Great idea, terrible execution

I’m an English teacher, so this immediately struck me as a great tool for an American high school classroom with iPads equipped.

At first, things looked good, but then I noted that there are typographical errors in almost all of the answer choices, rendering this unusable as a real study aid. Additionally, the developer appears to have used some sort of automation or text generator to create the responses if not the text; or the team may not be native English speakers. In any event, there are some “correct” answers which are plainly written in a stilted, awkward style that would make me mark the response incorrect because of their imprecision. Next, there are some etymological questions that aren’t borne out in the readings, which results in users reading a text and then encountering a word with virtually no context clues and being asked to answer questions about the word origin. Towards the end of these selections, the prompt directs users to other sources (dictionary.com, Wikipedia.com, etc) to consult the source and find the answer. Finally, there are certain “tells” which give the correct answers aware in many questions. For instance, the distractors will be one or two words, while the correct answer is almost a complete sentence. It sticks out like a sore thumb and draws attention to its notable keywords and singling itself out as the only robust answer.

To me, these are problems that make the app in its current form unusable as real learning tool. It’s a good start, but it needs massive corrections. I’ve already gone through “packages” 1-3 in the reading comprehension, and some questions I’ve simply had to rewrite from the ground up before sharing with my students.

If the developer were able to correct these issues, this would be a strong app which I could recommend to anyone striving to drill his reading comprehension. As it stands now, I can’t rate this well.
