## What is Ember?

Ember is a journal that remembers your people.

Write about your day. Mention someone once, and every moment you share gathers on their page. Years from now, open it and everything you lived together is there, in your own words. A life archive, kept by you.

No account. No AI. Just open Ember and write.

MENTION THEM ONCE
• Type @ and a name. That moment now belongs to them, and to you.
• Everyone gets a page: how you met, the stories you share, every moment you wrote down.
• Worlds for the circles you move in (family, work, college) and stories for chapters that span years.
• Bring people in from Apple Contacts, with birthdays and details intact.

IT COMES BACK TO YOU
• The Feed brings back moments you had almost forgotten, on the right day: a year since you met, a story from last summer.
• When someone you care about has been quiet too long, they gently surface. No streaks. No guilt.

YOUR LIFE, ON A MAP
• The Map shows where every memory happened: entries, stories and people.
• On Mac and iPad, the Graph shows everyone at once, gathered into the worlds you share.

BRING YOUR OLD JOURNALS
• Import from Day One and Apple Journal, with your photos, video and audio.
• Ember finds the people already in your old entries, so years of writing gather on their pages.

WRITE THE WAY YOU ALWAYS HAVE
• Markdown, photos, voice memos, and songs from Apple Music.
• Weather is added for you. Places only when you choose.
• Themes, fonts and line spacing to make it feel like yours.

SEND THEM THE MEMORY
• Turn a moment into a card for the people in it, or keep a story as a PDF keepsake.
• Nothing is hosted. You choose what to send, and to whom.

YOURS ALONE
• Local-first: your journal lives on your device.
• Lock it with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
• Sync is private, through your own iCloud.
• Export everything, anytime, as an open, documented archive.
• No AI. Ember never reads, writes or summarizes a word of your journal.

ON IPHONE, IPAD AND MAC
One archive, wherever you write. ⌘K searches everything on Mac and iPad.

EMBER PLUS
Ember is free, with no limit on what you write. Ember Plus adds:
• iCloud sync across your iPhone, iPad and Mac
• The full theme catalogue
Available monthly with a 1-week free trial, yearly with a 2-week free trial, or as a lifetime purchase.

Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel anytime in your App Store account settings.

### 5/5 — Finally, a journal that remembers your people

*2026-10-20*

Ember is a really neat, unique app that I feel is a cross between a journal and a personal CRM. When you write about someone, the entry goes onto their profile, so you can scroll back through every moment you've shared or written about them in order. I've tried a lot of journal apps. I'm an avid pen-and-paper journaler, but paper can't show you the big picture over time. Ember can.

What I love:
- Individual contact profiles. Each profile shows the exact date of the last time we talked. As someone with a neurodivergent brain, that makes it much easier to see who I'm overdue to catch up with, especially with the Nudge tab.
- Custom fields. For example, I track gender, orientation, and relationship status for every contact, plus anniversary if I know it.
- Worlds. They let me sort people into different areas of my life, and I can draw connections between people.
- Cross-device sync. I started on my Mac, but I couldn't log things from the couch or my bed. I bought the annual subscription for iCloud sync, and being able to log on my phone made it worth it. You also get pretty themes!
- No AI. Nothing can read my private entries or generate text from them, which is how a journal app should work. I hope it stays that way, because I'd have to reconsider my support if that changed.

What could use improvement:
- Setup was a bit arduous. I tweaked everything to my liking, spent about a week backlogging interactions and journal entries from major events in my relationships, adding pictures from my photos archive, and also had to learn the UI which is a little counterintuitive sometimes.
- Some features are hard to find. You have to tap the paperclip icon in the upper right corner of the Journal entries tab to show your follow-up entries that are attached to interactions. At first I was confused where all of those disappeared to! Also, additional communication methods from the default options have to be added in settings manually. (I actually submitted a feature request before finding that, then took it down.)
- Entry types are a bit confusing. It took me a while to understand how stories, journal entries, and interaction follow-ups differ. Only stories and journal entries show up in a contact's Together tab, so I sometimes log something twice to get it on both the Together tab and the interactions timeline. This is because the little pdfs or cards you can generate for contacts only really pull from that Together tab, so if I want those visuals I have to add photos in journal or story entries.
- Documentation is a bit sparse. Better manuals and tutorials would help a lot! But I understand the dev works alone and it’s time consuming to create resources.

Wishlist
- Less lag. Stories with many photos can lag to the point it has crashed the app on my Mac.
- Presence ratings. I rarely know how present the other person was, so I leave the star ratings at default. A rating for how I felt about the interaction overall would be more useful. The developer promptly answered my feature request and told me interaction tags were planned, so that we can log our own emotions related to each interaction, which I look forward to!

Summary

The app is built and maintained by one developer who is responsive and clearly passionate about it. I'm surprised Ember doesn't have more users, but I guess I too found it randomly on Reddit serendipitously. So far, I’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of it in just a week. Most features are free, and it's one of the few apps I think is worth paying for nowadays. I recommend it to anyone who likes data, journaling, or keeping up with the people in their life. I even use it for tracking penpal letters!

### 5/5 — The journal I didn’t know I needed!

*2026-10-12*

Really love that when I write about my day and tag someone, it gets saved to their page on its own, so all our moments end up together. It’s also nice that there’s no account or AI involved which makes it feel like a truly private place to write.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4.0 — 2026-10-25

What's new in Ember 1.4

• Calendar: your life by day. Each day shows its photo, what you wrote and the stories that began on it, with birthdays, the days you met and anniversaries named on their day. Tap a day to read it or to write about it. Upcoming lists the dates of the next twelve months. On iPhone it is in Browse; on iPad, in the sidebar under Life.
• Custom fields can be dates. Make a field such as "Wedding" a date and it comes round on the Calendar every year, with how many years it has been. For a day that happened once, such as a move, turn off "Comes round every year". Dates from Contacts come in as dates.
• Filter a person's interactions by tag. The tag picker lists the tags you use most.
• Presence starts unrated when you log an interaction, so only the ratings you give are saved.
• Memory cards and A book of us now include the follow-ups you wrote on an interaction.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-10-24

What's new in Ember 1.3

• Search finds the words in your photos. Type a word from a letter, a card, a ticket or a menu, and the entry or story with that photo comes up. It opens at the photo with the words marked. Ember reads your photos on your device, and photos you added before updating are read in the background.
• Entries with lots of photos open faster and scroll more smoothly.
• On a person's page, tap someone under Connections to go to their page. To change the dates of a connection or end it, touch and hold it.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-10-16

What's new in Ember 1.2

• Templates: turn any entry into a template, then start new entries from it. The entry stays in your journal, templates live under the Bin, and a blank entry offers them right on the date line.
• Tag your interactions with words of your own. Each person's page counts the tags you've used with them.
• The tag picker fits its list, and on iPhone it opens as a full sheet.
• The Graph holds still. Past 300 people, each world folds the rest into a bubble you can tap to open.
• iPad: the sidebar floats instead of docking, and in portrait the journal selector sits above your entries.
• The Map shows its pins as soon as it opens, and you can drag the spinning globe.
• Fixes, including an iPad layout that could cut off the edge of every screen.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-10-10

What's new in Ember 1.1

• iPhone Duo: open it up and Ember opens with it. Journal and People sit side by side, and the entry you're writing stays open when you fold it.
• A new welcome: start with a few starter notes, pick up your library from iCloud, or bring your journals from Day One, Apple Journal or an Ember backup.
• Search shows why each result matched, and looks through your whole archive.
• Person pages: jump to any month on a time rail, see everything you share in Together, and add your own fields.
• The Map gathers photos into small stacks, and the globe turns.
• Widgets: a New Entry circle, and Reach Out follows each world's nudge setting.
• Imports from Day One, Apple Journal and Contacts tell you what they skipped.
• Sync: deletes you make offline now reach iCloud, and Ember asks before it syncs with a different Apple ID.
• Many fixes, including a crash when saving some stories as PDF and a crash on the Map.
