### 3/5 — OK, but not perfect

*2026-08-21, version 1.9.4*

The user interface is nice, and the spec is good. However it’s prone to logouts and disconnects.

Also spam is an issue. Support is patchy.

Potential if these issues can be fixed.

### 4/5 — Basic email - one minor annoyance

*2026-07-31, version 1.9.4*

It’s a basic email client. It does the job and doesn’t get in your way. Supports encryption if you have anyone to correspond with using encryption.

However, when composing reply emails the app always scrolls your text up so you can only see the current line you’re typing. This cannot be fixed with settings. It happens on every reply or forwarded email, and scrolling back manually only temporarily lets you read your previous lines typed until you start typing again.

### 2/5 — Something has changed

*2026-07-03, version 1.9.4*

No longer receiving email I previously received on a regular basis. And heaven help me if any site wants to send me an email confirmation link.

### 2/5 — Basic email - one major annoyance

*2026-04-28, version 1.9.3*

It’s a basic email client. Nothing special here. It does the job.

However, when composing an email the app always scrolls your text off the screen every time you type a letter. This cannot be fixed with settings. It happens on every email, and scrolling manually only temporarily lets you read what you’re typing until you start typing again.

I give two stars due to this significantly interfering with a core function of an email client.

### 2/5 — Issues

*2026-01-14, version 1.8.2*

The biggest issue all the time on phone app is “Unable to reach servers” etc. It never works most of the time.

### 4/5 — Left Hanging Again by Mailfence Support

*2025-12-09, version 1.8.2*

About 3 weeks ago, after a gradual failing of reliable IMAP connectivity over the prior couple of months between my web based email hub account and my Mailfence feed (both paid accounts), I contacted both companies, and after about a week of messaging with both, I learned that MF was blocking or restricting a range of IP addresses (those necessary to retrieve and sync my MF mail in my webmail hub account).

MF finally informed me that they were being cautious about opening the range of addresses, as a result of abuse, spamming, I guess, that they've apparently noted from the other company’s user accounts, but they did not say they would not be doing so.

So, that being indefinite, I asked MF if I could expect that to happen, and if so, when?

That was two weeks and three add'l follow-up messages from me ago, with each follow-up receiving an automated response confirming receipt of my message, and containing the notice that the expected response window time would be between a few minutes and three days, so almost 5x past that outside range now.

I think this is the most extreme time frame, but it's not the first time I've been left in limbo sending multiple follow-ups to MF support.

It's really odd, being a paid account. Unprofessional and discourteous, both, and I'd much rather have just been told at the outset that MF had blacklisted the other company (which they should then notify their customer base about or post to some part of their website), than to be left hanging. Understaffed, maybe, or maybe just indifferent to my circumstance, bigger fish to fry. 🤷‍♂️

This being a fundamental customer service issue, and now apparently routine, I thought it was time to share the info generally.

### 4/5 — Great app great service

*2025-11-06, version 1.8.1*

No complaints

### 3/5 — Now not working on iPhone

*2025-10-13, version 1.8*

iOS login now fails on 18.7.1. (Account not recognised error). Even with full Mailfence email as id and previously stored p/w. Has been OK if basic (free) last 12 months

### 4/5 — App doesn’t let me sign in

*2025-10-08, version 1.8*

UPDATE: Now it’s working again. I enjoy this app very much so I wasn’t too happy about the possibility of switching, but it’s all good now.

After I went through the trouble of making Mailfence my main email, it says “Sorry. Something unexpected happened.” whenever I attempt to login to the app. When I reached out for support I get “Sorry, but we don’t provide assistance to free users.” I’ve been able to login to my account via browser using the same credentials, but the app suddenly says my account doesn’t exist after I changed the password

### 1/5 — App doesn’t let me sign in

*2025-10-04*

After I made Mailfence my main email, it says “Sorry. Something unexpected happened.” whenever I attempt to login to the app. When I reached out for support I get “Sorry, but we don’t provide assistance to free users.” I’ve been able to login to my account via browser using the same credentials, but the app suddenly says my account doesn’t exist after I changed the password and logged in via browser. Make it make sense

### 4/5 — Login Issues After Update

*2025-10-04, version 1.8*

iOS version of app recently broke logging in after updating even though the website still functions perfectly fine. Keeps giving a "something unexpected happened" error and repeated attempts share the same result.

### 4/5 — Latest update broke login

*2025-10-03, version 1.8*

I cannot login on mobile since the last update. It tells me that the username and password are not correct or don’t exist. I can login to the desktop site no problem

### 4/5 — Can’t login to app

*2025-10-03, version 1.8*

Won’t let me login to the app but I can login to the website. Please fix as I don’t receive alerts.

### 1/5 — Cannot access!

*2025-10-03, version 1.8*

This app doesn't work properly, don't download it and avoid using it, it has many glitches, and I can't access to my account, only I can from safari web!!

### 4/5 — Problems with login

*2025-10-02*

I have enjoyed the app on Iphone but after a update its not recognizing the login and password. Yet on the web it does

**Developer response:** Hello,

Could you please try again by using your primary emailaddress as username / login?

Regards,

Mailfence Team

### 1/5 — Updates mess everything up

*2025-10-02, version 1.8*

Every update leaves me without access to my mail until I get home to find my login. I paid for this service, however their apps and browser access is poor. I will most likely not renew this service.

### 2/5 — What kind of fool…

*2025-09-23, version 1.7.0*

I tried to set-up an email address with your app, but you require that I already have an email address. However I try to understand that, I fail to give it any kind of sensible reason.

Why would I want an email address, if I already had one?
Because I wanted to dump the old address?
No. Because, then I can’t use it as a backup for your email app.

If I was stupid enough to have that email address with Gmail, Outlook, or other data-collecting trash, I’d be even more stupid if I didn’t dump it. You know that, as well as I do. So why would you even ask for it.

If you’re doing it to stop people using your service for burner emails (which I completely understand), put a 48 hour (or 1 week) block on using the newly created email. If you explain that in your app description, I’m sure people would understand. Especially if they already have an existing email address to use, temporarily. Fixed that problem for you!!

If you want an existing email address for marketing purposes, or for KYC, then your privacy talk is going to eventually backfire on you. Badly.

Maybe my local Rocket Scientist can help, but he’s kinda busy. Anybody else shed any light?

I can only give you 2 stars, because I never got to see the inside of your cozy little app. And I think 2 stars is pretty generous, considering you just wasted 20 minutes of my life. Plus another 10 minutes to write this review.

### 2/5 — Luv4beauties

*2025-09-12, version 1.7.0*

At first, I thought it was great and then my account got hacked. Not even a week after I started it to empty out an inbox and to throw trash away and get rid of trash itself it takes forever. Usually you have to hit it up 3 to 5 times for us to even work you need to have some kind of system where you can just check everything that you want to delete it. One time hit a button. It takes forever to get rid of anything. Other than that I could not get into even delete my account because I’ve been taken over. I couldn’t get to my account page even do anything so if somebody is still using my email address, it is not me because I couldn’t shut it down and I couldn’t get a hold of him ready to help me do it either because you don’t have any chat line any 800 number for anybody here is that help youso I logged out and that’s all I can do and if somebody tries to log back in all, I can tell you is that it’s not me asking for my password because I have left

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Wish I could use it, but I keep getting blocked on signup. Very frustrating.

*2026-08-24, version 1.9.4*

After attempting to register a new account via the app, I have been prevented from doing so by Mailfence. They list 4 potential reasons but don’t specify which one precisely caused the block. I see that other reviewers have encountered this same error, so I can only assume that Mailfence doesn’t care or is incapable of relaxing their criteria for signup. I’m sorry, but I won’t disable my VPN to sign up for a privacy-minded email service. That’s counter to the entire privacy ethos. I also won’t use a big tech personal email address as my recovery email. Again, it’s antithetical to the entire privacy ethos. I’m not in the wrong here; Mailfence is. And they need to fix it if they ever hope to win over converts from Proton and Tuta.

### 1/5 — Long-time customer, disappointed with the support, will not recommend anymore

*2026-08-21, version 1.9.4*

I’ve been using Mailfence since 2020 and became a paying customer over a year ago. I had generally been very happy with the service and had a good experience for many years, but well, not anymore👎

One day, my account was blocked. I contacted support by email to understand the situation and see whether anything could be done, I didn’t send multiple follow-ups or keep chasing them so I trusted that my request would be reviewed and waited patiently. As of writing this, I still haven’t received a response.

I do get that account restrictions can happen and that there may be valid reasons for blocking an account. What I find really disappointing is the lack of communication, especially after being a customer for more than six years.

Their stated typical support response time for paid customer is from a few minutes to up to three days, so I expected at least some kind of response or explanation. Unfortunately, none. And I’m still waiting.

After so many years as a customer, this was honestly a deal breaker for me. I’d been happy with Mailfence for years, but the way this situation was handled and the complete lack of response from support left made me realize I can no longer trust the service.

At this point, I’ll be looking at other options and recommending Proton Mail or Tuta to my friends and clients instead.

I genuinely liked Mailfence and had no plans to leave, but after six years as a customer, this is not how I expected to be treated. I can’t recommend the service anymore👋

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2026-06-20, version 1.9.4*

I setup this email account with a plan to migrate all of my emails across but found 2 issues- 1) I get notified on iPhone that I have received a message and check account on iPhone and n new emails arrived. Eventually after many of these false notifications I checked on desktop and could see emails.
2). Since the email notifications were unreliable I was hesitant to move my accounts over, and while I made sure I sent an occasional email, I continued to get notified my account was being deactivated.
I am looking forward to my account with Maltese being deactivated.

### 1/5 — Strong privacy claims — but signup blocks privacy-minded users (must fix)

*2026-05-31, version 1.9.4*

I chose this app specifically because of its stated commitment to privacy and encryption, but my experience creating a new account undermines that promise. During signup the service rejected my registration with a vague error claiming “potential abuse,” and listed several possible causes: country/IP flagged, disposable recovery email, or my browser being outdated. None of those applied — I was using a mainstream iPhone browser, a legitimate recovery address on a privacy-focused provider, and a consistent IP (I temporarily used Cloudflare WARP for privacy). The registration failed because the username was one character too long, which is minor, but the final rejection screen explicitly blocks signups when it detects privacy tooling, disposable emails, or networks with good security practices. That is the opposite of what a privacy-first service should do.

Why this matters:

Privacy-first users intentionally use VPNs, secure DNS, anti-tracking tools, and privacy-focused recovery addresses. Penalizing these behaviors excludes the very people the app claims to protect.
Forced use of non-private recovery channels or blocking secure browsers increases fingerprintability and metadata exposure, undermining the advertised protections.
The error messaging is unhelpful and non-actionable. It lists multiple possible causes without indicating which one actually triggered the block, leaving users guessing and unable to resolve the issue without trial-and-error or contacting support.
Concrete suggestions:

Make the rejection reason specific — tell the user which trigger caused the block (IP reputation, disposable email, browser fingerprint, etc.) and provide clear next steps.
Allow account creation from common privacy setups (VPNs, WARP, secure browsers) or provide a documented, privacy-respecting verification path for those users.
Stop requiring a non-privacy recovery option as the only way to proceed; allow a secondary account on privacy providers or verified phone alternatives that don’t force broader linkage.
Publish a short support page explaining why signups are blocked and how privacy-minded users can legitimately complete registration without weakening their privacy posture.
Add a grace period and human review for plausible false positives so legitimate users aren’t permanently locked out.
My expectation from a privacy-focused app is that they design onboarding to accommodate — not punish — privacy and security choices. Please fix the signup flow, clarify error messages, and provide an alternate verification path that doesn’t require users to choose between account access and their privacy tools.

### 1/5 — Not up to par anymore

*2026-02-20, version 1.9.0*

I’ve had Mailfence for a number of years now with no problems but lately the app refuses to connect at all and it’s been really buggy sounds like maybe some ip’s are being blocked this is 😔

### 1/5 — Do not pay for a plan

*2026-01-30, version 1.8.2*

One would think if you pay for a plan. Wondered why I could not try by month first. Well, because they take your money and will not even respond to one question/issue in a year!? F is the grade. Going back to Zoho and Proton.

### 1/5 — Does not work!!!

*2026-01-27, version 1.8.2*

Horrible! The things I’ve reported spam multiple times keep coming to my inbox and the things I reported not spam multiple times keep going to spam!!! What’s not clicking??? Some emails don’t get delivered and don’t get sent at all!! I’ve missed multiple extremely important emails because of you!!! What kind of absolute TRASH is this!?!?

### 1/5 — Can’t even sign up due to opaque and unnecessarily prohibitive rules.

*2025-12-23*

I’ve been blocked from signing up multiple times and I’ve completely given up because of it. The app displays a list of several potential reasons why you’re prevented from signing up, including using a VPN or a recovery email address that appears to be an alias/disposable. They don’t inform you of exactly which issue is preventing you from signing up. It’s quite frustrating. Imagine a secure/private email service that prevents users from signing up if they use a VPN! Of course we use a VPN. And of course we will refuse to disable it for your service. I realize you need to prevent abuse, but find another way. My VPN is staying connected and I’m not handing over my personal email address to you either.

**Developer response:** Hi, We’re really sorry for the frustration this caused and understand how disappointing this experience can be. This is not the experience we want for our users. We’d like to help investigate what happened with your account creation. Please contact our support team at support@mailfence.com so we can look into this and assist you directly. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Mailfence Team

### 1/5 — Some issues

*2025-11-16, version 1.8.1*

UPDATE: The recent update gave the iPad app a very strange glitch that hasn’t been addressed. When composing an email, the page automatically scrolls back up while typing out the text, so you can’t see what you’re writing. No matter where the curser is on the page, the page scrolls up. If you scroll down to where you are typing and begin typing your text, it pops back up to the top of the page. I’ve sent in a troubleshooting ticket but it hasn’t been fixed yet. If using this on your mobile app, it’s the same but can be fine to deal with it you compose a short message. If however, you, write a longer email, then the page will again, scroll back up to the top and you can’t see what you’re writing. No issues on desktop. Please fix this. This is annoying and makes the app unusable.

### 1/5 — App doesn’t let me sign in

*2025-10-06*

After I went through the trouble of making Mailfence my main email, it says “Sorry. Something unexpected happened.” whenever I attempt to login to the app. When I reached out for support I get “Sorry, but we don’t provide assistance to free users.” I’ve been able to login to my account via browser using the same credentials, but the app suddenly says my account doesn’t exist after I changed the password

**Developer response:** Hello, Could you please try again by using your primary emailaddress as username / login? Regards, Mailfence Team

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Absolutely great 👏

*2026-05-09, version 1.9.3*

The greatest and most serious email platform ever !

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2025-12-10, version 1.8.2*

Best email provider I've ever used. It was easy to sign up, didn't need a phone number which was amazing. And it is also easy to find everything. The one minor problem is that a lot of my emails go to my spam folder, not sure how to turn that off but it's a near perfect app. 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

### 5/5 — Postman Rings Twice

*2025-09-02, version 1.7.0*

Except… Why Knott make the desktop app. Look like other Email apps? Reading Panes, Account, and Local Folders. I.e. Mailfence.com website… P.S. How do you add a second Email Account?

### 5/5 — wonderful app

*2025-08-28, version 1.7.0*

very good！👏

### 5/5 — Perfect

*2025-08-24*

This app is minimal with no flashy garbage to distract. It’s sleek and professional. I hope it always stays this way. I will use for a few months then move my business email domains to this fantastic service.

**Developer response:** Thanks a lot for your feedback and rating! Very much appreciated. If you have any suggestions, please send them to support@mailfence.com. Your feedback is highly valuable for us. Mailfence Team

### 5/5 — Great email service!

*2025-06-24, version 1.7.0*

I love having a secure, European email account. American companies will give you free accounts but then pilfer through your data. I enjoy paying monthly for Mailfence so I know that my data is secure.

### 5/5 — 1 gripe & 1 request

*2025-05-11, version 1.5.1*

Gripe: dark mode could be better. Sometimes renders email unreadable because font won't change color.

Request : icons for senders.

I understand if either of those couldn't be implemented because of privacy conserns other than that, great app.

### 5/5 — A Simple, Secure, and Reliable Email App!

*2025-02-14*

I absolutely love Mailfence! The interface is clean, simple, and easy to navigate. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to other email apps. It’s secure, reliable, and perfect for anyone looking for an intuitive and private email experience. Highly recommend it!

**Developer response:** Thanks a lot for your feedback. Have a lovely day. Best regards. Mailfence Team

### 5/5 — Can’t login

*2025-01-31, version 1.5.1*

I need help. I can’t login because I don’t have the email I signed up with and I have a lot of bets on it. I need to change the email

### 5/5 — Love the service, still waiting for the calendar.

*2024-11-29, version 1.5.0*

I use my custom email domain with these folks.
