## What is Enciclopedia dell'Arte?

The Enciclopedia dell'Arte Zanichelli drives you throughout figures, movements, genres, and techniques of visual arts and architecture of any age, from cave painting to video art. The list of 10.000 entries includes biographies of painters, sculptors, architects, designers, together with illustrators, photographers, tapestry-weavers, ebonists, and other minor art figures; from universally known figures like Michelangelo, Rembrandt or Picasso, up to the most recent forms of art expression and to young artists from the four corners of the Earth; the headword list includes art collectors, critics, theorists and historians, together with the profiles of the main museums, galleries, and art magazines.

The app's interface has been redesigned to provide a simpler and more intuitive experience. You can swipe the definitions to the right to return to the search results and improve the readability by pinching the text with two fingers to zoom in and out. In addition, you can tap on any word within the definitions and look it up directly in the dictionary without having to type it into the search box. A main menu that can be activated via an icon available at the top right of the screen enables all the features of the app:

• Index search: displays in alphabetical order the headwords that match the characters typed in the search box
• Advanced search: lets you search for entries, and in full text
• Settings: allows you to choose the font size of the definitions and the language of the interface
• History: keeps a record of the searches performed
• Abbreviations: displays a table with an explanation of the abbreviations used within the definitions
• Feedback: use it to provide suggestions, and notify errors, missing entries or other comments
• Our apps: displays an updated and detailed catalog of our offer
• Privacy and Credits: view legal notices about the app

L'app non è disegnata in maniera fruibile e manca di funzioni essenziali come: atlante cronologico, apparato iconografico degno del nome di enciclopedia, interlink tra le voci (se non in pochi casi). Inoltre il database è strutturato in maniera così parziale che, esempio, la ricerca della parola "Uffizi" non da risultati mentre la voce appare soltanto al digitare "Galleria degli Uffizi". Un database concepito malissimo. A parte la scarsità di voci (mancano alcuni grandi autori, movimenti e tematiche artistiche quali "annunciazione" o "trasfigurazione), l'app ha l'impostazione più di un dizionario che di un'enciclopedia. Per la pochezza contenutistica credo sia imputabile la Zanichelli (il cui equivalente cartaceo non è il massimo), per l'app gli sviluppatori hanno utilizzato lo stesso framework dei loro dizionari. Non è così che funziona un'enciclopedia. Forse va bene per studenti delle scuole medie, ma non per un uso professionale e per professionisti.
