### 2/5 — Good but way too hard

*2025-02-02, version 1.5.0*

I get that you are trying for the bleak hopelessness of Lovecraft but a game should still be fun. This is a lot more frustrating than fun.

### 4/5 — Crash at startup fixed

*2021-01-29, version 1.5.0*

Delete and fresh install fixed the problem

### 3/5 — Won’t open

*2021-01-10, version 1.5.0*

Loved this game but now it won’t open. Hoping it gets fixed...

### 5/5 — After all these years...

*2020-08-09, version 1.5.0*

It is still my most loved iOS game. Hands down. Just a beautiful game all around. Fun, difficult, frustrating.....while my family plays the board game too, this version is perfect for the times when I can’t get the kids to play.....absolutely great game!

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2020-02-15, version 1.5.0*

This is a fantastic implementation of the board game!

### 3/5 — Impossible

*2019-08-22, version 1.5.0*

This game could be great, the graphics are good, the opening video is fine to watch once but upon multiple games is annoying and you can’t get rid of it without disabling all videos.
Now the real problem of this game is that it’s almost impossible to win, I have played over and over and it’s heavily bias towards the computer winning. The upshot is that it gets frustrating and pointless, and seems largely to be down to sheer luck rather than any skill. Could be a whole lot better.

### 5/5 — A shame that it seems abandoned

*2019-06-17, version 1.5.0*

I like the game but it has bugs and could use some love.

Twice I’ve completed all the conditions of a task, and it won’t complete. You either have to fail it to get out or feed dice to the abyss even though there is nothing left to get.

When the game is over, the summary needs to be better, and it would be nice if it tracked your progress with the monsters.

### 2/5 — Balance is off

*2019-04-19, version 1.5.0*

First let me say this is an awesome game. The app version is very well done as well. Where I fault it is, the game can swing to not your favour very quickly. I had the game advance doom by 6 in just one turn. That is over half required to lose the game. Something like that should not happen. It takes the back and forth struggle out of the game. Too bad as this could be epic fun every game.

### 2/5 — Good game but RNG is BS

*2019-04-06, version 1.5.0*

I know luck happens but this luck seems manufactured.

### 4/5 — Would be perfect if it let you skip cutscenes or had online multiplayer

*2018-12-30, version 1.5.0*

Having online multiplayer would be nice, but not being able to skip cutscenes by clicking on them or hitting an X or something once you’ve already seen them is really annoying. I know you can disable them completely but then if I ever run into a new ending or midway point for a dlc mission I’d miss out on a new one.

And chance of this changing?

### 5/5 — For the love of Cthulhu, let us skip cutscenes

*2018-10-30, version 1.5.0*

Otherwise, the best game on iOS. Period

### 4/5 — Good but hard

*2018-07-26, version 1.5.0*

I love this game, don’t get me wrong. But the chances of winning are about one to a million. I never played the board game and I don’t know if it's that hard, but I feel there should be a way to better customize the level of difficulty for each monster. Other than that, the graphics are beautiful, the atmosphere delightfully gloomy and it doesn’t crash anymore. Good game overall, but be prepared to get frustrated with the amount of loosing.

### 3/5 — Used to be 5 star but now has a major flaw

*2018-05-28, version 1.5.0*

I thought this app when it first came out and was one of my firm favourites until the 64 bit upgrade. Since then you are forced to sit through the introduction video every time you start the game, which gets very tedious.

Would it be possibility to have the ability to skip this again, please??

Aside major glitch aside, Elder Signs is still a fantastic app.

### 4/5 — Fantastic

*2018-02-11, version 1.5.0*

In all seriousness, this is one of my favorite iOS ports of a tabletop game in existence. It gives a nice taste of the mythos, and provides just enough of a challenge to still be fun.

If I were to offer one criticism, however, I must say I miss being able to skip cutscenes. I don’t want to have to sit through that long intro every time I play.

### 5/5 — More expansions please

*2017-10-16, version 1.5.0*

Love this game I need to get the physical copy next. I own quite a few Fantasy Flight Games. Thanks for updating to 64bit.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Desperately needs a tutorial

*2023-03-19, version 1.5.0*

I want to like this game but as is it is unplayable. The instructions/help are useless. The developer needs to add a tutorial. I've tried half a dozen games and have absolutely no clue how to even play.

### 1/5 — Rp game

*2021-10-13, version 1.5.0*

Waste of money!

### 1/5 — Play Balance?

*2021-07-12, version 1.5.0*

Way back when the Earth was still cooling game designers had a concept called play balance, with the goal of making the game challenging and interesting without being frustrating. Apparently those days are gone. This game is too random, like a Vegas slot machine, with advanced challenges thrown at the player at any level and often in the very first turn. The result is that you can have a lot of experience with the game and think through every move and still get sandbagged early. Not fun. Been a Mythos fan since the age of ten.

### 1/5 — If you haven’t played the physical game, do not buy this!

*2020-01-04, version 1.5.0*

This app is one of the worst board game adaptations I’ve ever seen. No tutorial, no tool tips, really no indication that the ‘glyphs’ you ‘summon’ are dice being rolled. No convenient reference showing which dice have how many of each result. I had to read about 20 pages of digital rule book to even guess at how to use the UI, and even then, things like items you can buy in the shop appear as plain icons with no text description of what they do until after you buy them. Really wanted to like this game, and have given it multiple tries.

### 1/5 — No, absolutely not fun

*2018-04-11, version 1.5.0*

I like the Cthulhu mythos and normally enjoy these types of games, but definitely despise this game. The slot machine quality of gameplay on normal difficulty felt rigged in a weak effort at simulating the kind of challenging play that is traditional to games in the mythos genre; I did not bother to experience the undoubtedly more extreme rigging that must take place at higher difficulties. Wow, am I disgruntled over the wasted money on this fraudulent experience. Thankfully I didn’t throw away any more on in-game expansions. 👎

### 1/5 — Too difficult

*2017-05-04, version 1.4.3*

Way too hard. Removes all the enjoyment of playing to constantly have the dice stacked against you. Shame, the board ham version is fun

### 1/5 — Please rename this "roll dice and lose."

*2017-03-31, version 1.4.3*

Frustrating. Good luck completing any tasks. And the tutorials are just videos.

### 1/5 — Game is insanely difficult and requires no skill.

*2016-08-21, version 1.4.3*

This game has lots of potential and could be extremely fun if it weren't impossible to win. It is about luck, and the dice are stacked against you. There is no benefit it repeatedly playing the game (no extras unlocked). I am all for a hard game, but this game takes it way to far. Especially since it requires pure luck to win and not strategy.

### 1/5 — Not a RPG

*2013-09-28, version 1.3.7*

Not a RPG, people.
Very disappointed as I loved the other COC RPGs apps.
Very expensive for what it really is.

### 1/5 — In principal an OK game but

*2012-12-14, version 1.2.3*

The odds seem so completely stacked against the player as to make the game no fun at all. I will soon give up and delete it.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Beautiful and immersive

*2024-08-06, version 1.5.0*

This a beautiful adaptation of an excellent Yahtzee style dice game. When I started playing, I got very frustrated because it didn’t seem like there was any strategy to the game. Also I lost a lot. Soon though, you learn strategies for party selection, who should be sent to certain locations and when, and how to manage the dice and the items/clues. It’s quite fun. If you’ve played the physical game, there are some differences. For instance, in the physical game you can replace an investigator who is dead or insane. In the app, you cannot. The expansions aren’t implemented in the app quite like the IRL ones but they’re quite good for all that. Just different. Not that I wouldn’t love those IRL expansions, but it’s an old app and what you see is what you get. Hopefully you also will get, and like.

### 5/5 — Consistently a go-to

*2023-12-21, version 1.5.0*

I love this game. I love the physical version of the game. They’re about 80% the same game, so don’t expect a direct 1-for-1. That being said, I’ve put hundreds of hours into this app, and I find everything from the UI to gameplay veeeeery good and satisfying. One of my favorite board game apps, hands-down.

### 5/5 — Excellent game

*2023-12-18, version 1.5.0*

Dripping with atmosphere! A great balance between luck and skill. The difficulty ramps up until by the final elder God it feels almost impossible, but with persistence it can be beaten.

### 5/5 — Outstanding

*2023-09-29, version 1.5.0*

Elder Sign is my favorite IPad game ever since it came out.

### 5/5 — Outstanding

*2023-08-19*

Elder Sign is my favorite IPad game ever since it came out.

### 5/5 — My favorite iPad game

*2022-07-13, version 1.5.0*

Love this game, I’ve been playing it since it came out.

### 5/5 — Absolutely perfect game!!!

*2021-09-22, version 1.5.0*

I really enjoyed playing it on iPad. During these 3 days Since the time of purchase, I have played it nearly a hundred times. It is really addicting. I am definitely going to buy the physical game as well.

### 5/5 — Busted by iPadOS 14.2

*2021-04-23, version 1.5.0*

I dearly love this game ... but since the 14.2 update, it fails to open. Sure hope it gets fixed.

[ edit 4/2021: it works again after Apple updated the app’s signature! Doesn’t seem like FFG lifted a finger, but anyway I’m back to being happy. ]

### 5/5 — Still one of the best board game adaptions

*2021-03-29, version 1.5.0*

After many years, I still keep coming back to play this. The difficult level is hard, but that’s good - you keep coming back for more! Background music is excellent and it’s simply a nice little game.

Wish there was more content available but doubt it will ever happen! Recommended.

### 5/5 — Super tense board game with great production

*2020-08-14, version 1.5.0*

I got hooked on this a couple of years ago. Recently started playing again, and you guessed it - hooked again! The margins of success are tight and you need to take some risks, assessing your probability of success. The art is lovely and overall the conversion has been handled really well. Big thumbs up!
