Im not able to just let it play continuously because it so often goes dark/creepy. I cant use it for background at a party, or in mixed company, in a car because of this. Da ich mich aber viel konzentrieren muss, stört Musik mit Gesang. Ich hab viel rum probiert und eine ganze Menge interessante Musik gefunden, mit der das funktioniert. Leider ist auch die längste Playlist irgendwann zu Ende, und man hört doch immer wieder fast das gleiche. Auch in der unheimlichen Menge eines Musikabos findet man nicht unbegrenzt. Seit ich die App habe, läuft sie fast pausenlos während der Arbeit. Only a genius like Jarre could come up with something like that. ### 5/5 — Mindblowingly great! *2024-03-28, version 1.8* I've been a fan of JMJ's music since a friend introduced me to Oxygene back in the 1980s, so I was intrigued when I saw this pop up in the app store. I hit the buy button, thinking it would be a bit like one of the Brian Eno generative music apps, and it kind of is, but also isn't! I was initially a bit disappointed to find that there's no ability to interact with the music in EōN, by which I mean you can't edit any parameters or set any seed conditions with which to shape the sound. All you can do is hit a refresh button to create a new song. However, the music this thing generates is ASTONISHING. The variety of sounds and different styles of music it creates is jaw-dropping. Like, you'll be sitting there thinking "how the HECK are they DOING that?". I was wondering whether any cloud-bssed AI was involved, but no, the app works perfectly in airplane mode, so it's all being done offline. From punchy dance tracks to drifty ambient, to almost experimental pieces (I swear I had one in 5/4 time signature the other day!), it's all there. I fired this up yesterday and got a beautiful song based around a single female vocal sample, or what sounded very much like it...a single syllable that drifted around the stereo field and reshaped itself dynamically. Oh and on that note, if you'll excuse the pun, this app makes GREAT use of dynamic stereo - sounds will drift from left to right and back again in a way that really elevates the music in a way that I've never encountered in any of the many generative music apps I've got, including the Eno ones. It would be remiss of me not to mention the visuals too. They're stunning. Almost fractal in nature, they pulse and shift with what appears to be a flocking algorithm, and constantly change in colour and shape - and they're dramatically different depending on the song (I haven't yet worked out whether the visuals are random or are connected with the type of music that's being generated; I suspect the latter is true). There's no save button, which is frustrating when you get a really good song, but having watched the interview that JMJ gave at the tech conference where he launched Eōn, I understand that this was by design...he specifically chose not to have a save function, because he wanted the music that Eōn creates to be ephemeral, which fits with the overall ethos of the app which is that it creates a unique song every time you launch it. I totally get this - creating a fleeting piece of magic that leaves no trace other than in our memories is a great concept, and it reminds me of the landscape art of the great Andy Goldsworthy in that sense. Each "song" seems to last 3-6 minutes before it morphs into something else, and there are identifiable breaks between them. As other reviewers have said, it would be great to see a timer feature so that you could set this to play for a chosen number of minutes before gently fading out. I'd love to fall asleep to this! This is an absolute must-have app. JMJ and the developers have done a truly remarkable job and they can give themselves a hearty pat on the back! ### 5/5 — Fresh every time *2024-03-18, version 1.8* Like listening to a new Jarre album every time. It is still dominated by drum machines and ridiculous sound effects - such as a purring cat! Sorry, but this is a huge disappointment - so much so that I rarely use it now. Update: It has been three weeks since I first put up this review. I have tried sticking with it but those drum machines take way too much time on the app. Please scale those down and get more Jarre-esque atmospheric samples into the next version of the app. I have loved JMJ’s music ever since Oxygene was first released. I have big hopes that this app will get better. ————————————————- This is a good app - nice visuals - clever concept with the occasional nice soundscapes but .... This rarely sounds like JMJ’s music but more like a generic plug-in sound bank. The drum machine seems to feature more than anything else and is nothing short of tedious. If you want to listen to a drum machine then go buy a Moog DFAM and fill ya boots.
