (wing shape, plumage, colour of body parts, size, habitat, etc)
GPS could help with reducing possibilities.
But as it stands this app is useless for beginners.

### 1/5 — Not worth the money.

*2024-01-15*

Won’t recommend this app at all. Very basic, rather look at Merlin Bird ID or iBird Pro.

### 1/5 — No pictures for finding birds

*2022-10-12*

Half of bird ID is scanning the small icons to find bird close to what you’re seeing then looking individually. This app only has the names in letters with no picture until you click into the name which isn’t an app you can really use well at all for birding.

### 5/5 — Update required

*2022-01-28*

Hi please you update the app, the new updated hard copy field guide is out, can’t be that difficult to update the app, also Hires plates wouldn’t go a miss for iPad users. Thanks

### 4/5 — Birds of East Africa

*2021-05-15*

I hope I didn’t pay three times for this because I had to keep going back to the site and going through the whole process three time

### 5/5 — Search by region

*2020-09-07*

Would be great if there was a feature which we filter/organise birds by region where they’re found.

### 2/5 — They really didn’t try

*2019-07-19*

This is a digitized copy of the EA Helm Field Guide with audio clips - no more, no less. Helm is a good field guide, but I expect more from an interactive app. It’s next to useless when you’re trying to identify unfamiliar birds in the field. Unlike Sasol, which has a thumbnail image of each bird next to its name on the taxonomical and alphabetical listings, this has nothing. Sasol lets you tag and compare similar birds - not here. No geolocation features, basic sort functions, etc. the app is okay to maintain a basic list of birds seen and where, but even here its stunted due to lack of geolocation and time stamping capacity.

You can not rely on this app for much other than list maintenance when you’re in the field or trying to reconstruct a day in the evening.
