## What is Essential 8 Knowledge Base?

Essential 8 Knowledge Base is an offline quick-reference app for administrators and cyber security teams implementing the ASD Essential Eight in Windows-based environments.

Designed for practical use beside a console, the app helps you quickly review each Essential Eight mitigation, understand maturity-level expectations, and access implementation-focused guidance without needing an account, internet connection, or external service.

Features include:

Coverage of all eight ASD Essential Eight mitigation strategies
ML0, ML1, ML2 and ML3 reference content for each control
Windows-focused implementation notes using built-in administration tooling
Practical references for Group Policy, registry settings, PowerShell, Windows Defender, AppLocker, WDAC, Windows Update for Business, backups and related controls
Optional Microsoft 365 additional controls view for E3, Entra ID P1/P2 and E5 environments
Copy-friendly technical blocks for paths, commands and configuration values
Built-in About, Privacy and reference links
Fully offline operation
No analytics, tracking, account sign-in or user data collection
The app is intended as a technical reference for enterprise administrators, cyber security engineers and IT operations teams working through Essential Eight uplift activities.

Content should always be validated against the current ASD Essential Eight Maturity Model and relevant Microsoft documentation before implementation in production environments.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.8 — 2026-08-03

What's New in Version 1.8: MITRE ATT&CK® Enterprise v19.1 Mappings & Coverage
In this major release, Essential 8 Knowledge Base bridges ASD Essential Eight implementation with adversary tradecraft:
• MITRE ATT&CK® v19.1 Mappings: Curated per-step technique mappings across 65 implementation steps, categorized by Prevent, Detect, Recover, and Support relationships.
• Profile & Scope-Aware Coverage: View real-time ATT&CK coverage calculated dynamically against your active assessment profile, target maturity level (ML1–ML3), and OS scope (Workstation/Server).
• Interactive Technique Detail: Tap technique capsules on maturity pages to inspect mapped steps, relationship context, implementation status, and analyst caveats.
• Tactic Groupings & Rollups: Analyze coverage breakdowns across ATT&CK tactics with honest Covered, Partial, Not Covered, Indirect, and N/A states.
• Global ATT&CK Search: Search instantly by technique ID (e.g. T1059), parent ID, technique name, or analyst mapping notes.
• 100% Offline & Private: No analytics, no accounts, no network calls. All reference data remains completely offline on your device.

### 1.7 — 2026-07-25

Version 1.7 introduces multi-environment management and per-step audit trail capabilities to streamline ASD Essential Eight assessments across diverse infrastructure.
What’s New in v1.7:
• Multiple Assessment Profiles
Create, switch, rename, and delete independent profiles for different environments, clients, or domains. Each profile maintains its own progress tracking, target maturity level, OS scope filtering, and audit history.
• Deep Audit Mode & Status History
Record timestamped history every time a mitigation step changes status. Capture optional audit notes or N/A justification reasons at change time, and inspect complete change logs via a dedicated per-step history view.
• Profile-Aware Backup & Restore (Schema v2)
Export individual profiles or your complete multi-profile workspace to offline JSON. Features non-destructive "Import as New Profile" to easily aggregate client assessments, alongside full-device restore and v1.6 backup compatibility.
• Security & Reliability Enhancements
Includes audit trail entry capping, safety guards on file imports, updated onboarding splash guides, and underlying performance improvements.
Thank you for using Essential 8 Knowledge Base! If you find the app helpful, please leave us a rating or review on the App Store.

### 1.6 — 2026-07-14

What’s New in Version 1.6
• Filter implementation guidance by Workstation, Server or Both, with compliance recalculated for your selected environment.
• Back up and transfer your progress, N/A reasons and app settings using offline JSON export and restore.
• View the installed app version and build number directly in About.

### 1.5 — 2026-07-06

This release corrects several technical details across the Essential Eight guidance for greater accuracy:

• Corrected AppLocker deny-path syntax for user-writable locations
• Added a caveat for the AppIDSvc service command on Windows 10 1809 and later
• Replaced an incorrect Microsoft Edge policy in the Java-blocking step
• Clarified that Edge Tracking Prevention alone does not meet ad-blocking requirements
• Limited the Office macro block policy to the apps it actually supports
• Added a security caution to the backup scheduling command

No new features — just more accurate reference content.

### 1.4 — 2026-07-06

Version 1.4 adds target maturity tracking and verified ISM mapping support.
Set an organisation-wide Target Maturity Level of ML1, ML2 or ML3.
Dashboard compliance, maturity charts, control progress and completion badges now measure against your selected target.
Maturity levels above your target remain available as reference content and are marked “Beyond target”.
Implementation steps now show verified ISM control identifiers where mapped from ASD’s Essential Eight maturity model and ISM mapping.
Global Search now supports ISM IDs, including full identifiers such as ISM-1490 and numeric searches such as 1490.
Updated startup splash screen and added additional automated test coverage for the new maturity target and ISM search behaviour.
