### 3/5 — Excellent elk calling info but run like a side hustle not a professional app

*2025-08-22, version 3.2.1*

Have had this for a couple years now. The content is great - I find it educational. The code needs some improvement, especially related to downloading content for use offline. The downloaded content no longer works offline. When I emailed for help, I got a half-hearted response that did not resolve the issue and then crickets. Given how much time I spend out of service in prep for and during season, not being able to access the content diminishes the app’s value.

### 2/5 — I love the elk nut but

*2025-08-19, version 3.2.1*

For years they have not addressed the offline download issues

I download all the data pre season and I get out to the wilderness and it doesn’t freakin work.

I even refresh all data which is an option they have and put it on airplane mode. Doesn’t work.

### 1/5 — Bait and switch

*2022-12-12, version 3.2.1*

I purchased this app this year, and now I can’t use it because it’s a subscription service that they want me to pay an additional $14.99 a year for. Rip off!

### 1/5 — Not happy

*2022-10-08, version 3.2*

Purchased Elk Nut from the App Store to get ready for 2022 elk season. Great information I was starting to process. Had it for about a month and they shut down the app to restructure. Haven’t been able to use since. Don’t answered my emails.

### 1/5 — Bad update

*2022-10-04, version 3.1*

Please get your act together on this new app. It was beautiful and worked perfectly before. Now it is unusable. Videos won’t play, wrong content shows through. Paul is a great guy! Developers, please get you act together. I will be canceling my subscription until you can get your act together and get a app that works. Thanks.

### 2/5 — Change to subscription right after purchase and right in the middle of the season??!

*2022-10-04, version 3.1*

Bought for $10.00 and downloaded a few weeks ago for this archery elk season (September 2022). I go to use it at camp on a hunt and I discover it's changed to a subscription model and won't work without signing up. Ok... The app gives me an option to get a free year of the subscription, since I already recently bought it. Great! Except you have to fill out a form and email them, and they are supposed to get back to you. Ok... Did it... WEEKS AGO! No reply since. Archery season came and went. Still no reply. That's absolutely terrible timing on your part, changing to a subscription model right in the middle of the season. So it didn't come in handy for the season. I still can't use it. And IF I ever do get that free year, it will have expired by next season anyway. Paul's videos online are second-to-none. But changing the app payment structure during the season and not getting back to people who just bought it? Really disappointed.

### 1/5 — Not up front before updating app

*2022-09-28, version 3.1*

I agree with everyone else writing 1 star reviews. Every other app I’ve ever purchased, I still have access to. When I purchased this one for $9.99 it didn’t say anything about expiring or subscription. I go to use it for the second time and they want me to pay annually now… I understand the business standpoint… however, you have to understand the frustration with your customers and the lack of transparency.

### 3/5 — Why the switch to yearly subscription

*2022-09-25, version 3.1*

This was hands down the best elk hunting app and probably still is but I’m not paying 25$ a year for something that was free for the last 3. All this info is available for free on the dozens of podcasts Paul has been on.

### 1/5 — Dishonest elk nut

*2022-09-22, version 3.0*

I bought this app a few weeks told it was a one time 9.99 purchase. Great value I thought and the content was good. But just a few weeks later and I can’t access the app as now it’s a subscription. I have sent a claim for the free year with no response. If a man is not good on his word what is he good for. I guess I bit the bullet and kiss my ten bucks good bye, payment for a few things I learned off Paul’s videos. But I’m done with the ElkNut.

### 1/5 — Review was removed

*2022-09-20, version 3.0*

I wrote a review last week and my review somehow got removed. Either way I find this app terrible. Complete bait and switch. I purchased this app 3 years ago and had full access. Now it is no longer available. The fact that this was done during elk season also goes to show the ethics of the company. It would have been in the company’s best interest to provide an elk nut and elk nut pro. I would’ve been interested in purchasing the pro version if elk nut hadn’t taken away what was already purchased. Poor business practice.

### 1/5 — Bait and switch

*2022-09-20, version 3.0*

Sold the app for one price to access the content and then blocked access to it and demanded more money. Bad business.

### 1/5 — The new app is garbage

*2022-09-19, version 3.0*

I bought the old app in July and used it almost daily getting ready for my archery hunt. I when out Labor Day weekend and the old app worked great as a field reference. Then when I got back in service the app updated and I lost all of my old content. They said I could get a free or discounted subscription but couldn’t get it to work so I ended up paying $14 for the annual sub. I downloaded content for off line usage, and when I went back to the mountains the new app wasn’t opening up the calls and sequences tab. THIS APP DOES NOT WORK IF YOU DON’T HAVE SERVICE! It is pretty useless now, and I’m upset they got money hungry and changed it right as hunting season started and screwed up my field reference guide that I had already paid for and they charged me again for and inferior untested app. Good content but garbage app.

### 3/5 — Bought app few years ago

*2022-09-16, version 3.0*

I love the app and bought the app a few years ago. They changed the app and now have to pay every year instead of the one time. Very disappointed that this is the route that was taken. I talked this app up to many friends who purchased the app the same way I did until they updated and make you pay every year.

### 1/5 — Had access less than a month

*2022-09-16, version 3.0*

Bought the app for$9.99 about a month ago because it was a one time purchase. Good content but when I went to refer back to it out in a hunt had lost access. Now it’s a subscription. That’s not what I paid for and only got a month out of it. I have hunted my whole life and was willing to pay 9.99 to see if I could pick up any tips, but not annually. Suggest you change back to one time purchase. I am seeing seeing, and agreeing with, the recent reviews that are not happy with change.

### 1/5 — Theft

*2022-09-16, version 3.0*

Taking peoples content that they already paid for is theft

### 1/5 — App practically taken away from paying customers

*2022-09-15, version 3.0*

Paid for app just last year, only to have previously available features taken away for a “subscription model”. Very disappointing.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Subscription is BS

*2026-07-02, version 3.2.1*

This app was originally advertised as a 1 time fee. $10 to get the app and all updates would be free no subscription necessary. Now they’ve completely backed out on that and made it subscription only to access features that used to be free. That’s total BS. Now I’ve lost a significant amount of the information I used to have access to, unless I want to pay $15/year. Come on guys, do better

### 1/5 — Liar

*2026-06-23, version 3.2.1*

When I subscribed Paul said it would be a set price for life, now he wants more money on his ElkNut app.

### 1/5 — Recordings still don’t work/Where are all my practice recordings

*2025-09-19, version 3.2.1*

Edit review/ you can only record practice calls if connected to internet. I suspect this is because of the microphone on iPhones use your location information if granted permission I wonder why they need your location for such things. It’s all about selling your info to the marketing scum of the earth corporations/Second review still cannot use practice recording feature I was one of original suckers to pay for this app before they ruined it and tried to rip off there customers and now the app is useless for its original intended purpose/
Updated app and lost all my recorded bugles. This was the primary reason why I purchased the app. Now I have lost all me and my sons so much for keeping track of our progression. Not happy.

### 1/5 — shady business practices

*2024-09-17, version 3.2.1*

I tried this app in 2022. Paid the fee and after a few weeks decided it was not for me. I cancelled my membership but never received any sort of confirmation email.

Today, two years later, I saw they are still trying to charge me an annual fee! No email was sent notifying me of this for obvious reasons. I only have one email ever from gotgametech and that was from the original transaction in 2022.

### 1/5 — Greedy update

*2024-08-13, version 3.2.1*

Purchased this app in 2020 under the pretenses that all content wild be available for a one time purchase. I come back to the app for a pre season refresher, and his best sequences are now locked behind another paywall. It is advertised that only new content added after 2022 is behind the paywall, but these same sequences used to be available after purchasing the app. Absolutely greed, and taking away a product that I already purchased once.

### 1/5 — Pro Doesn’t Work No Support

*2024-08-05, version 3.2.1*

I purchased the Pro version but cannot access the Pro features. Essentially I still have the free version but paid for it. I called the original owner and it has been sold so he can no longer help in support. No response from the company that now owns it. Wasted $14

### 1/5 — Scam, beware

*2024-08-02, version 3.2.1*

Beware that what you pay for may be changed at any time and you may be asked for more money,

Many people, including me, bought the lifetime subscription only to have it deleted off our phones and we now have to pay again. The only explanation was he set the price too low and changed his mind

Dishonest , buy at your own risk.

### 1/5 — Where are all my practice recordings

*2023-07-06, version 3.2.1*

Updated app and lost all my recorded bugles. This was the primary reason why I purchased the app. Now I have lost all me and my sons so much for keeping track of our progression. Not happy.

### 1/5 — What a joke

*2023-02-05, version 3.2.1*

Bought this app, it was great for about a month, then i couldn’t access any of the content without having to create an account and pay a subscription.
I recall hearing a podcast paul spoke on, he said “I would never charge anything for this Information” and the original one time payment for the app was only to cover some production costs.
At one time I would’ve given this a 5 star rating, pretty disappointed with it now, just wish I didn’t waste my money to begin with.
Go find a podcast at least it’s subscription free.

### 1/5 — Thieves

*2022-12-15, version 3.2.1*

They upgraded their app to an annual subscription and those of us that purchased it prior to that lost access to the product we paid for and they don’t have the decency to respond to the complaint I made.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2024-10-07, version 3.2.1*

I got drawn for the elk lottery this year and didn’t know anything about elk. Never even seen one in real life. Thanks to this app I was able to work this bull in. It took almost 2 hours of intense calling and without this app I wouldn’t have known what he was trying to say, how to respond to get a reaction out of him, how my response is supposed to sound. All this. This app helped a rookie solo elk hunter but a tag on the antler of the first elk to be harvested in Minnesota with a crossbow. After almost 2 hours I was able to call him in to 25 yards before I took the shot. Highly reccomend.

### 5/5 — Disappointing

*2024-08-26, version 3.2.1*

I bought this app and was happy with what it taught me. I was very disappointed that Paul changed the app to a yearly subscription. I will never buy this app again. For Paul to cancel what I bought and make me buy it again yearly. Not a chance will I ever buy anything from him again. Update… all the information I purchased is working again Thanks

### 5/5 — Loved it - Hated it - Love it

*2023-09-02, version 3.2.1*

Purchased this app years ago through a single purchase payment. They changed it to a subscription based app and blocked my access. I sent an email explaining my frustration and they offered to refund my original purchase but I declined and parted ways with Elk Nut. They’ve since returned the content first provided to individuals who did the one time purchase and I’m very thankful. Great app and great content, but poor customer experience.

### 5/5 — Thanks for listening!!!

*2022-10-08, version 3.2*

Paul you came through!!!!… you made the app even better. Thanks for listening to the community and making the old still available. You’ve now created a way to entice those that Matt have not wanted a subscription with new bells and whistles!

### 5/5 — Hear them out on changing to subscription

*2022-09-14, version 3.0*

I have had this app for two years and it has helped my husband and I significantly with our calls and learning about elk communication. I have told my husband that it was crazy they only charged 10 dollars for the amount of information the app contained.

I was bummed when I saw it was moving to subscription, but I reached out to them, they responded promptly, and they explained that it was a very difficult decision. There are only 5 guys working on this app.

The amount of work, thought, and years of experience and education put into this app is definitely worth 15 dollars a year. And that certainly isn’t going to be enough to provide an income for any of them.

All we see are the videos and the calls in the app. We don’t know the time, cost, and effort that is required behind the scenes to have the app run smoothly and give us all of this awesome information.

The new update runs seamlessly and it’s apparent a lot of thought was put into this decision. Love seeing new tips, tactics, and sequences, too. The information put out in this app is unmatched and worth it. These guys are hunters just like we are. Don’t give them a bad review just because they are trying to figure out a way to keep making this app better for us.

Thank you guys for taking the time out of your lives to give us this great app!

### 5/5 — Worth it

*2022-07-21, version 2.0.5*

Good for practicing your elk calls. Listening to different calls and mimicking them has been very beneficial to my elk calling. Also like to read the break downs on when to use each call and what they can mean when you hear them in the field

### 5/5 — Best out there, fraction of the cost

*2022-06-19, version 2.0.5*

I’ve gone through the other well known elk apps and training sessions. They cost way more and none of them provide a coherent calling strategy like the Elk Nut does. Total novice on my first trip, after a few months of practice with the app I went to a DIY public land run of the mill unit and called in 18 bulls within bow range in 4-1/2 days of hunting using elk nut calling sequences. Had my pick of the litter, the average bull success rate in that unit that year (hindsight) was 4% and my buddy and I both had our pick of the litter. Our success rates of bringing a given bull into bow range was extremely high. I’ve now got confidence to hunt and kill elk anywhere.

### 5/5 — Game CHANGER!

*2021-09-02, version 2.0.5*

Beginning to learn about hunting elk can be tough, there are thousands of resources whether it be books or online. If you want a ONE STOP SHOP for learning to call elk and the learn WHY you need to call at certain times, then the ElkNut app is for you. Most likely in the last week you have spent more then the cost of the app at a gas station or grocery store, so stop debating if you need it... because you do!

### 5/5 — Unreal amount of content.

*2021-05-16, version 2.0.5*

Couldn’t believe the amount of information within the app, from the tactics to sounds this app has everything any new or old elk hunter needs.

### 5/5 — Great tactics!

*2020-10-20, version 2.0.5*

The tips and tactics are spot on. I have rifle hunted elk for years but am new to archery hunting and had to change my whole approach. Tips on how to setup and the different sequences helped me to harvest an elk in one of SD’s toughest units to arrow an elk.

Thanks!!
