### 5/5 — Best kickstarter app for beginners

*2017-09-08, version 2.0*

I appreciate this app. The material challenged me but was presented well for learning. The quizzes and charts and tables and exercise tool are brilliant. It's a great app to come back to for refreshers and when you've forgotten something. Out of the dozens of apps I've looked at and of all the apps I've ever bought this one is one of the tops for delivering value.

PS years later, I'm still enjoying it. Thank you.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2017-04-19, version 2.0*

I am total beginner and this is a nice little app. I assume it's quite different for pros but for the beginner this is a priceless tool!

### 5/5 — Useful and practical app for basic photographic fundamentals

*2017-03-15, version 2.0*

Quite useful and friendly app summarising the basic and fundamentals aspects of photography
Well recommended

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2017-01-15, version 2.0*

As a Videographer it's a whole diffrent story going from just that to photography. This app teaches you everything you need to know plus some super handy tips for people already in the game. Very handy and props to the creator you made something people who care about learning can use and even look back on anytime they like for the 3 dollars it is well worth it.

### 5/5 — EXACTLY what I need!!!

*2016-08-28, version 2.0*

I've wanted to get into photography but the technical aspect has always intimidated me. Now that I just bought my first dslr, I have no choice but to learn. This app gives straight forward concise definitions of each concept and then provides really good examples. Many of the examples even include sub-examples. E.g.: when showing you the effect of changes to ISO it provides the same image taken with four diff ISOs, allowing you to actually *see* what ISO means in practice.

I'm only through a couple of the units but I've learned so much already. If you're new to photography, this app is a must have.

### 5/5 — 5 stars!

*2016-06-20, version 2.0*

Love the layout of the app and the visual examples so you not only read but see perfectly good examples of what you're reading so the information sticks better to your brain.

### 5/5 — Amateur

*2016-02-28, version 2.0*

Makes anyone take great photos.
Photography course on your phone..

### 5/5 — A must for first time users!

*2015-12-17, version 2.0*

This app places technical jargon in easy to comprehend advice. The interactive shots really allow for people to understand how the different controls affect their photos while keeping the language short yet effective.

### 5/5 — Useful

*2015-11-23, version 2.0*

This app helps clarify the basics of getting nice photos. Very happy to have it at my fingertips when using a camera.

### 5/5 — Outstanding App!!!

*2015-11-03, version 2.0*

This app is truly great. Informative and entertaining!!!!

### 5/5 — Great app

*2015-08-22, version 2.0*

Easy to use & teaches you entry level photography tricks .

### 5/5 — Nice first step

*2015-06-19, version 2.0*

Must say that I have found everything I need as first step into world of photography

### 5/5 — Excellent depth for the hungry novice.

*2015-06-10, version 2.0*

This goes beyond the typical beginner lessons elsewhere. Instead of the same old "don't shoot in auto" this interactive app teaches the fundamentals of exposure, light, lenses, when to do this or that, how to understand histograms, bracketing, and depth of field in one of the easiest explanations I've seen yet. It even has an introduction to flash photography and how it works.

Couple charts for EV table, DOF calculator, and quizzes on the information learned.

Well worth buying if you're serious and tired of hunting across the web just to find articles that teach in a million different ways what a million different people think is the correct way.

### 5/5 — Great Visual Photography Tutorial

*2015-04-20, version 2.0*

This app is great for explaining and re-explaining everything you need to understand to get started (or brush up on, or expand) in photography. As you manipulate on-screen simulated camera controls, the background picture changes to show the resulting effect on the resulting photo. Great job!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Not great.

*2020-07-28, version 3.0*

It alright, until you open the exposure chart and there’s no back button, so you are stuck, and have to trash the app and then reload it to get back home. Makes me want my money back!

### 2/5 — App 2 times charged

*2020-03-20, version 3.0*

Hi, recently I bought “The elements of photography” app and I don’t really know why you charged 2 times. Please I need you help me with this inconvenience.
Thank you.

### 2/5 — In-app purchases not available

*2019-11-20, version 3.0*

I really liked the basics 1 tutorial. I can see that the rest of the i formation available would be very useful. However, in-app purchases will not work. It keeps telling me they are not available. What good does that do? Looks like I’ll have to look elsewhere. Bummer!

### 3/5 — Good but froze me

*2019-10-26, version 3.0*

I liked the app but when I finally purchased it I used some of the features. But I opened the Ev table chart and it froze. I could not get back to the home page. So my only recourse was to delete the app. Then I went out and downloaded it again but it was locked and wanted me to pay again. I am not going to pay twice but I really liked it.

### 4/5 — Awesome teacher

*2016-05-18, version 2.0*

I got my camera about a week ago and haven't taken any classes prior and I feel like I have a pretty decent understanding of photography from this app alone. Only gave it a 4 star because it has some empty slides every once in awhile

### 4/5 — Worth three bucks

*2015-08-22, version 2.0*

A pocket full of information as a quick reference is always a good thing. If you need to learn the most basic stuff the free version is all you'll need, but paying for the full unlock is really worth the quiz refreshers and the DoF/EV guides.

Four stars, this app is incredibly smart and shiny until you pay for the unlock, then what you will get feels unrefined and incomplete. There are whole slides that are blank, and poor English that needs editing.

As for the content, the most confusing parts of photography are explained and your understanding of them is tested with a simple "you got is right, or not" check system, and a help button to point you to the correct part of the guide. This makes it easy to see where your weaknesses are and what you'll need to go over before that next shoot.

I'd hope for updates that fix the small issues and add more content like the use of polarizing filters, intentional lens flares or when to use a hood, ND for waterfall shots, etc. for more of the creative processes that people might expect in a hide like this.

Overall this is a good addition to your arsenal, and I'd recommend this app to everyone, beginner to professional.

### 4/5 — Very helpful

*2015-01-03, version 2.0*

This app is very helpful for beginners like myself. I believe the content is explained well and it gives good examples of the concepts. It is definitely worth the 2.99 in my opinion. I didn't give it 5 starts because I noticed while gong through the lessons a couple of the pages were blank where text should've been. Other than that, it's great!

### 4/5 — Good Basic Intro

*2014-08-08, version 2.0*

This is a good basic distillation of what you find in most good photo-technique guides but in easily found form. Nice charts on EV values and calculator for figuring depth of field.

### 4/5 — Excellent!

*2013-12-13, version 2.0*

Excellent explanation of the basics of photography. This app makes everything easy to understand. Sometimes freezes though and I have to shut down phone or re-download app.

### 4/5 — Great App for beginners!

*2013-09-02, version 2.0*

This is a great app for beginners who need to understand the basic concepts of photography. Offers good photography tips. I have not finished reading the entire guide, but this looks good to teach any good beginner some photography lessons.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Good app for beginners

*2022-09-01, version 3.0*

I like the app so far but when I went into purchasing all of the features the app wouldn’t let me do so. I keep getting a message with a failed attempt with a suggestion to check my internet connection. I’ve tried closing the app several times, restarting the phone but nothing has worked thus far. Any suggestions?

### 5/5 — Informative

*2021-03-09, version 3.0*

Great information, easy to understand.

### 5/5 — Great App! A must have app for beginner photographers

*2021-01-02, version 3.0*

I love this app! It explains the basics of photography in an easy to understand format and includes interactive graphics that enhance learning. It goes beyond my expectations. As a beginning photographer, I'm glad I can take this app with me on my phone for reference when needed. Above all, I believe when I complete all the lessons, I will not only be more knowledgeable about photography but I will be equipped to use that knowledge in real life photography situations.

### 5/5 — Professional photographer 6yrs

*2018-03-30, version 3.0*

This is the most detailed app for beginner photographers.I bought just to see how accurate it was it is dead on. I would give this app a perfect 10 if rating would allow so if you are a beginner photographer I would buy this app it would help you out more then any other app I have downloaded.

*2018-03-02, version 3.0*

This is a fantastic program for beginner photographers easy learning with visual aspects as well as easy to follow prompts I love this and have learned more in basic 1 thank hours and hours of watching videos definitely recommend. I was also having difficulty trying to get the in app purchase to go thru I finally wound up just rebooting my phone as it kept saying my purchase was cancelled and was able to get the purchase complete this was a problem apparently on my end so FYI your getting a message error saying purchase cancelled just reboot and try again.

### 5/5 — Greatest Photography Reference On The Go

This app is an incredible reference for all things camera. It’s been amazing to read and see all of the technical things broken down so that I can understand them easier.
