Element X gives you fast, secure and private instant messaging and video calls built on Matrix, the open standard for real-time communication. This is a free and open-source app maintained at https://github.com/element-hq/element-x-ios

Choose where to host your data - from any public server (the largest free server is matrix.org, but there are plenty of others to choose from) to creating your own personal server and hosting it on your own domain. This ability to choose a server is a large part of what differentiates us from other real time communication apps. However you host, you have ownership; it’s your data. You’re not the product. You’re in control.

Setting calls on self-hosted synapse server can’t be done at all. No guides, nothing, and always the same missing_matrix_rtc_transport. I hate this app

Cant make account or home server changes after initial log in. Some dark patterns where the app remembers details despite deleting the app and reinstalling. So if you change anything you’re literally stuck.

You for some reason need a VPN to just open the app, all of my antivirus give me multiple warnings (I have 3)  I doubt this has any privacy whatsoever. No hate to the devs, I like the app layout, but atleast make a real app. Not trustable.

Element and the team behind it have become largely non-functional over the past several months. It feels like the goal has become to take a very useable piece of technology and systematically reduce the user experience until simple tasks cause considerable hair loss. I can no longer perform the simple task of verifying a device against another.

I’ve reported this. No response, no resolution. In just a few weeks you won’t be able to use an unverified device.

Time to look for a new messaging platform.

The weather in Europe is hot hot hot, but nothing’s as hot as this latest release of Element X! Version 26.08.2 is now available with a focus on quality-of-life improvements:

• We've reduced the number of steps to select your server when signing in.
• The app now remembers your previous server(s) making it quicker to sign in again.
• There's one less step to view a user's avatar from the timeline.
• Calls are more reliable on Max sized phones and more efficient on all devices.
• Read receipts should be more reliable when resuming the app.

This version provides a hotfix for an issue that might have prevented some messages to get received.
Plus it also includes some improvements in previewing and displaying gallery messages.

Good news everyone!

This new version of Element X brings you support for gallery messages, so you can finally visualise and preview multiple aggregated media in your timeline.
We also added a timeline item to display if there is an active call alongside support for user presence (if your homeserver supports this feature).

It also improves stability by fixing a crash that happened when trying to download a media.

Version 26.07.4 is now available with a handful of small changes including:

• Calls will always be shown using dark mode.
• A fix for a bug that prevented you from opening chats under certain offline conditions.
